Activity GPS issues after watchOS 7 and iOS 14 updates

This morning I upgraded my iPhone XS Max to iOS 14 and my S4 Watch to watchOS 7. I then went for a run, using the Outdoor Run activity on my Watch as usual, holding my iPhone while I ran (as I was listening to a podcast with AirPods). When I finished, everything was recorded as normal, and I could sync the activity to Strava.

Later, I went for a walk. I used the Outdoor Walk activity on my Watch, but this time didn't take my iPhone. When I returned, and attempted to upload the activity to Strava, I received a warning that no GPS/route data was present. I checked the Fitness and Health apps, and sure enough, there was no route on the map - only the starting point.

I spoke to someone at Apple Support and they suggested I turned off/back on a couple of related privacy settings. I have since tried another Outdoor Walk activity, without the phone present, and the problem persists - no GPS/route data.

My wife also tried the same this evening, after upgrading her iPhone X and S4 Watch too. She had the same results - i.e. with just the Watch, no GPS/route information was saved with the activity.

This seems like a bug to me. Has anyone else experienced the same issue, or has any suggestions as to how to fix it?

It also seemed to me, as if turning wifi off on the phone and watch helped. My theory is that the phone doesnt use GPS on an active workout and thus falls back to locating me via nearby wifi SSIDs. This would also explain the extreme rubberbanding of the position indicated in Apple or Google Maps on the phone while a workout is running on the Watch. But some time ago I was pretty sure that I turned Wifi off and still got really low quality of location tracking on a workout....

I think there is something wrong with the phones location API that doesnt want to go into "full power" GPS tracking during a Watch workout so the watch just receives garbage location data...

The only real 100% working workaround is turning on Airplane Mode on the Watch before workouts so it has to use its internal GPS. This has always lead to perfect tracking for me.

Just finished a discussion with support. They’ve got no idea what is going on. Finally gave them the link to this thread so the can see it’s an issue. Totally ridiculous.

At least two other people have reported speaking to Apple about this. One said that Apple contacted them for data. First line customer service people may not have access to all the current bug reports and investigations.

Since recent updatings: Apple watch 4 (watchOS) 7 is recording the trainings on the watch BUT the iPhone xr (iOS 14) is not presenting ANY new trainings. For instance, today, I got a badge for a training but the training was not recorded on the Fitness app.

Also, the maps from previous Walk trainings have disappeared from the Fitness app. Besides, in the app called ‘Watch’ the new named (at least in Spanish) ‘Fitness’ app does not appear; instead, the former ‘Activity’ (Actividad, in Spanish) app appears. Since there is a lack of synchronization of the trainings between the watch and the phone, this issue may be related to the name of the app...

Apple: any solution??

Yes I’ve experienced the overheating on the phone too. Battery on the phone is also draining faster. I use my iPhone to track my strength workouts and listen to music. Before the iOS 14 update I’d drop from 100% down to around 92%-90% after an hour workout. Today during my workout it went from 100% to 68%. Resting heart rate is also out of whack...it’s jumped 10-15 bpm since the updates to my watch and phone. Something’s not right.

What annoys me more than anything is the mish mash of response from apple. I've spoken to 3 different people on the phone. 2 initially said nah there's no reports.

The first guy said I was the first person to report it - which was a flat out lie.

The 2nd person was as difficult as anything and said there was an issue would provide any information and said "why did i upgrade, I should have waited" then the phone dropped.

The 3rd person was okay, she took ownership of it and immediately identified existing issues and pulled more info.

I've got no response from apple via their twitter support - it's as though they've blocked me or something.

This was a public release and the quality control is appalling... But hey I guess Tim Cook & other management are too busy have stupid activity ring competitions with NBA players to care about the fact they've nuked huge amounts of data.

So, I used health app for 5 minutes today (according to the battery preference meter) and it used 16% of the battery. I can’t help but think this is somehow related to the activity app not showing the data correctly, but maybe not.

iOS14/WatchOS 7 are failures like I’ve never experienced. If the data is lost (4 years of workouts etc) this is bad bad bad. Hope the data has not been deleted but only failure to read it.
