iMovie blackout video issues

Hello,

I'm in need of some help! So my computer is running on Catalina 10.15.6, my iMovie is the version 10.1.15 and I am having troubles importing a full video on iMovie without it blacking out( the audio is still working).

I imported videos from my SD card on to my computer and the video shows up fine in Quicktime player. I am having no problems seeing the video. However, once I upload it to my iMovie it shows the beginning of the video but half way through it blacks out. I have restarted my computer, Restarted my iMovie app and tried another computer but it keeps doing the same thing. The crazy part is is that all my other videos uploaded fine its just this one! What am I doing wrong?

Hi, Mariahsamp.

Welcome to the Apple Support Communities. It sounds like you’re able to hear audio when you import videos from your camera into iMove, but the video does not appear. We can understand why you’d want to resolve this.

All the best.

Hi,

If none of the diagnostics work in the link posted by sterling r, then try the following:

Expand out your timeline and scroll through around the half way point. Look for any white flashes, artifacts, or anything that might indicate corruption at that point, and cut it out from the video.

If no luck, try converting your troublesome clips to H.264, Mp4/AAC with the free download, Handbrake. Do that even if the codec already is indicated to be Mp4/AAC. Re-rendering often cures the issue.

You can get Handbrake here:

https://handbrake.fr/

A simple way to do it is to open Handbrake and do a File/Open Source. Navigate to your video and choose it as the source from the resulting screen. Then do File/Start Encoding. Wait a couple of minutes for the conversion to complete. Then save and import the converted clip into iMovie. Now see if the converted clip plays all the way through.
