iOS 14 iPhone update - camera not working.

Hi all,

I have an iPhone 7 (model number: MN922X/A) and I recently updated the software to version 14 (iOS 14) and now my camera doesn’t work.

I have done some obvious troubleshooting steps of restarting my iPhone, and switching between camera modes and applications. The front and rear cameras are both black.

Anyone have any idea on how I can go about fixing this issue? looking forward to reading any thoughts you might have :)

Please note, I had not performed a backup of my iPhone before proceeding with the update.

Why re-print lies? Apple did work on the topic of this ancient thread and fixed it last quarter.

If you genuinely think 14.4 rather than 14.0 is still causing this and you want it to be considered in 14.5.x or 15

  1. Start a new thread specifically referencing 14.4
  2. Put in a fresh bug report for 14.4

Product Feedback - Apple

Nobody of any significance ( I including myself) will ever read this thread again and offer advice. Neither experts, nor Apple. It's too old.

Chat amongst yourselves by all means if it make you feel good but nothing will happen as a result.

Thanks Peter - the force reset hasn’t fixed my camera issue.

I did perform a back-up of my iPhone after the fact, however, it’s quite disappointing to consider doing so, as this is around a 3 hour process from my end (dependant on back-up size).

I certainly won’t be upgrading my iPhone anytime soon, as I don’t want to have to reset my phone after each patch.

This is a pretty poor customer experience. Imagine if I wasn’t working in IT and I didn’t know how to perform a full back-up and restore my iPhone. Hopefully I don’t have to pay Apple for a service repair on my phone after installing their update.

Thanks William.

Hopefully to all those people belonging to generation X or earlier, who don’t know a thing or two about technology can jump onto the Apple forum to access these videos.

Thanks for your time Peter & William. I performed the reset after completing the encrypted back-up on my Windows computer, but no luck.

Being in Melbourne, Australia, I’ll just have to wait another month or two until our lockdown finishes before I can head into an Apple store 👍

Not a permanent fix, but there is a way to use your camera if you've got this issue. I had a chat with an advisor last night, who told me to turn my flashlight on from the control centre and open the camera app. You need to wait about 15 seconds but the camera will start to work. (Also works for snapchat and instagram too) I hope this helps.

A camera repair at an Apple Store means a replacement phone at your cost. You might want to see if there is a patch. As this only affects a few iPhone7's that may not be forthcoming. Nobody knows yet.

I suggest you at least try shajeeya's workaround (above this) and see if yours turns on too. It may help the Apple developers understand the problem.

Well, I have wasted almost a day trying to fix it. Tried everything I found on the internet, reset my phone and even tried reinstalling with iTunes but there is no option to it. I am still trying with everything as of now as well so how do you see this as I am just here in my busy life doing nothing. How do you think I would have come across this page if I was doing nothing?

My update is that they ran diagnostics and say the camera is not detected (no taking any responsibility that it was the fault of the update) it seems it got worse since I ran the diagnostic - now Face ID is not working and no longer working on Instagram and it was before. Made an appointment to go into the store( I am glad they are open)

249 people clicked “me too” this is a glitch with the update not iPhone 7s . As far as I read only 2 people said 7s and others haven’t said. Are you employed by apple or something that is causing you to have such a hard time believing this? Glitches happen with updates all the time I usually wait to update and this is what happens when I did it quickly. Basically everyone is going to have to get their phone looked at since the update really messed up some of our phones (249+ people) and our phones no longer recognize a camera which is according to apple staff, unfortunately there is no quick fix for most of us.
