recovering data from an erased disk

I thought I was clearing out a backup disk but instead I wiped the actual disk. Aargh! Used Disk Utility app.

Is there any way I can recover my data?

Hi BobTheFisherman

Fortunately for me I since discovered that the app I was using with the vital erased stuff has an inbuilt backup and I was able to recover my data from there. For the rest of the disk contents I had other copies of a very large folder but I cannot remember if I had updated the erased copy; the rest has gone, alas.

I am surprised that there is no way to recover the data. How do investigators recover data to be used in proceedings against criminals, for instance?
