Mac not unlocking after watchOS 7 update

Hi all,

After upgrading to watchOS 7 on Series 3, auto unlock is not working anymore. I get the "activating" message when trying to enable it again on the Mac and then the message I must make sure the watch is unlocked, on my wrist and the phone must be unlocked too. Everything checks out.

Already rebooted Mac and watch. Anyone else having the same problem? thanks!

I've finally fixed it! I found a bunch of errors related to "AutoUnlock" in the Console that was hinting to me that there was some invalid state on my Mac with keys and plists not being reset properly.

Steps (follow at your own discretion)

  1. Open "Keychain Access"
  2. In "View", enable "Show Invisible Items"
  3. Search for "Auto Unlock"
  4. You should see a whole bunch of application passwords for "Auto Unlock: XXXX's ..."
  5. Select all records and delete (this will reset/disable auto unlock on other Macs if you use multiple Macs)
  6. Whilst still in "Keychain Access", search for "AutoUnlock" (no space)
  7. There should be 4 entries for "tlk" "tlk-nonsync" "classA" "classC"
  8. Select 4 records and delete (don't worry if they re-appear, the system repairs this automatically)
  9. Open "Finder" and navigate to "~/Library/Sharing/AutoUnlock"
  10. There should be two files "ltk.plist" and "pairing-records.plist"
  11. Delete both files
  12. Open "System Preferences" and try enabling auto unlock. You may need to enable it twice, the first attempt will fail.

Yep. The funny thing is that my wife has the same watch as me bought the same day and it seems fine. But, yes after about a day I unpaired it and set it up as a new watch. It seemed better for several hours but then had the same issues again. :(. I even uninstalled most of the watch applications since I don't really use most of them anyway but that didn't help either.

Hey everyone,

When I first posted this, I never imagined the issue was this spread, which is unfortunate since auto unlock is a feature we all have learned to rely on.

watchOS 7.0.1 is out and I hope it doesn't break everything again.

Has anyone installed it already? Did auto unlock stop working? Maybe for those who had no success with stoska992's workaround, 7.0.1 might make auto unlock work again this time around?

Thank you! This worked for me as well with a couple of additional steps. I rebooted my watch, iphone and macbook after making the changes. Then I had to re-enable auto unlock one more time.

It also appeared to fix an issue I had with the Homerun app not syncing to my watch. I guess something got messed up with the upgrade to watchOS 7, iOS 14, and macOS and clearing these files out reset the sync/handoff connectivity between the three.

This also worked for me but when I selected the watch to unlock as usual, the process failed immediately over and over again almost as if it wasn't even trying. So I rebooted my 2018 Mac Mini running Catalina 10.15.7, my iPhone 11 Pro running iOS 14.0.1 and my Series 5 Apple Watch running Watch OS 7.01 and tried again. It failed the first time so I tried one more time considering this was the "it will fail the first time" failure. And bingo it worked.

Worked fine after rebooting MacBook Pro.

Auto-unlock was working until WatchOS 7.0 update. 7.0.1 didn't work either. Tried un/re-pairing watch with iPhone. No joy.

There were A LOT of "Auto Unlock" from step 3. I only ever paired my watch once before the attempt to fix this issue.

Thanks for posting this! Many hours saved!!!

Later,

Jeff

After several attempts and then a restart, it worked. The folks at AppleCare tried to fix it, failed after trying at great length, and then collected system info and sent it to engineering. After several days, engineering still had no solution, despite their best efforts.

So, a particularly big THANK YOU! Is appropriate here.
