iMessage badges stopped displaying after battery hit zero

For several full versions (currently on 12.4.8; iPod Touch 6th gen), most times when the battery hits zero, or I power off and on, or do a reset, or even just because (but usually the aforementioned power-related), iMessage badges either perpetually display the messages I had unread at time of shut off, even if all are read, or shows no badge at all even if I have messages.

Power cycling, two-button restart, notifications-off power cycling, all that never works; all that does is the last resort “reset all settings” option, which is a PITA.

And sometimes it’ll fix itself on its own...somehow.

Does anyone know what causes this? Any fixes that aren’t a PITA?

Thanks for using Apple Support Communities. It sounds like you’re having trouble with persistent notification badges for Messages. We’re happy to help.

To start, try signing out of, and then back into iMessage. You can do so by tapping Settings > Messages > Send & Receive > [Apple ID] > Sign Out. You will want to restart your iPod before signing back in.

If that doesn’t help, try reinstalling iOS. While this shouldn’t remove any data from your device, it’s a good idea to have a recent backup handy:
