Activity GPS issues after watchOS 7 and iOS 14 updates

This morning I upgraded my iPhone XS Max to iOS 14 and my S4 Watch to watchOS 7. I then went for a run, using the Outdoor Run activity on my Watch as usual, holding my iPhone while I ran (as I was listening to a podcast with AirPods). When I finished, everything was recorded as normal, and I could sync the activity to Strava.

Later, I went for a walk. I used the Outdoor Walk activity on my Watch, but this time didn't take my iPhone. When I returned, and attempted to upload the activity to Strava, I received a warning that no GPS/route data was present. I checked the Fitness and Health apps, and sure enough, there was no route on the map - only the starting point.

I spoke to someone at Apple Support and they suggested I turned off/back on a couple of related privacy settings. I have since tried another Outdoor Walk activity, without the phone present, and the problem persists - no GPS/route data.

My wife also tried the same this evening, after upgrading her iPhone X and S4 Watch too. She had the same results - i.e. with just the Watch, no GPS/route information was saved with the activity.

This seems like a bug to me. Has anyone else experienced the same issue, or has any suggestions as to how to fix it?

It also seemed to me, as if turning wifi off on the phone and watch helped. My theory is that the phone doesnt use GPS on an active workout and thus falls back to locating me via nearby wifi SSIDs. This would also explain the extreme rubberbanding of the position indicated in Apple or Google Maps on the phone while a workout is running on the Watch. But some time ago I was pretty sure that I turned Wifi off and still got really low quality of location tracking on a workout....

I think there is something wrong with the phones location API that doesnt want to go into "full power" GPS tracking during a Watch workout so the watch just receives garbage location data...

The only real 100% working workaround is turning on Airplane Mode on the Watch before workouts so it has to use its internal GPS. This has always lead to perfect tracking for me.

I usually go for a workout which lasts roughly 1hr 30min, my watch just goes down 10%. However I don't need my watch 'Always On' so I have that switched off which means that my watch will only show me my progress if I lift my hand to look at the watch. I used to have it set to 'Always on' and it did make a big difference to battery charge.

The only issue I have is that I don't have the maps, I have the heart rate graph of my workout so I'm lucky in that regard.

I have no intention of going through Apple's advice re wiping phone and watch and setting up both from a backup.

Many have reported following this procedure with mixed results. Some have lost years of workouts which they required for their Doctor so I'm not going down that route.

Apple messed up and should fix it.

For the last few IOS versions they have been very buggy taking nearly a year to sort out.

IOS 13 was just becoming good at version 13.7.

Next year I'm waiting until at least 15.5 before updating, I've take off automatic updates.

Lesson learned, sadly Apple now only concentrating on profit whereas in past it was about have great software, now they are happy to push out any old rubbish copying features I've had on my Android phones for past 10 years. It was a bad day that Steve Jobs RIP left the company, they've lost their way.

Making $billions selling Airpods after getting rid of headphone jack. Next to go will be charging port I have no doubt and they'll have it set up that you will need 'the best ever Apple wireless charger for $200 and lots will buy into it. Sad but true

Couldn't agree more!! This isn't the Apple I have known. And absolutely not the Apple I want to see in the future!

Yes, Apple have lost their way since Steve Job died.

If Steve were alive he'd have sacked all involved in this debacle and wouldn't have launched until it was fixed.

Now it takes nearly a full year after launch for Apple to get rid of the majority of bugs.

They had 10+ years of watching Android Widgets and couldn't even get that right

Now it's big news if they add a few emoji's FFS it's very annoying

Lets hope they sort out this in the near future but I'm not holding my breath

The picture in my mind of the Apple engineers responsible for the fitness app is the complete opposite to the person who actually uses the fitness app and all its features and how it interacts with the Apple Watch, otherwise if they actually had completed some activities they would know they have crippled the app for most uses. A very disappointed Apple customer.

This problem has gone on way too long. This is the time of year many people try to get points from a workplace health app so they can get $$ for their HSA accounts. I can't get my normal points to earn my $$ because my workouts are not recording properly. In addition, I'm trying some new meds for my insomnia and I'd like to get data from Autosleep that I can show my doctor but that is not working either. I have tried everything suggested and all that did was waste my time. Apple, you have failed.
