Activity GPS issues after watchOS 7 and iOS 14 updates

This morning I upgraded my iPhone XS Max to iOS 14 and my S4 Watch to watchOS 7. I then went for a run, using the Outdoor Run activity on my Watch as usual, holding my iPhone while I ran (as I was listening to a podcast with AirPods). When I finished, everything was recorded as normal, and I could sync the activity to Strava.

Later, I went for a walk. I used the Outdoor Walk activity on my Watch, but this time didn't take my iPhone. When I returned, and attempted to upload the activity to Strava, I received a warning that no GPS/route data was present. I checked the Fitness and Health apps, and sure enough, there was no route on the map - only the starting point.

I spoke to someone at Apple Support and they suggested I turned off/back on a couple of related privacy settings. I have since tried another Outdoor Walk activity, without the phone present, and the problem persists - no GPS/route data.

My wife also tried the same this evening, after upgrading her iPhone X and S4 Watch too. She had the same results - i.e. with just the Watch, no GPS/route information was saved with the activity.

This seems like a bug to me. Has anyone else experienced the same issue, or has any suggestions as to how to fix it?

It also seemed to me, as if turning wifi off on the phone and watch helped. My theory is that the phone doesnt use GPS on an active workout and thus falls back to locating me via nearby wifi SSIDs. This would also explain the extreme rubberbanding of the position indicated in Apple or Google Maps on the phone while a workout is running on the Watch. But some time ago I was pretty sure that I turned Wifi off and still got really low quality of location tracking on a workout....

I think there is something wrong with the phones location API that doesnt want to go into "full power" GPS tracking during a Watch workout so the watch just receives garbage location data...

The only real 100% working workaround is turning on Airplane Mode on the Watch before workouts so it has to use its internal GPS. This has always lead to perfect tracking for me.

On 11th of Feb this is still an issue. And a pretty big one at that.

Both my wife's and my son's AW3 with WatchOS 7.3 are tracking workouts incorrectly (or are not tracking at all).

It's not very helpful to have half of workout tracked and the other half not.

One AW3 is paired with iPhone X, other with iPhone SE 2016.

My AW6 (paired with iPhone 12 Pro) seem not to be affected so far.

It seems there are more and more errors affecting AW3 - first the random restarts after upgrading to WOS7, now this...

I hope it gets fixed soon (although seeing this post is from September 2020 does not give me much hope).

Exactly the same problem using Runkeeper as a stand alone app on a cellular Apple Watch recording the starting point of the run but no map tracking, all other run related data is accurate, i.e time, distance, heart rate, interval management etc etc.

Reset the watch went through all the settings usually flagged as potential resolutions such as location & privacy. Mapped by first run post the reset, then failed to map the 2nd run.

Maybe should have bought a Garmin.......

Clearly it doesn't just work.

So if the watch face turns off, does the go’s also turn off? That is what it looks like to me anyway when logging a track via GAIA GPS using the Watch App (Series 6).

I should add that my iPhone (12 Pro) is ON and in the top of my pack. It is connected via BT to a Bad Elf GPS and the Watch.

The recorded tracks seem to show the watch stops “dropping bread crumbs” and then starts again…as indicated by straight lines (GAIA), or gaps (Workout App). Leads me to believe it shuts off to conserve power after a certain interval. If I check stats frequently, there are no gaps.

I have had the watch face set to “ON when raised” instead of Always ON. So I’ll try it the other way.

Never an issue recording tracks with the iPhone.

The same issue here with iPhone 11 Pro and Watch Series 5 after updating to iOS14 and WatchOS 7. All data (distance, splits, HR etc) transferred across OK after a run this morning - apart from the GPS map and weather conditions. Maps from older runs don't seem to be affected and still show routes. Have just unpaired/re-paired and will go for a walk to see if this works, but hope a fix will be released soon.

I just want to add some info for people that are afraid to loose/already lost data: I am using the free app HealthFit which gets all your Apple Health data and can export it to Strava/iCloud Drive/Google Drive automatically when new data comes in. That way you can have backups of all your data on iCloud/Google Drive including gpx files and tabular spreadsheet exports. Maybe interesting for some of you.

I really hope the data is not lost though, i would imagine Apple syncs it to icloud as well.

Same here. iPhone 11 Pro and Watch S4. Phone seems to be running warm and draining battery faster now. GPS not transferring. Resting heart rate has jumped by about 10. Autosleep app says I’m only sleeping less than 2 hours yet Apple Sleep says 8 hrs (which is correct). Unpairing and repairing hasn’t fixed it. Exact same problem. I have iPhone 11 Pro (iOS 14), apple watch series 3 (watch os7). Problem started immediately after upgrading to ios14 and watch os 7. I have the same symptoms that most mention: ie. single pin of start location but no route info on map, sync of activity time, distance and elevation IS working, all previous workouts also no longer show route information. This problem exists both when I have my iPhone with me and/or when I only have the watch during the walk/cycling workout.

Some have said that unpairing and repairing (with restore from backup) fixed their problem. Others say this does not fix the problem. For me unpairing/repairing and restoring from backup did NOT help.

I share other's concerns that the data (dating back to 2017) may all be lost. I guess we will see.

I am surprised that this issue is not getting more attention. To me this is a critical issue.

Same problem to me and my husband with iPhone 11Plus and AppleWatch 4 AFTER the latest iOS Updates 14/7.

I started run and walk activities with the Apple TrainingsApp on the watch with no GPS-Data at the end - only

the starting point is shown.

Furthermore, the battery life of my watch disappears rapidly (20% in one hour even without an activity!) since

the update...

I decoupled the watch and paired it newly but it did not help.

Hoping the Apple Support will fix the bugs soonest!!!

I'll give you all an update: I called Apple Support again today. They could not find this bug reported to engineering. All previous solutions from you guys (force shutdown, unpair/pair Watch, restore Watch from backup, etc.) did not work for me.

I helped friendly Apple Support with submitting the bug report. Including diagnostics and screenshot from my Apple Watch series 6 (watchOS 7, with correct rings, graphs and workouts) and diagnostics, log reports and screenshots from my iPhone 11 Pro (iOS 14, correct rings, incorrect graphs, missing (but not all) workouts and missing routes/just a pin). Routes from my Watch 2 (not updated to watchOS 7, of course) from last week are also missing, so this must be an iOS 14 bug.

Let's keep out fingers crossed for a fast bug fix and update of iOS 14.

I’m having the same issue on Apple Watch S3 and iPhone XR. I can’t see routes for any workouts since the update. My walking and running workouts are also missing the min and max ‘Elevation’ info, although ‘Elevation gain’ is still there. And I’m also missing the time for the final incomplete km in ‘Splits’ - for example, if I go for a 3.6 km walk, I’ll only get info for the 3km and not the remaining 600m. Hope these issues are resolved soon..
