iMac 27 inch 2020 - Screen Glitch (Random Lines Appear on Screen)

I've just received my new iMac and noticed that from time to time a line glitch appears on my screen.

It's completely random, I thought it was related to intensive work/heat but sometimes even when the computer is idle I see the line on the screen.

It was really hard to capture it because it's so random, but I manage to record the moment a glitch happens. Unfortunately there's a lot of white background on it which makes it hard to see, but it goes across the entire screen https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xw8Z4mVgYgE

The iMac is running fine, I ran all sorts of benchmarks for CPU/GPU and it's all OK, but from time to time I see this annoying line on my screen.

Try the following: download and apply the macOS Catalina 10.15.7 Combo Update

It fixes this issue:

• Addresses a graphic issue that may occur on iMac (Retina 5K, 27-inch, 2020) with Radeon Pro 5700 XT

I think that every mac with this configuration suffers the glitch. It is just a matter of time before one sees it or pays attention to it. Assemblyline is for every device the same, software or hardware, so logically it should be in every. Or else there would be a computerpart , from which the produced serie contains faulty ones now and then. But this is hard to trace in this case.

@haplodepatrijn I believe you're right. I have proof that it happens on my iMac (the video on the OP), but for example yesterday, I went thru the entire day without noticing it.

Since it's so fast and random and the monitor is so big, it's pretty easy to miss a flashing line ~1px tall from time to time, specially when you're looking at white/bright content.

When I was diagnosing this (and trying to get it on camera) my wife was also looking at my monitor and she didn't notice when it happened (or vice-versa).

I'm having the same exact issue with the horizontal white line flickering on the screen from time to time. I called Apple Support and reported the issue but of course, it was kind of useless. I seriously don't know what to do... return the machine and get another one or wait for a software patch, I mean... this is a real issue!

I've decided to return my unit. It's a to expensive buy to count on it being a software issue. Return of sale rules are of course different from country to country. 14 days after an online purchase in my country and I can no longer return the unit for anything else than a repair or replacement which won't do me any good if it's a general hardware failure. Better wait this one out.

I'm in contact with Apple Germany to provide them with more details, screenshots and video / screen recordings. However this stupid white line glitch didn't appear for an entire session right now. I bet once I don't capture the screen it appears within seconds next time I restart :D Hard to replicate this issue :O or do anyone knows of a safe way to provoke the iMac to do this?

I don't know if my other problem with the same iMac is only for me and a few others in this thread, but playing a video game like Civilization VI for 10-15 min. in full screen is a sure way to make my iMac crash entirely with dramatic graphical glitches - only a hard reboot can save it each time. It happens every single time after max. 15 min. of gameplay so if you got yourself a game from Steam or so give it a try.

Same issue here, I already sold my previous iMac. If I return this one which I use for professional purposes, I won't have something to work with. I'm really disappointed even though the unit is a beast of a machine. I edit a lot of 4K video and it's an absolutely pleasure to use in FCPX, but these graphic glitches are annoying. I also noticed the windows rounding issue as well earlier today.

@airpoint, the second display thing seems to be very true, your message just made me realize that.

For the past couple days I wasn't noticing the line anymore, I thought it either stopped happening or I wasn't noticing anymore, but I had an external display on.

Today I removed my external display because I was cleaning my desk and didn't plug it in back and noticed it multiple times during the day (at least 5-10 times using for ~10h).

I have this issue too - I've had the iMac for 13 days and need to make a return decision ASAP. I have spoken to Apple support, been through the usual SMC, NVRAM rests etc. but the random line is still appearing once or 2 or 3 times an hour. I can't provoke it with a stress test or anything else.

Hoping it is a driver/software issue. Very disappointing for a very expensive machine.

I was literally going to hit the buy button on this machine today... not now until this is addressed or fixed.

I am not spending thousands of dollars and a ton of time doing anything if it is a hardware issue.

According to macrumors forum most think its a software issue which is good.

But we need an answer or at least something from Apple saying its being worked on

Sep 2, 2020 7:56 PM in response to Mike Abrams

I completely agree! I'm surprised by the silence from Apple. They need to release a statement to let us know that the issue is under investigation... as there are many customers who are holding off buying the top of the line iMac 2020 until the issue has been acknowledged by Apple.

I cancelled my iMac 2020 5700XT order just in time before it shipped, and I won't re-order until this issue has been identified and fixed.

i really can not believe that Apple was unaware of this glitch. In my opinion , they were on a tight deathline with the outroll of their arm Macs on the way and that they absolutely wanted to launch the last intel Mac before that. Maybe they gambled that Mac buyers are that loyal to the marque that they would swallow the glitch. This is the first time I know that there is such a reaction of users and potential buyers on an error of the company. Are we finally become grown-up ?

There’s a lot of happy customers of the 5700 model, and I can perfectly understand and respect their decision to buy it. I was also really tempted to order the 5700 model instead of the problematic 5700XT, but for me... I concluded why should I give Apple my money in exchange for a less powerful graphics card than the one I really want, while they continue to ignore their customers with the 5700XT issue.
