Apple Watch (1st Generation) will not pair to my Iphone XS. Stuck on Update screen.

Apple Watch (1st Generation) will not pair to my Iphone XS. It gets stuck on the update screen and claims that my IPhone XS is not up to date. I bought the watch off a friend and the serial number is slightly erased otherwise I would contact support. My phone is up-to-date. I've tried letting the phone attempt to pair/ recognize the update over night, but that didn't work. I've also tried factory resetting it twice.

I don't know what else to do with it. Does Generation 1 just not pair well with older phones?
