I agree that SOMEONE FROM AOL should confirm. SURELY these people "watch over comments and contents" we submit EVERYWHERE! IT WOULD BE GREAT IF IN PLAIN ENGLISH THEY explained the procedure in simple non tech words AND add in parenthesis some examples of what they are talking about! I thank you for your input on this as I am still contemplating finding a different e mail service (SECRURE etc) to bring into APPLE MAIL window BTW YA'LL I AM UP TODATE OF COURSE PLUS I am ON c-a-t-a-l-i-n-a not Sierra nor Hi Sierra - PLEASE keep that in mind when responding. AND BTW I DID CALL A O L AND GOT A LADY IN ROMANIA her charge for "help" was $15 a month CS any time -sure - FUNNY some folks have indicated $9.99 to sky's the limit that I have "spoken" with - friends who have 20-30 years ago started with AOL w fees (now still using no charge) and DO NOT SEEM CONCERNED OVER THIS INEXPLICABLE GOOBE DE GOOP FROM A O L's "missives"!

Yes, it would be great if someone from AOL and or Apple would jump in here for us NOVICES AND OLD FOLKS on worry or don't worry and what to preform AND what to ignore. Isn't APPLE MAIL APP considered a third party by the power that beeeessss at aol?

? Not sure how what this has to do with the AOL missive about CHANGING SETTINGS IN ORDER TO CONTINUE W/ AOL come October 20, 2020 using what AOL considers thri party mail app MEANING "apple mail" - Please note ya'll I AM RUNNING up to date ......CATALINA / 10.15.6 .... not "high sierra"-

IN SUMMARY: has anyone figured out what AOL wants in SIMPLE LANGUAGE to to be that MUST BE DONE in order to continue using AOL WITHIN the apple mail (NOT iCloud) simple apple mail with AOL email addresses (plural) ADDRESSES. Thanks a bunch for input.

Continue using third-party mail apps securely

Use an app password

If you use AOL two-step verification or an older email app, you may need to use an app specific password to access AOL Mail. Just remember, app passwords are only valid for the app they are created for and remain valid until you sign out or remove access to the app. At that time, a new password will need to be created.

Thank you for simplifying - HOWEVER, as a non techie person... I am not sure if I have 2 step- I DO know if I change a p.w. AOL will send me an email. HERE'S THE KICKER... I am still confused... I have two AOL accounts- if I go to "the back door" / website I have to log in...AND to get to my second account used for "pains in my butt emails" I have to LOG OUT of that account and LOG IN to the other account order to read ... that MUST be considered log out, am I correct? I rarely go to web mail site, I use the convenience of having brought BOTH AOL email address ACCOUNTS into APPLE e mail window - both appear there easy peasy to read. Can you help to un-confuse me on this part of what DOES APPEAR TO BE a lot easier... than saving on server (another I dunno issue) As I can't find where to check or uncheck save on server ... than removing and putting back all the emails back into my APPLE EMAIL APP WINDOW-

Thank you so very much !

I DO LOG OUT of webmail because , if I need to go to AOL webmail window for one reason or another . I use 2 different email accounts and have to log in thru webmail to change the p.w. when necessary, and or to block or unblock a sender. To use account #1 it has a different email address...@aol AND with a different p.w. different from the second account - Account #2 has a different p.w. and email address....@aol therefore I DO LOG HAVE TO LOG OUT. "Hence my concern and confusion" - One account is for digital newspapers; business reports and just "stuff" while the other email account is for personal emails - I appreciate your patience and the most clear instructions -

OK one last question/concern...If I do the WHOLE AOL thing, removing both accounts and then putting back in - ONE THE LONG FORM of AOL's PROCEDURE/STEPS to update by October 20th , the IMAP AND SMTP settings are different thanthe original settings, when I brought AOL into APPLE MAIL window. Please give me your input on:

INCOMING IMAP SERVER: EXPORT.IMAP.AOL.COM (hmmm they added the word "export"?)

PORT 993 Requires SSl/yes Requires: - authentication yes

OUTGOING SMTP SERVER: SMTP.AOL.COM

PORT 465

IS THERE ANY HOPE that Apple People will STEP IN AND HELP ONE AND ALL ON THIS AOL "missive of change DUE DATE OCTOBER 20 2020" ??? (and if the Cavalry is coming from Apple time is of the essence! Before the DD rather than after - After all this is an Apple APP that we BRING AOL into Apple's Email Mail Account.

I have read and reread and then searched APPLE SUPPORT for how to do this and how to do that and how to recovery and how to safe I DO NOT FEEL secure attempting (plus I can't find a lot the terminology used within mail app and mail windows and mail settings AND I AM up to date in updates and OS etc ( many of the pretty pictures apple provides in its instructions don't always match what's representatives on my Mac Bk Pro which I repeat is up to date ) NO, I AM NOT USING SIERRA I KEEP SAYING

UP to date with Catalina! WHICH BTW so many of Apples upgrades and updates, annoying, have dropped many wonderful and fun and helpful apps as far back as Sierra. COME ON APPLE HELP US out! Surely, "A" can see the quagmire the apple mail app and AOL has created that needs clear concise instruction , with pictures of mail settings on a few of the lates OSs!

Hi BD,

My problem is I don't know how to find these things to change them in apple windows settings (?) and or doc connection which I only see when I make a huge mistake- I have a long list of smtp + imap, in the smtp and IMAP drop down box when I see it of accounts not "enabled" but there, at the ready if I need them (can I get rid of them if I keep important info in their offline file folders? Who or where do you suppose I can get remote services or a detailed great video of steps (with pictures) to finalize this STUFF? I GREATLY APPREICATE YOUR PATIENCE AND HELP I am just a very visual person with direction, obviously- nope, I can't even read a map or a residential floor plan. SO sorry! IT IS SAD!

https://help.aol.com/articles/how-do-i-set-up-other-email-applications-to-send-and-receive-my-verizon-net-mail

"To send and receive AOL email via a 3rd party email client, you'll need to manually configure the servers and port numbers with supported AOL Mail info. If you access AOL Mail through mail.aol.com or the AOL app you don't need to make any changes to your settings."

Until the dust settles, I suggest you simply access aol email through mail.aol.com (web mail).

Thanks Steve,

I use inside APPLE MAIL a yahoo account, 2 aos account and gmail. Each account is used for a different reason and of course in ONE WINDOW to view and respond in, sure makes life a little simpler -

I will definitely print this and read and mark it up your suggestion HOWEVER, I don't understand WHY I would use Verizon.net settings on an apple computer using apple mail (I do not even use icloud anything). I brought in 2 AOL different accounts to .It's much easier to read and respond within the one window than log into several accounts per day- The really SCARY THING IS ... AOL SAYS IF YOU 'DON'T do what we say "your account will be deleted"! If it was like that yahoo oath bizz a few years ago... procrastination was not a major issue, waiting the dust to settle and see what a person REALLY HAD TO REPSOND TO OR PERFORM. Email account of yahoo was "safe" for several months after the missive/threat of "OATH" - Thanks again- open to hearing more ESPECIALLY if APPLE would respond in a timely manner as month or 2 ago I attempted to resolve this by phone support to no avail. Do you know if Cnet or D. Pogue or ? might have additional hints? I live in a large condo building and put on our intranet "looking for people using AOL in apple mail- Lots of techie's in ATX - no respont yet from my building. Most here use gmail

Here was the link I intended: https://help.aol.com/articles/allow-apps-that-use-less-secure-sign-in

I was suggesting that you use web mail as a stopgap temporarily to give you more time to get AOL email working properly with Apple Mail. Long term, yes, web mail might not be to everyone's liking, but it will work.

AOL did suggest for this update to remove and then re-add your AOL email account(s). Adding an AOL account should not be too hard with Apple Mail because it is one of the ones that is automatically configured.
