Activity GPS issues after watchOS 7 and iOS 14 updates

This morning I upgraded my iPhone XS Max to iOS 14 and my S4 Watch to watchOS 7. I then went for a run, using the Outdoor Run activity on my Watch as usual, holding my iPhone while I ran (as I was listening to a podcast with AirPods). When I finished, everything was recorded as normal, and I could sync the activity to Strava.

Later, I went for a walk. I used the Outdoor Walk activity on my Watch, but this time didn't take my iPhone. When I returned, and attempted to upload the activity to Strava, I received a warning that no GPS/route data was present. I checked the Fitness and Health apps, and sure enough, there was no route on the map - only the starting point.

I spoke to someone at Apple Support and they suggested I turned off/back on a couple of related privacy settings. I have since tried another Outdoor Walk activity, without the phone present, and the problem persists - no GPS/route data.

My wife also tried the same this evening, after upgrading her iPhone X and S4 Watch too. She had the same results - i.e. with just the Watch, no GPS/route information was saved with the activity.

This seems like a bug to me. Has anyone else experienced the same issue, or has any suggestions as to how to fix it?

I tried restore Back up from computer and that did Not work .Then i tried same but with iCloud and it DID work.It now records maps on my workouts.

All past workouts from before restore have gone ,only a green start point, but at least it does work now so i am happy.

So only advice i can give is don't bother with you computer back up because it does not seem to work for many but iCloud back up seems to be more successful for a lot of people.

I have had the same issue on my Xs max and watch series 4 since updating software on both. Tried many solutions but the one that has actually worked was to restore iPhone to factory settings and use iCloud backup to restore. This of course means pairing your Apple Watch again and re downloading all apps and content to you phone.

I tried many other things first as I didn’t want to have to go down that road but alas finally tried that yesterday and the map from today’s walk has been recorded in the activity app.

This solution worked for me and if you are going to try just make sure you backup your device first.

I ran through this with them last week when their engineering team asked questions - even though I'd done it before as well.

For me if I do this all historical workout route data is gone. This is because I have no point to restore from prior to the bad data existing in Health. So following their instructions doesn't even attempt to restore any workout routes (~5 years of data gone), that entire section is blank after the iCloud restore.

The issue for me is that my iPhone has been backing up to iCloud every day since the upgrade (including the automatic update triggered immediately following the update). Because of this, any chance of restoring the old un-corrupted data back on to the device from iCloud is long gone.

I have same issue with an iPhone 11 with iOS 14.0.1 and Watch S6 with 7.0.1. I noticed the problem in the same way the thread creator noticed, ie Strava informed there was no route information visible.

I have tried to toggle Location Services Off/On, un/repair watch and also after a chat with Apple Support I made hard reset for both iPhone and Watch. But issue still occur.

One strange thing though. If I open Activity app and look at previous recorded workouts, which where tracked with and Watch S2 with watchOS 6, no GPS data is shown. At all. With new recorded workouts a map with a pin at start position is shown. But with previous workouts, no map is shown. And I know for sure there was data before.

So, the problem seems to be either with WatchOS 7 and/or in the Activity app in iOS 14.

Like everyone else here, my workouts and health app are screwy, calorie counts much lower (resting rates when on charger are comically low, often 5 calories in an hour), and while I can view my steps per month, everything past May for distance is gone from a monthly view but you can see the data in a day.

started with iOS 14, and not watch os 7. On an iPhone XS and Apple Watch 5. iOS 13 was problem free since I got my watch in April.

I am only using apple’s activities and not a 3rd party app.

Hello apple users,

Out of despair, I have taken a radical issue to fix the gps issue concerning the apple watch native app we are concerning.

From this feed I have notice that the only workable solution for now is unpairing the watch and resetting the iphone... which I have done except that I have set up as NEW phone. The only valuable data are my photo which I have downloaded to my PC.

Well... I don't mind using my phone as a new phone it provides a fresh start and I had hundreds of apps that I was not using anyway. Did a test and it is working fine.... and hopefully will continue to do so... GPS routes and workout data are syncing except that I lost all my previous GPS route data from my previous workouts.

iPhone X and AW series 5 here both on latest firmware.

It's good they have a solution for some people but the fact it's not fixing it for everyone means I'm not trying it.

A good question to ask Apple would be whether we are actively losing data by not performing the fix now?

I'm OK to keep logging data and not seeing it right now if they can confirm it's really there but a bug means I can't see it.

If on the other hand the situation means I'm losing data I won't ever get back then I'd be forced to try their solution.
