Activity GPS issues after watchOS 7 and iOS 14 updates

This morning I upgraded my iPhone XS Max to iOS 14 and my S4 Watch to watchOS 7. I then went for a run, using the Outdoor Run activity on my Watch as usual, holding my iPhone while I ran (as I was listening to a podcast with AirPods). When I finished, everything was recorded as normal, and I could sync the activity to Strava.

Later, I went for a walk. I used the Outdoor Walk activity on my Watch, but this time didn't take my iPhone. When I returned, and attempted to upload the activity to Strava, I received a warning that no GPS/route data was present. I checked the Fitness and Health apps, and sure enough, there was no route on the map - only the starting point.

I spoke to someone at Apple Support and they suggested I turned off/back on a couple of related privacy settings. I have since tried another Outdoor Walk activity, without the phone present, and the problem persists - no GPS/route data.

My wife also tried the same this evening, after upgrading her iPhone X and S4 Watch too. She had the same results - i.e. with just the Watch, no GPS/route information was saved with the activity.

This seems like a bug to me. Has anyone else experienced the same issue, or has any suggestions as to how to fix it?

I have exactly the same issue - I have an iPhone 11 Pro on iOS 14.0.1 and have just purchased an Apple Watch series 6 (upgraded from a series 2). I’ve had no GPS data for over a week now when using the ‘Outdoor run’ activity. This was using both my series 2 and my new series 6. There’s no gps data in the ‘Fitness’ app when I look at the workout, just a pin at my start point. When I import to Strava, there’s no data either. Very annoying as I’m due to run the virtual London marathon on Sunday and I’ll have no GPS data.

I'm not sure how fast they will fix this as it's not affecting everyone. I posted on a YouTube video about this, the guy had tested the Apple Watch S6 with iOS7 and he had no issues with it storing GPS data as one of the things he checked was how much better the GPS tracking seems to be on the S6.

I upgraded my XR to 14.0 then 14.0.1 and purchased a AW 6 which came with WatchOS7 then I updated it to WatchOS7.0.1. I have had all these issues with some workouts just not showing on my iPhone or in heath, data like heart rate data not showing even though it was taken during the workout, old workout routes not showing, new workout routes just showing the starting pin, etc. My iPhone is part of my companies DEP program so backing up to iCloud and restoring is not an option. I however had an XS sitting here that had all content and setting erased, and decided to restore that from my XR using the direct restore from other iPhone option during setup. Anyway after the restore the Activity app looked the same as my XR with old routes missing. So just adding to the discussion that restoring from a backup did not work in my case. To bad there is not an option to just restore my health data from iCloud to see if that works. Guess i am stuck waiting for the bug fix and loosing more and more workout data everyday as it sounds like data recorded during the bugdemic will not be fixed after the update and will be lost if Apple decides to grace us with a fix.

For those of you who have fixed the issue, do the workouts you had during the time you were affected by the bug still show after the fix? I get that route or data like heart rate may be lost, but for the activity that synced to the phone, does it at least remain after the update? I have had perfect months with all 3 rings and at least a 15 min workout everyday ever since December of 2015, so at this point its a OCD (CDO if you put the letters in the correct order) thing.

Thanks in advance.

The workouts during the issue don't change - still have heart rate etc, but the GPS is still not there.

Anyone who has reset and restored from backup and is still having issues, like me, the final solution was to erase all content and settings and set up as a new phone.

when you restore from your backup you are just putting the bug right back on again potentially.

long and not ideal (lost all my downloaded music), but had most of my important Info stored in my iCloud so didn’t lose notes, texts, etc. And a lot of it is stored in your Apple ID as well.

but if you want everything truly fixed, reset to factory and do not restore (set up as new phone), also need to rest watch and re pair it.

Not sure exactly what I did that fixed issue. Things i tried, in no particular order...

Reset watch a couple of times.

Deleted 'latest' apple watch entry as Data Source from health app before re-syncing Watch Made sure there was no actual workout data associated with data source be for deleting. (iphone Health app)

Changed watch name. (Watch app)

Checked Health app privacy - permissions. (watch app and iphone settings)

Recalibrated tracking. (Watch app)

Did a t least one Strava run.

I DID NOT restore/reset iphone.

The workouts that didn't capture workout data never got GPS or Heart data back, BUT rings/stats were not lost.

Took a couple of workouts for VO2 to start calculating/recording a value.

I guess I got lucky to not loose older data.

I've updated to iOS 14.0.1 on iPhone 11 and WatchOS to 7.0.1 on Watch 3 and still no joy. I was hoping they had fixed it and forgotten to mention it in the release notes.

I've been using the Strava app on my phone, but it's a pain taking it out for runs.

Really not impressed and can't believe full resets are necessary to fix it. I had to reset my Watch to fit the WatchOS7 on in the first place, but I have not reset my phone.

I'm holding out and hoping...

Same. It’s awful. Yesterday I ran 9km and it told Strava I’d run 0.65 miles 🤷🏽‍♀️ Today I’ve completed an activity and it’s registered on my Apple Watch 5 but hasn’t even transferred it to my phone so seems to be getting worse.. absolutely fuming. I did tweet Apple and Apple support and private messages them the issues and highlighted this discussion but yet had no further response.. I’m not risking losing all my historical activity by resetting and unpairing and starting again, just praying for a bug fix soon !
