Clean My Mac X " can't be opened. What happened?

While working on a simple file, I noticed that my iMac was overworking to the point that I could hear it pushing out air. I had heard that Google Chrome was infiltrating operating systems so that is what I thought was happening. I removed Chrome as my main browser and transferred all to Safari. When I turned on m Ma today, I got the message that the application CleanMY Mac had a virus and could not be opened. I ran my Antivirus software AVG and it did not find any issues. I rebooted but the problem has persisted. I need my Clean My Mac to work.

Is something else going on? I checked preferences and the application is checked where I looked. I think there was a system upgrade recently, could this be the reason?

If you didn't have Clean My Mac, your computer would undoubtedly have far fewer problems than it does now.

CMM is complete garbage. Most experienced member here consider it malware.

Uninstall it completely.

Until you do so, any troubleshooting is completely pointless.

Once you have it removed, download etrecheck from the Mac App Store. It's free, and was written by one of the senior members here. It can generate a report of your system configuration that will give us a great deal of insight into what might be causing the problems you're having.

The helpful advice indicating the Virus Chest of Avast as requesting elements of CMM is appreciated. Some of us who are using our Macs to access government computers via VPN are required to use Avast or similar antivirals, regardless of our personal feelings. When Avast does something that we did not suspect, the advice given on this page is very much appreciated.

There are no personal fellings involved. It is a fact that third party apps like AVAST and CMM may cause problems. There are no Mac virus' out in the wild so using AVAST is totally unnecessary, resource consuming, and problem causing.

If your organization requires installing such app then the organization needs to be looking for new up to date support contractors or staff. Even Windows users no longer install third party anti virus apps like AVAST. Current MacOS and Windows have built-in security protection that is interferred with by third party apps like AVAST.

It is a wonder your computers run. CleanMyMac, AVAST, and Norton..

Just a suggestion, not a personal attack so don't get offended, maybe read some of the thousands of posts in these forums that mention those 3 apps.

Well, the problem is that it is a disservice to anyone coming to these forums for help to pass out such blatant misinformation.

FYI, if you are running Catalina, the OS and system files are now "quarantined" in their own inaccessible volume (read only), so any malware/virus has no access to it. Neither would an app looking for such. So, there is no point in installing these nonsensical apps; at best, they simply use resources unnecessarily - at worst, they will mess up your system.
