imovie capturing from dv tape advice

I am not a regular imovie user. I need to capture 70 x mini DV tapes for archive. I don't want each tape broken into clips on capture - I just want one long recorded clip for each tape. There used to be an option to stop the breaking up into clips but I can't see it in imovie preferences any more - all it gives me are prefs related to stills. Any advice on the best way forward?

i just want to capture each tape at best resolution and store on a hard drive. I also couldn't see how to capture to an external hard drive. Where is this option?

Thank you

You are correct that there is no option in iMovie 10 to eliminate the time breaks on import. I recall that iMovie 6 used to have that feature. iMovie 10 will likely break the recording into segments created whenever you stopped and started recording a clip with the camera. I believe that if you can capture directly into QuickTimePlayer that it might not have the breaks. You could try with a few minutes of capture.

Also, you can always import everything onto iMovie, breaks and all, and then share it out to a Movie, and that will merge all of the breaks. You will then have one long clip that you could store on your hard drive and later re-import back into iMovie for editing if you want.

QuickTime will not capture in native DV.

There are 2 quality options one is H264 and the highest quality is ProRes.

When you select the quality options you will be shown the format.

QuickTime will capture DV tape in one long video.

iMovie will capture in DV format but with breaks.

Capturing DV tape in iMovie 10 with recent OSs can be difficult, but I assume you have tested this with iMovie and QuickTime already???

I have only just seen the remark that Rich made about Catalina /DV tape and QuickTime.

If you do go for capturing in iMovie then set a new library on the external hard drive for your media to end up on the external hard drive.
