Any suggestions on how to identify third party items that might be set to have problems with "legacy system extensions" but not purchased from or through Apple?

Go to Apple > About This Mac > System Report > Software > Extensions and wait for the list of extensions to load.

It could take a while to load the list, especially if you have a mechanical hard drive. With an SSD and it takes my system about 45 seconds to load and show the list of extensions.
