iMovie Transitions Missing

I had this problem with iMovie on my old MacBook Pro, (2013) and my new one (2020). In iMovie on my old Mac all of the transition options, except for the ones with the trees, disappeared. I downloaded iMovie for my new MacBook Pro, and they're all missing from there too, except for the one's with the trees. On my old computer I have a file in iMovie that I never added anything too, and when I open it up all of the transitions are in it. Every single old file, or new ones that I make have not option for the standard transitions. Can anyone help? Thanks!

MacBook, OS X 10.11

Actually, all of the transitions have trees displayed in the transition's icon. There are 24 transitions. Move your cursor over the icons and you will see them displayed in the preview screen.

The update might have triggered this issue. You could use your Time Machine backup to revert back to your previous version of iMovie, and see if that solves it.

Here are some diagnostic procedures that you can try:

Updating

iMovie

To update/redownload iMovie 10, drag your

iMovie 10 app from the Applications folder into the trash, but do not empty the

trash. Sign in to the app store and open your purchases folder by

clicking on your name at the bottom of the app store side bar. You will see your purchases

displayed, including iMovie 10. Redownload/update iMovie from there. If not

successful, drag your present iMovie app out of the trash and return it to the Applications folder.

Deleting

Preferences

Try opening iMovie while holding down the

Option and Command keys and selecting to delete preferences in the box that

appears. iMovie will open in a new library. Reopen your old library to get back

to your projects.

New

Project

Another thing you can try is to copy your

media into a newly created project and see if that cures the problem. To do

that, do an Edit/Select All, Edit/Copy, of the media in your project and then

Edit/Paste it into the newly created project.

Safe

Mode

You could also try booting up in Safe

Mode (see Finder menu for instructions) and, after everything loads,

immediately shut down and reboot in normal mode. Then see if iMovie works

properly.

Resetting

the System Management Controller

Try resetting the System Management

Yes, I went to the App Store and from the menu on the left clicked Updates. From there it showed that iMovie had been automatically updated. At the top right of the iMovie app it gave me the option to "Open". Once I opened iMovies from there, all my transitions came back. Odd, but this has happened before with other apps. It seems that after there has been an update, I need to the app first the App Store.

I just updated to IMOVIE 10.15.1 on 8/26/21. I am working on a project that was started previous to the update and noticed the transitions are all showing a red background with s squiggly white arrow line and an exclamation point. So I figured the various transitions I used (my theme was NONE, by the way as I was building my own) needed to be replaced or updated. So, after I deleted all of the transitions from my movie project, I went to the TRANSITIONS menu choice and surprise, SURPRISE....... there were absolutely NO TRANSITIONS available to choose or use? The entire page was black. What do I need to do to get my transitions capability back?

This same thing happened to me. There are absolutely know transitions to choose from now. I tried new libraries, and this does not work. I even tried saving the libraries to an external to open on another computer, but I can't open the library on another computer because I need the new update, which I am trying to avoid, since it doesn't have transistions. Very upsetting.

I don't quite understand what you are saying. Are you going to the App store and updating from there? Can you describe the steps, and what you mean by "go into APPs"?

It will be interesting to see if your solution works for others with this problem. What has been happening with these glitches is that solutions that work for one person don't work for another.

Thanks for posting with your results.
