Apple News app won’t load additional articles

Apple News isn’t loading new articles to read. Instead it will continue to spin and spin and never update. I’m running 13.6.1 on my 12.9” Pro Gen 3 iPad, News App is updated, I subscribe to News+, and it happens on any source of WiFi that it is connected up to.


For instance, I can completely close out the app, relaunch the app, and it will show the most current articles that show up under the “Today” heading. I can scroll down through about 5 rows of articles and then it hits the end. At that point the rotating wheel is just spinning (indefinitely) without ever updating with new articles. If I scroll back up to the top and then pull down to refresh, it will also display the spinning wheel and then just spin indefinitely. I can’t find any way to finish the refresh so that I can read more than the first 9 or 10 displayed articles.


For troubleshooting, I’ve taken the following steps in order of increased frustration:

  • I have closed/reopened the app.
  • I have turned off/on the iPad.
  • I’ve done a full force reboot of the iPad.
  • I’ve verified both my iOS and the app itself are up to date.
  • I’ve uninstalled the app and reinstalled it. I did this both ways - holding the app until you can X it out and also removing/reinstalling it from Settings/General/iPad Storage.
  • I’ve reset my network settings.
  • I’ve connected to my 2.4 and my 5 WiFi, connected via my iPhone hotspot on LTE, and at work on their WiFi.
  • I’ve removed all the custom viewed Channels & Topics.
  • I’ve reinstalled all the custom viewed Channels & Topics.


That’s where I am now. Any ideas? It’s so frustrating but don’t know where to go from here. Thanks!

You've done an excellent job troubleshooting this issue on your own. It appears you've covered just about everything except reinstalling your iOS software. At this point, you should go ahead and restore your iPhone to factory settings to resolve any software conflicts on the iPhone: Restore your iPhone, iPad, or iPod to factory settings 

Test the News app prior to restoring your backup. If the issue persists while the iPhone is restored without the backup, Contact Apple for support and service - Apple Support
