ISSUE WITH STACKING LARGE WIDGETS (iOS 14)

Am I the only one chasing down widgets to stack them? The large news widget is the one I try to stack with more large news widgets, but when I try to do this the large widget I want to stack Speedy Gonzalez’s it’s way to a billion new blank pages instead of recognizing that no I do not want a ton of blank pages created, I want to stack you. So there am playing hide and seek with my iPhone thinking about the days when iOS wasn’t so emotional. iOS developers, please know that no one’s goal is to open up multiple blank pages ever. Please fix this issue. I just want to stack my **** widgets. And if possible I would LOOoooOooVe to have more control over how long I want a news widget to show its topic before switching to a new topic.

Holy crap, I finally figured out a way to stack them with ease but it's hard to explain. I'll try my best

1) Open 2 large widgets in adjacent pages.

2) Pull Widget#1 into the iPhone dock (bottom bar).

3) Move Widget#1 (where your finger is pressed) slightly above the bar, then back down again so it stops on the page with Widget#2 on it.

4) Using a different finger, move Widget#2 slightly to the side, (enough to displace it but not enough for it to go onto the next page) while holding Widget#1 in the bar.

5) Move Widget#1 up right on top of Widget#2 while holding Widget#2 slightly to the side (because you're holding Widget #2 as well, you can overlap them without them jumping away).

6) Release Widget#2 then Widget#1 immediately after.

7) They should stack.

Hope this helped!!

This worked for me..

Make sure the stack you are building is on the next page to the right and slide the new widget toward that page while holding it at the same height as the stack. It should give you the option to stack them. It was still a little buggy, but this worked the best by far!

I was trying to come at it from the bottom and that always made the stack run away 😆

This is helpful. Sort of worked for me.

I’ve discovered that it’s best not to have your large widget stack at the top of the list on the leftmost widget page (the old widget page).

if you do, and you create a new widget and try to drag it up, sometimes you “miss” or go too far up. Then it drags it to the normal Home Screen and then your folders get blown out.

So best to move the stack down away from the top, next to the new widget. Then stack the new onto the old.

And it does seem to be that when stacking widgets, if something goes wrong, the screens to the right get the folders blown out. So unfortunately since this is the left most screen, everything gets messed up if you don’t do it right.

That’s been my experience so far.

THANK YOU! This was driving me crazy and following your suggestion I managed to get it to work. Tap on the top left corner of the widget and drag it onto the screen to the left, and the large widget there froze in place rather than jumping to another screen. (All of my folders scatter their contents everywhere still though, grrr)

1) Let us assume you already have 1 large widget on the screen [old widget]

2) You created a new large widget on a blank screen [new widget]

3) Touch and hold the new widget until you can drag it (u must not release it until we finish the full following steps)

4) Use another hand to swipe to the screen where you have the old widget

5) Touch and hold the old widget

6) Slowly overlay the new widget to that (remember - you have been holding this for a while and you will release it only in this step)

Hope it will clarify your issue.

If not I will post a video ;)

Thank you for the step by step instructions, I really appreciate it. They’re sort of similar to what I tried but I only found one way to get them to work:

Smart Stack with one widget

New stack that isn’t smart and is only one widget

Repeating again and again and I was able to get it to work—to one by one add one widget to my Smart Stack. That’s how I got it to work. So thank you for this alternative way to build a working Smart Stack!

(Side question: Does anyone know the limit of how many widgets I can have in a Smart Stack?)

I’m surprised more people aren’t complaining about this. Small stacks and Medium stacks work just as expected, it’s only Large that are the jiggle mode nightmare. Maybe that’s why...

Anyways,

Thanks!

You’re welcome 😊

Well, I don’t really understand the difference between a “Smart Stack” and widgets that are manually stacked over one another. (Both have smart rotate function) 🤔

Smartstack by default have some widgets already stacked, whereas manual stack could have widgets that we choose.

Maybe Smart Stack may remember our choice once edited like you mentioned and will be available in that fashion next time we choose it - need to try though.

Yes, most people seem to be using the small and medium ones due to which there are not many discussions happening so far about the large widgets’ issues.

I have also noticed that the medium widget of Siri Suggestions won’t get stacked with any other medium widgets - please tel me if you were able to do it otherwise🤔

This is janky af but worked. Thanks for finding the solution. I sent feedback about this. I think the easiest way to fix it would be to add functionality to the "edit widget" UI. If Apple added a "+" so you could pull up a list of widgets to add you could pick one to add to the stack directly, the problem would be solved in an elegant way.

i'll post an answer that is actually useful, unlike this other fellow because obviously apple hasn't gotten around to fixing this issue as i just had the same issue and found the solution elsewhere.

to fix this: have the two large widgets on pages next to each other. start the edit home page jiggle. then, grab one large widget and hold it down with one finger till it allows you to move it but do not move it. with another finger slide over to the page where the stack is and it should allow you to drop it into the stack on the first try.

for some reason dragging the large widgets causes problems but doing it this way i described works. you need to slide to the next page with a different finger, don't drag the widget.
