Mac not unlocking after watchOS 7 update

Hi all,

After upgrading to watchOS 7 on Series 3, auto unlock is not working anymore. I get the "activating" message when trying to enable it again on the Mac and then the message I must make sure the watch is unlocked, on my wrist and the phone must be unlocked too. Everything checks out.

Already rebooted Mac and watch. Anyone else having the same problem? thanks!

I've finally fixed it! I found a bunch of errors related to "AutoUnlock" in the Console that was hinting to me that there was some invalid state on my Mac with keys and plists not being reset properly.

Steps (follow at your own discretion)

  1. Open "Keychain Access"
  2. In "View", enable "Show Invisible Items"
  3. Search for "Auto Unlock"
  4. You should see a whole bunch of application passwords for "Auto Unlock: XXXX's ..."
  5. Select all records and delete (this will reset/disable auto unlock on other Macs if you use multiple Macs)
  6. Whilst still in "Keychain Access", search for "AutoUnlock" (no space)
  7. There should be 4 entries for "tlk" "tlk-nonsync" "classA" "classC"
  8. Select 4 records and delete (don't worry if they re-appear, the system repairs this automatically)
  9. Open "Finder" and navigate to "~/Library/Sharing/AutoUnlock"
  10. There should be two files "ltk.plist" and "pairing-records.plist"
  11. Delete both files
  12. Open "System Preferences" and try enabling auto unlock. You may need to enable it twice, the first attempt will fail.

Thanks for posting this solution. I followed the 12 steps provided and then restarted my iPhone, Watch, and MacBook. After restart, the first attempt to enable the feature failed as before, but the second attempt worked. I spent about an hour and a half working with Apple Support trying to resolve this with no luck. Thanks again for posting the solution!

I had same problem after updating all operating systems and receiving my series 6, tried "untoggling" and toggling a few settings. Lived with it for a coupe of days, figured there would be an update to fix the problem. I decided to try one more thing......turned phone, watch and mac off, turned back on in that order, went to system preferences on mac and went to privacy tab, checked the box to allow watch to open and voila! It is working as it always did! Sometimes just powering down fixes everything LOL!

I tried the method outlined by stoska992 but this didn't work for me. As I seen others mention PRAM and SMC resets with no luck I tried booting into safe mode and was successfully able to switch on the unlock with watch option. This stuck upon reboot also. I'm not sure was it some combo of the keychain/plist + safe mode or just the safe mode that got it there in the end.

Thank you for this. Worked great in my case. I know that WatchOS7 has been driving me crazy the last several days. It is one of the few times in my history of Apple products that i really would go back to an earlier OS version if I could easily do so. My Series 3 LTE watch crashes at least a few times every day now. Was solid on every version of WatchOS before for the last three years. :(.
