'Cannot load message' error in mail

When I open my mail on icloud.com in windows, I am able to view emails at first. But after one or two mails I get this pop up with the error 'Cannot load message'. If I click it away and reload the mail I can read it however. This popup makes it impossible to read my emails. It happens on both chrome and microsoft edge browsers. Chrome gives the notification 'not secure' for icloud.com.

Hope someone can help!

Definitely it is a work around to double click the mail message to open, it's what I've had to do.

It takes a lot more time for something that is obviously not working right.

As a side note this seemed to start happening to me soon after linking my work outlook to my icloud, I was thinking maybe that caused the problem. Not sure if anyone else here is in that situation.

I haven't changed my browser and I linked my icloud mail to Outlook years ago -- those didn't change between when everything worked and now.


I have noticed that if I bring up the content in the popup window that the Preview pane will usually populate with the content after I close the popup window. It is as if the Preview pane is loading verrrrrrrrrry slowly at times.

I also get the error "Cannot load message ...."


I do not have Dell laptop. I use a Windows desktop machine.


Within the last month, I did a completely fresh install of Windows and re-installed all apps. All of the drivers and apps are completely updated.


I do use Microsoft Office 365, but I am getting the error when I access my icloud mail messages through the Vivaldi browser.


I agree that this is not limited to a single browser. In looking at the replies above, people are experiencing this on both Windows and a Mac while using Safari (on the Mac) and Firefox, Chrome, Edge, and Vivaldi on Windows. That is a pretty wide footprint for the error!

That makes me wonder if this issue is on the server side rather on the machines of the end users (that's us, lol).


I use iCloud for Windows and update that when an update is available. So downloading iCloud for Windows wouldn't solve the issue.


All tech support (regardless of the app) seem to default to blaming some other app or part manufacturer. If this isn't a "known issue" then it ought to be!


I don't know how to get tech support to look at this thread, does anyone else know?

I also have the Cannot load message issue on a 2018 Mac Book Pro 2018 running Mojace 10.14.6. Firefox 81.0.1, Safari Version 14.0 (14610.1.28.1.10), and Chrome Version 86.0.4240.80 (Official Build) (x86_64). The Cannot load message happens in all 3 browers. Cleared the cache nothing works. I am running Outlook for corp mail but this machine is not on the company firewall. The error message would happen intermittently now it's all the time almost every email, and now double clicking to open the email isn't working at all. My app is working on my phone. Getting super sick of this and am thinking of ditching the Apple echo sphere! Hope there is a fix soon or I'm out!

I've also been getting these annoying 'Cannot load message' errors consistently over the pat 3 weeks. It's recently worsened - (Windows 7, Chrome -current version, clearing cache and reinstalling Chrome did not fix.)

For each message I want to read I have to:

1.) Click OK to close the 'Cannot load message' error window that opened after reading/deleting the current message.

2.) Double click the next message to open it (this is necessary b/c the preview screen is blank. So now I have to open EVERY message I want to read instead of using the preview pane. The first time I attempt to open the message a blank window opens for a second, then closes on it's own.

3.) Repeat Step 2 - This is consistent - only on the 2nd attempt to open a message will it display.

4.) Repeat all 3 steps for the next message.

Hey Apple - y'all have know about this for WEEKS!

Would appreciate an honest update!!! When will this be fixed?

So many people I've contacted are experiencing this issue. Yes the cookies have been addressed, our internet connects are fine. This is an Apple issue that they haven't addressed. Yeah the work around of "just keep clicking on the message until it loads" it definitely works!.


I have no interest of a work around when it comes to Apple technology or the money that consumers spend release after release.. Many people as well as myself expect a solid answer / fix, so deliver it!

I've had this 'can not load message' problem for a few months now on my iMacs, which are used for my company business as well as personal. In addition, my calendars and contacts have become corrupted at times. I have a strong suspicion this is the result of our IT department adding new security measures to its Microsoft Outlook programs and that these are corrupting the Apple ones. Am I right in sensing that some others with the same widespread and yet unsolved problem are also using Outlook? If so, maybe the Apple engineers should be looking at this possibility for solutions.
