iTunes 12.8.2.3 and iOS 13.7 - Can't Sync Devices Anymore

I'm running the latest version of MacOS High Sierra and I have the latest version of iOS and iTunes for the platforms respectively. I can't sync any devices via iTunes that are running iOS 13.7. iTunes just crashes after the backup process completes before new music can be synced to my iPhone Xs or my iPod Touch (7th generation). I'm using a genuine lightning cable and I've even gone so far as to reinstall iTunes. I've restarted all devices. I think the latest iOS update broke something in iTunes. I'm perplexed as Apple just updated iTunes, for MacOS High Sierra, to ensure interoperability with the latest iOS. There was a long period where iTunes and iOS didn't work together for those of us still running MacOS High Sierra.

This needs to be fixed right away Apple.

I called Apple Tech support and the issue was a corrupted iTunes library file. Thankfully, I've encountered this issue many times in the past and I save a plethora of copies of that library file all over the place, including my Time Machine Backup, which is a must!!!

So glad for backups!!!

I troubleshooted on my own for like 2.5 hours and this was the final attempt before I asked for help from Tech Support.

I wish my iTunes library wouldn't crash so much, but at least I know what to do now.

I appreciate the guidance, but the only information I have, and it is not up to date, resides on my classic ipod. Is there a way to restore from the ipod? iTunes ver-12.8.2.3, OS 10.13. That will get me about 90% of what I lost. Also, I always kept my iTunes on an external HD because of its size and would like to reclaim as much as possible, then try to rebuild the last 10% .

I will tell you where to look in your time machine backup...however, your time machine backup may not reflect the latest version of your iTunes library file....it may be weeks or months old. Therefore I will show you how to navigate to the iTunes library file on your computer (Mac), that way you can copy and paste it all over the place just in case the main iTunes library file gets corrupted. This instruction set if for Apple Computers only....

For the iTunes library file on your computer go to Finder and Click on your harddrive / solid state drive name > Users > your account username (usually it has a home icon next to it) > Music > iTunes

The two files to copy and paste (but NOT in that folder) are iTunes Library.itl & iTunes Library.xml. Select a different location on your HDD / SSD.

You can place a copy in the root directory of your music folder or any other place that you feel comfortable, just not in the same folder that you found them in.

Now for your iTunes Library file via Time Machine here's where you go. If you have everything in working order I would highly recommend doing a current Time Machine backup. Ideally you should do one, at a minimum every 2-3 weeks, depending on how much stuff you download and how much work you do on your computer. It may need to be more often than that depending on your circumstances.

Finder > External HDD or SSD > Backups.backupDB > Device Name (iMac or MacBook / Pro, etc. - I actually have 2 Mac products so here's where I select which backup root folder to look in) > Latest > Users > Your account name (which should be the same name as your iMac or MacBook / Pro) > Music > iTunes (then look for the same 2 files - iTunes Library.itl & iTunes Library.xml)

Same principle applies....copy and paste those 2 files, not in the directory that you found them in, but just about anywhere else is fine. I stick mine in the root directory of the music folder. Just remember that each time you add music to iTunes to replace the extra copies of those 2 files wherever you saved them. They will NOT automatically update, only the main copy in the iTunes folder will update. Just get in the habit of making more frequent copies of those 2 files in case you don't want to do extra Time Machine Backups all the time.

I hope this helps...

Then unfortunately, you're going to have to rebuild your library, by importing all of the files in your iTunes folder on your Mac. Thankfully, the artwork and the changes that you've made to the files are inside of the meta-data of the files themselves. If you have a solid state harddrive, this will be faster. Depending on the size of your library it could take 3-5 hours. Sorry for the bad news.
