Activity GPS issues after watchOS 7 and iOS 14 updates

This morning I upgraded my iPhone XS Max to iOS 14 and my S4 Watch to watchOS 7. I then went for a run, using the Outdoor Run activity on my Watch as usual, holding my iPhone while I ran (as I was listening to a podcast with AirPods). When I finished, everything was recorded as normal, and I could sync the activity to Strava.

Later, I went for a walk. I used the Outdoor Walk activity on my Watch, but this time didn't take my iPhone. When I returned, and attempted to upload the activity to Strava, I received a warning that no GPS/route data was present. I checked the Fitness and Health apps, and sure enough, there was no route on the map - only the starting point.

I spoke to someone at Apple Support and they suggested I turned off/back on a couple of related privacy settings. I have since tried another Outdoor Walk activity, without the phone present, and the problem persists - no GPS/route data.

My wife also tried the same this evening, after upgrading her iPhone X and S4 Watch too. She had the same results - i.e. with just the Watch, no GPS/route information was saved with the activity.

This seems like a bug to me. Has anyone else experienced the same issue, or has any suggestions as to how to fix it?

Same issues here.

Obviously it comes from iOS 14. When I use Strava app or NRC app with my AW S4 cellular the GPS route is well recorded and I can export them in Strava or Training Peaks via Rungap app. All data are well recorded (HR, pace, route etc...) BUT, even with all the permissions turned on, the run workout increase move and training rings, but the Strava workout does not appear in the Fitness App.

The new Fitness App is the worst update ever. Very upsetting problem, and by the way all my previous GPS route have vanished too. Hopefully I also recorded them in Training Peaks, Garmin Connect, Strava and Movescount.

The unpair / re-pair solution did not work.

Hope Apple dev will fix this bug ASAP !

I have had exactly the same issue and now confident it is fixed. I think it is an os14 issue rather than the watchos7 isssue.

back up both watch and phone to iCloud.

factory reset phone

restore phone from iCloud back up

wait for around 2 hours for all data to restore.

all seems good now.

GPS data before restore lost unfortunately. However all other elements now seem to match ... steps exercise minutes etc.

just did a walk and left phone at home. Check and all data has now synced including GPS.

hope this helps

from all of the posts it seems that backing up and restoring from iCloud fixes the problem BUT backing up and restoring from Mac/pc does NOT fix the the problem. I tried the full reset/restore from Mac and it did not work. I am not really all that interested in trying again using iCloud. It took long enough from pc (my iPhone has over 300Gb of data on it). The thought of pushing this all to the cloud and pulling it back down would take even longer. I suppose I could get desperate and try this but I would want more assurance than a few lucky people before I invested in that project.

Tried:

Unpair Watch

Reset all settings (phone & watch)

Boot & sync back up (both)

Result: Walked without handset, logged steps upon return. Later that day, walked again but this time on return it logged the exercise (rings etc match on both devices) but steps haven’t moved an inch on the handset, over 10,000 steps out on the watch.

I will now try the ‘factory reset’ making the handset as if it’s been taken out of the box for the first time. This is crazy.

Iphone 7 & Apple Watch 4, both bang upto date with operating systems.

Tried the backup / wipe / restore from iCloud. New things are syncing, but I lost the last month of data in my health app (despite still having ring data in the fitness app). I also can’t see a single one of my prior workouts except for today in the fitness app. Holding out the tiniest bit of hope it’s just super slow to sync, but being real that it’s potentially all gone. Not sure what I did wrong. Frustrated and disappointed, but at least it’s working properly now.

Well, I lost 4 years of data because I used iCloud as my backup. Called Apple to know why and they told me to always make a backup using a pc/mac and to encrypt it with a passcode. Used that weeks later and it worked - for the new data I collected - but from those 4 years is gone :(

also, having the same issues as all of you. Latest detail; put my watch back on after the last update and it turned hot around my wrist I had to take it off. It burned so bad!! Don’t know what happend??

Hello, same issue here. Purchased Apple Watch 6. Previously had the Apple Watch 5. Yesterday set up and transferred over to Apple Watch 6. Everything was working great initially. Then about five hours later I noticed on my Apple Watch 6 I was only showing 100 calories burned for the day. I had a full day with my Apple Watch 5 and burned over 1,000 calories. Initially that correct information transferred to my new Apple Watch 6. I then checked my Fitness App on my iPhone and noticed ALL past workouts using the Apple Watch had gone away. The only workouts remaining are from other connected devices such as Peloton and Orangetheory. I shut down and restarted both devices with no change. I then unpaired and repaired my new watch with no change. I talked to Apple today for over two hours, with no solution. They said many are having this issue and are working on it.

iPhone XR and Watch series 5, have already reset phone and restored from backup (with unpair and repair of watch), which worked for less then 24 hours.

then Watch app would not even open at all and fitness app on phone frozen at midday and only displaying partial information even though watch was showing all rings closed. so couldn’t try unpairing watch because the watch app wouldn’t open, just crashed when opened even with hard reboot of phone.

apple support call (third one), leads to reset to factory settings with NO RESTORE FROM BACKUP, just setting up as new phone. He had not even heard about this issue (I did let him know there were almost 40 pages now).

so now I’ve had to set up my phone as new and unpair and repair the watch as new (no restore).

seems to be working now but we’ll see. This whole issue has me questioning my loyalty to apple for sure

Add me to the list of people experiencing this issue. No gps map showing on the activity app after I go on a run, walk, or bike ride. Only shows my starting point.

Issue noticed right after the ios14 update. I have a watch3 and XR both with latest updates.

Even worse, the activity app removed all gps maps data from before the update.
