Text in Contacts Notes field is lost after typing (MacOS Mojave 10.14.6)

Text typed into the Notes field of a Contacts card disappears when I click away—as in gone, not just "can't see it in the window." I'm not syncing with anything (iCloud is off, no gmail sync), and I've tried the "fixes" that others have posted (e.g. removing login items). This has started just since the Mojave upgrade from High Sierra (yesterday).

Safe Boot, (holding Shift key down at startup), does the problem occur in Safe Mode?

Safe mode attempts to repair Disks & clears lots of caches & loads safe Drivers, & prevents loading of 3rd party extensions, so if Safe Mode works try again in regular boot.

Whew, they've changed pastebin & made it harder, but after pasting in, click Create new paste button, then Embed button, then copy the URL...

Workable but harder for me to work with...the Note tool on the bottom of this editor's toolbar, as shown in the image, to copy and paste the output from EtreCheck. In a Reply before you click post, look for this to add longer texts...

In the new account I can create a few new cards and the notes I type into them do not disappear and are not truncated at the last edit. But that's an initially blank address book. In my real account I created a backup of my contacts database (.abbu), moved it to the Public folder of the new account, and in the new account tried to import it into Contacts, but this failed—Contacts removed all of the entries in the address book (the test entries I'd just created, of which there were just a few), but did not replace them with the data in the .abbu file (about 25MB, with roughly 3,500 contacts). I tried moving the .abbu file to the desktop of the new account (in case there was a privileges issue), but Contacts would not import it from there either. So I haven't been able to try the new account with a meaningful address book.
