Safari 14.0 Top Sites no longer an option?

Just updated Safari to 14.0 and can no longer set Open to Top Sites in Preferences ... well, can no longer find any trace of Top Sites.

Just me, or is this an intended change that just leaves me wishing that I had skipped the update?

you can "pin sites" so they show up like this:

you do this by the following link:

Pin frequently visited websites in Safari on Mac

you can also "add bookmark " to "favourites":

and they will show up on the start page like this:

have fun

This was a horrible decision by Apple. The worst in recent memory. Now my workflow is severely hampered, and I'm going to have to find a workaround. Which will probably will take half a day to get configured that way I previously functioned.

I'm going to have to put all of my former Top Sites as favorites which is going to REALLY screw up my favorites bar essentially making it useless. The thing is that the favorites bar served a completely different function than Top Sites. This is beyond frustrating.

The only reason I can think as to why apple did this is to make MacOS more like iOS. Here's the thing, a computer IS NOT AN iOS DEVICE! And it isn't used in this way. It is becoming increasingly annoying that Apple wants to make their Mac computers into an iOS device. They should catch a clue from Microsoft's debacle when they tried to make Windows 8 on the desktop like a mobile operating system. If a consumer wants iOS device on a big screen, get an iPad Pro.

Again beyond frustrating to have to deal with this.

I am absolutely blown away by the unannounced, unsolicited removal of my Top Sites. As many others have now stated, I totally have relied on my Top Sites since becoming a Mac user in 2011. I have not idea what to do or where to go from here. How totally disrespectful. At the very least, Safari should have given us a significant heads up to search out and relearn an entirely new way to approach computer use. Return Top Sites. I sure as **** wish the automatic update had never, ever happened . Bad Form!! I'd rather swear but I won't

I must be an idiot when it comes to computers. I don't even know where to go when you say Home-->library--> safari. I tried Finder and wasn't successful. Can you please dumb it down for me? Seriously, I obviously need click by click instructions. Lump me into the "can't teach an old dog new tricks" category. I HATE CHANGE!!!

I agree with everyone else on this thread that this was a stupid decision that has negatively affected my work, and I agree that my MacBook Pro is not an iPhone, so Apple should stop trying to make them work exactly the same.

The one thing I do not see on this thread so far is any response from Apple customer support, offering to support us paying customers. Apple--if you bother to read these threads, take note that you have angered your customers. Put top sites back, please.

Ack. They hid the library folder again. Go to finder. Click on "go" (across the top when you've opened finder). Click on "home" in the drop down menu that opens when you click on "go." Click "view" then "view options". When you do that, you should see an options to "show library". I don't know why they keep hiding the library!!

Because they don’t want amateur, unknowledgeable users screwing around with things that could brick the entire computer, that’s why. And knowledgeable users already know how to access the library folders, all three of them.

I'm glad to know I'm not the only one infuriated by the removal of Top Sites. Favorites on the start page is redundant with the Favorites bar, which I used for an entirely different purpose. Frequently Visited Sites doesn't let me add the sites I actually visit most frequently. If they actually happen to show up, I can't pin them there. The "new and improved" Safari overall is mostly terrible, though I do like the ability to hover over a tab to get a preview. (The "new and improved" iOS 14 is even worse. That's another story, I guess, but I've been spending an inordinate amount of time looking for workarounds lately.)

Does anyone know of an extension that could restore the functionality of the old Top Sites? Thanks for any suggestions.
