Icons become scrambled after flipping size switch under Home Screen and Dock

Noticed that icons where no longer of uniform size after upgrading to iPadOS 14. Went to Home Screen and Dock in an attempt to fix. When that didn’t help, I switched back to small only to find that ALL my meticulously sorted apps where now completely scrambled. It will take days to resort. Please fix ASAP.

Congratulations. Yes, I too have experienced the problem of inconsistent sizing of Home Screen icons after updating to iPadOS14; I note also that the problem also extended to sizing of Widgets and the new Stack.

The obscure sizing was also strange in that some smaller icons would return to expected sizing - and others would shrink. Switching between Home screens caused different icons to resize on each of the Home Screens.

Having spend hours searching the updated iPad User Guide for details of this strange new feature (anticipating that the OS had some cunning new feature that was eluding logic) - I gave up - and force restarted my iPad; doing so appears to have resolved this particular bug.

  • On an iPad with a Home button: Press and hold the top button and the Home button at the same time. When the Apple logo appears, release both buttons.
  • On an iPad with Face ID: Press and quickly release the volume up button, press and quickly release the volume down button, then press and hold the top button. When the Apple logo appears, release the button.

I sincerely hope this helpfully resolves the problem for you too!

I suspect that what you see now isn’t actually a fault.

When your Home Screen & Dock settings are set to More, you can fit many more icons on-screen than when configured to Bigger. When switching back to Bigger, from More, the excess icons have to be moved to a different Home Screen; this, I believe, is what you’re seeing - and is behaviour carried-over from iPadOS13.x.

I you are seeing some other behaviour, please share what you’re seeing with the community.

You are correct in describing the behaviour. However, when apps from Home Screen 8 are now distributed between Home Screen 2-8. Something is wrong. You are correct that I experienced this behaviour in previous iOS versions. I remember having to spend days sorting my apps again. This time around, I had forgotten this behaviour and got caught. If iOS could automatically group similar apps together automatically, then that would be great. Then one would only need to tweak the odd app.
