How to get Apple 30" Cinema Display (Dual-link DVI-D) to work with MacBook Pro 2017 (with Touchbar)

Hi guys, and greetings from Ireland.

I'm looking for some help and advice. I have a MacPro 12 Core (Mid 2010) that I use with my Apple 30" Cinema Display (Non-Thunderbolt Version) and my new BenQ PD3200U 4K Monitor. Recently I got back into DJing, so I now want to use my Apple 30" Cinema Display (Dual-link DVI-D Version) with my MacBook Pro 2017 (with Touchbar)... is there any adaptor or cable fix that I can get to pair this very old, but still very good, HD monitor with my laptop for my DJing setup..?

Any comments or suggestions very much appreciated.

Regards,

Anthony

You'll need something like this: https://www.startech.com/en-us/audio-video-products/cdp2dvidp

or this: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01N78S0OT/ref=twister_B07DXHH616?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1

Do note, the Cinema Display will not be able to support the full resolution the MacBook Pro can output so you will need to reduce the resolution to something the display can handle in System Preferences->Displays

In some areas the Apple Mini DisplayPort to Dual-link DVI adapter is also available on the used market, was around US$100 new, but variable now. In the US, that is eBay. (Apple's convention is to consistently name the ports from the computer-end outward, which is not followed by many others.)

This is combined with a (4k rated) third-party USB-C to mini DisplayPort adapter to get the desired results. NB>> the Dual Link DVI adapter MUST be powered with a 5 Volt supply on its USB-A pigtail, or it will not operate.

User ScottCycle did his this way, slightly before Mini DisplayPort adapters were generally available. So his diagram show a USB-C to Full size DisplayPort, then a DisplayPort to Mini DisplayPort adapter. His use of the Apple Multiport adapter AV is used ONLY to provide USB through the display's USB ports, and for USB power for the Dual-Link DVI adapter.

Hi Phil and very nice to meet you. Thank you so so much for your reply... I have looked at both and they both look the same but the price difference is massive... ooohhhh I see now... the cheaper one supports a less ideal resolution... I'm currently running my Apple Display using my MacPro at 2560px x 1440px... if I bought the more expensive version... would the MacBook Pro support that scaled type display resolution you think...?

The firewire option was just ridiculous to try. Firewire is a data transfer protocol not video. the 30" Cinema display receives video through the DVI connector not the Firewire connector.

Anyway, yes if you want the full 2560*1600 you need the more expensive adapter, with the full Dual DVI support.

Its a bit cheaper through Amazon: https://www.amazon.com/StarTech-com-Type-C-Dual-DVI-D-adapter/dp/B07VF1PP8T

here's another cheaper option that claims to support the higher resolutions: https://www.amazon.com/CAC-1510-DVI-D-Active-Adapter-1600P/dp/B07QKM856C/
