I have tried the things in this thread: Safari crashes immediately on mac - Apple Community

although the Saved Application State folder was empty.

1 - Suggest restarting in Safe Mode. This will perform a Disk Repair, clear cache files and only load Apple Software, extensions and fonts. The boot up will be slow and can take some time - Normal.

2 - Sometimes a Safe Boot followed by a Normal Boot will just put things right.

3 - Does the issue present in this mode ?

4 - If not - there could be something in the main User Account playing up. To further isolate this - Set up users, guests, and groups on Mac. Then log out of the Main User account and log into the dummy account and test again if the issue persists.

5 - If the issue is present in the dummy account - then, this appears to be a System Wide issue on the computer.

6 - If after performing each of the above steps is the order that have been presents  and still have issues - please advise for possible further assistance.

7- Suggest downloading the Application Etrecheck directly from a well Respected ASC Contributor. And Safe to use.

The application is free or paid from added features.

Run the application with Full Disc Access ( Security & Privacy - Full Disc Access ).

It will take a Snap Shot -  both the hardware and software.

Major Issues:

Q - Time Machine backup out-of-date - The last Time Machine backup is over 10 days old.

A - Worth keeping it up-to-date more frequently.

Q - Malware - Malware detected.

Unsigned files - There are unsigned software files installed that could be malicious and should be reviewed.

A - The The Built in Security  is all that is required to protect the computer.

Should “ Certain & Specific Software “ referenced from above be installed - it will negatively impact macOS. It is suggested, to download directly from a respected ASC Contributor, the application Malwarebytes for Mac

It is free or paid for added features.

Run the Application and it should remove the malware / adware. Once done, restart computer and test.

Thank you P.Phillips. I previously started in safe mode and it crashed within safe mode and again after I went back into the normal mode.

I have now created a test account and within it Safari opens. It asked if I wanted to load an extention I use, I did that and it still opens in the test account. I have come back to my account and it still won't open.

Anything further to try?

Thank you. That Samsung drive is less than a year old as the Fusion drive failed. It was fitted by a local computer shop who specialise in Apple.

I have not downloaded any security software. That uTorrent is not used on this one so I will delete it.

Malware bytes found Adware.Spigot which has been quarantined.

I am going to restart now but I didn't want to loose what I was typing.

This may work on a temporary basis.

But, " I previously started in safe mode and it crashed within safe mode " . Understand, Safe Mode Eliminates all Third Party Software, extension and Application from loading when the computer is first started.

Generally, if the problem occurs in Safe Mode it can be somethings be in the User Account as it can also indicate a Hardware Issue.

That aspect has been covered.
