Safari 14.0 Top Sites no longer an option?

Just updated Safari to 14.0 and can no longer set Open to Top Sites in Preferences ... well, can no longer find any trace of Top Sites.

Just me, or is this an intended change that just leaves me wishing that I had skipped the update?

you can "pin sites" so they show up like this:

you do this by the following link:

Pin frequently visited websites in Safari on Mac

you can also "add bookmark " to "favourites":

and they will show up on the start page like this:

Yep, apple aparently has turned into Microsoft from 1990 and thinks they know best with updates that completely eliminate features and neuter fucntionality. Between the millenials writing the code who would not know "intuitive" if it bit them in the *** and the power hungry money grabbing apple management team it looks like it may be time to go back to windows.... I am done with apple products and apple updates for sure!

"JUST ME"? NO, NOT JUST YOU!! And no "HELPFUL ANSWERS"! RIDICULOUS to remove "TOP SITES" without notifying users BEFORE downloading a new version of Safari that entirely eliminates it. TOP SITES is tried, true, and create(D!) great functionality, which the new platform has no WYSIWYG emulation. Providing users with a transition option AT LEAST could provide for a heads-up before ******* everyone off! Which clearly many are! Including me! Now I'm spending half a day trying to figure out how to get back to my TOP SITES to get work done! BAD MOVE APPLE!!

Trouble with that is that things stop working eventually if you ignore updates. For example I couldn't work out why there was suddenly no sound on my MBA- tried everything, shutting down etc..... then realised there was a software update which I had not accepted (in case something like losing topsites happens again) - but I decided to do it and sound came back!

Well yes, I eventually added them to my favourites. But that's not my point is it?

Apple (in my opinion) should have placed them there automatically following the upgrade. It most definitely should not have removed them and forced me to rummage around in a .plist file to look for the URLs for something I had saved. Equally, if it wanted to force a new look to the browser upon us, I think it should have been polite enough to offer a return to the "old" way of thinking, if only to allow some time for me to migrate things over as Apple didn't see fit to do that for me.

Earlier this week my beloved iMac crashed and it took me well over a week to resurrect it. I came close to ditching it for a Windows 10 machine as I have a lot of software that is 32bit only and can't be run in Catalina (or Big Sur) meaning I'm stuck with Mojave. I still use iPhoto as the way it sorts the photos suits my way of thinking much better than Photos (or whatever replaced iPhoto is called). Sadly as the iPhone and iPod become more popular, macOS appears to be aligning itself more and more with iOS. I don't care for iOS at all and am worried by the direction macOS is heading. I stopped using Windows back in 2005 as I got fed up with Microsoft telling me how I should do things and what programs I should use. It now seems that macOS is doing a similar thing and I no longer enjoy using the OS as I used to. That Windows PC could be delivered sooner rather than later.

@ikrupp,

That point is easily understood, but not the same from a work flow perspective, when one's workflow isn't static & requires ongoing change.

Sorry, your response sounded condescending.

Just because you may not have used the feature in-depth as designed, doesn't mean it's loss isn't hugely irritating/disruptive to those who did.

I just noticed it yesterday as my 2013 MBA had two available updates - one Safari to 14.0.01 - which happened automatically (I must remember to turn that off!) and the other is the upgrade to Big Sur - not sure I want to do that one yet until I read more reviews. Not sure yet how the re-instated Top Sites works - have tried moving my Favourites down into the top sites section but that doesn't work and adding them from the address bar doesn't seem to either - but hey ho - at least someone listened and we might have a return to what every one wants. It doesn't look exactly like it did but hopefully can be worked with.
