Activity GPS issues after watchOS 7 and iOS 14 updates

This morning I upgraded my iPhone XS Max to iOS 14 and my S4 Watch to watchOS 7. I then went for a run, using the Outdoor Run activity on my Watch as usual, holding my iPhone while I ran (as I was listening to a podcast with AirPods). When I finished, everything was recorded as normal, and I could sync the activity to Strava.

Later, I went for a walk. I used the Outdoor Walk activity on my Watch, but this time didn't take my iPhone. When I returned, and attempted to upload the activity to Strava, I received a warning that no GPS/route data was present. I checked the Fitness and Health apps, and sure enough, there was no route on the map - only the starting point.

I spoke to someone at Apple Support and they suggested I turned off/back on a couple of related privacy settings. I have since tried another Outdoor Walk activity, without the phone present, and the problem persists - no GPS/route data.

My wife also tried the same this evening, after upgrading her iPhone X and S4 Watch too. She had the same results - i.e. with just the Watch, no GPS/route information was saved with the activity.

This seems like a bug to me. Has anyone else experienced the same issue, or has any suggestions as to how to fix it?

Same thing happens to me: After doing a workout (it doesn't matter running, cycling or walking for example) with my Apple Watch Series 4 (watchOS 7.0.1), if I open the Fitness app on my iPhone X (iOS 14.0 .1) and I try to see the route on the map of that registered workout, only the first location of the workout does appear, the start point, but not the entire route that I have followed. However I can see the route in the rest of my old workouts prior to the software update (I updated my watch right after updating my phone).

Apple must fix this bug immediately. It’s unacceptable to have paid such premium prices for this device and lose one of its main features which is sports tracking.

Another one with the same problem. No GPS map coming into the fitness app. And therefore no way of transmitting onwards to Strava etc. I’ve done all the pair / unpair reset stuff, took ages and didn’t work.

Assume this is tied up with the phone getting red hot and battery drain if you go near either the fitness or health apps - the analytics seem to suggest something very wrong is happening.

Have you tried to erase all content and setting on your phone on IOS 14.01? I also did tried everything from un-pair re-pair watch, fresh install of IOS14, updating to 14.01 and watchos 7.01. None of those worked. Only Erase all content and setting on phone worked. This only fixed gps maps on new workouts though and import to strava. Old workout maps still doesnt show.

I just got off the phone with someone on their "health team" - apologies if this was updated in here somewhere but it's too many replies to read through.

there "instructions" they have given engineers to tell us is the backup to icloud, unpair watch, wipe phone, restore from backup, etc...

i explained i only had the free plan. they don't have an answer yet if a local itunes backup would suffice (im old school) but he will go back to the engineers and get me an answer.

I also asked if the icloud free plan would hold a full backup if the majority of the 5GB of space was free. He seemed to think yes (i didn't want to delete all my photos in icloud (i do have them saved on my home PC)....so that might be an option for some of you too.

i am waiting to hear on the itunes backup answer...and am happy to update people as needed.

Ha! Did they act like that was a fix or workaround? Not everyone has the possibility to backup to iCloud. In fact the MDM policy on my iPhone prevents it. So if they are not willing to fix their mistake then I have no choice to move off the Apple System. I have a Mac Book Air, Mac Book Pro, iPad Pro, Apple Watch 6, iPhone XR, iPad Mini. Part of why I don’t mind paying the Apple Tax for sub par devices is the ease of the overall system and most importantly the syncing of device to device and the control of what syncs. Yes other devices have things like this, but not as simple and perfected as Apple for example I have to have a Samsung account for some stuff and a google amount for other stuff and manage them separately.

Hello and sorry for my not so good English.

I had the same problem after updating my iPhone to v. 14.0 and Watch to 7.0.

I solved the problem:

1) un-pair your watch

2) reset your iPhone and delete all data

3) install the last Backup from iCloud

4) pair your watch

now I can start a new Outdoor workout and get the gps route in Apple Health/ Fitness App.

Glad this worked for you and fixed the old maps. My old map routes still hasn't shown up after this but new map routes is showing up. My old maps routes is on strava and Rungap app so I am good if apple cant fix this old map issue. Try to restart your phone to fix the streak and badges issue. A guy form another forum said his badges and streaks were missing but came back after he restarted it.

I am having the same issues with maps and gps since watchOS 7 and iOS 14 updates.

iPhone XS Max and watch S4 gps.

But I am also unable to unlock my MacBook with my watch since the major (and subsequent minor update). I have tried various online suggestions including signing in and out of iCloud and keychain, and have unpaired and paired my various devices.

Any suggestions on how to solve this issue?

Thanks very much.

After reading all of these posts I decided to actually go into my fitness app for the first time in quite awhile and, much to my pleasant surprise, I think all of my daily rowing pieces, walks with my wife and my occasional run were there and they seemed semi-accurate.

GPS does still seem to be much less consistent than it was on my series 5 and I don’t think I upgraded the 5 to the latest software before selling it on CL the day my 6 arrived.

My phone is on ios 14.0.1 and watch s3 is 6.2.8

The steps I did:

1) unpaired the watch

2) backup phone to PC

3) erase all settings

4) restore phone from PC backup

5) pair watch

6) log a walk workout

I'm still not seeing any of my pre-iso 14 maps, I'm only seeing the start point of my post ios 14 workouts,

and it's not showing map data for new workouts. So, none of the fixes work for me.

Looks like the difference is you backed up thru PC. This is one of my questions if backing up thru icloud vs pc backup would have the same result since all posts had everyone going thru icloud. I did the icloud backup and even upgraded to the 50 gb plan to have enough space for my backup. Looks like the restore from PC might be the issue maps are not working on new workouts for you. Or watchOS needs to be 7.01? Has anyone done the restore from pc backup after erase all content and setting successfully?

Sep 29, 2020 4:25 PM in response to WSREP223

It would seem odd that the iCloud and pc backups would be different.

It seems like Apple should be doing the leg work to figure out what is going on instead of people in the forums. Is there any confirmation that Apple is even working on a fix for this problem? Or are they just telling people to reset everything?
