Activity GPS issues after watchOS 7 and iOS 14 updates

This morning I upgraded my iPhone XS Max to iOS 14 and my S4 Watch to watchOS 7. I then went for a run, using the Outdoor Run activity on my Watch as usual, holding my iPhone while I ran (as I was listening to a podcast with AirPods). When I finished, everything was recorded as normal, and I could sync the activity to Strava.

Later, I went for a walk. I used the Outdoor Walk activity on my Watch, but this time didn't take my iPhone. When I returned, and attempted to upload the activity to Strava, I received a warning that no GPS/route data was present. I checked the Fitness and Health apps, and sure enough, there was no route on the map - only the starting point.

I spoke to someone at Apple Support and they suggested I turned off/back on a couple of related privacy settings. I have since tried another Outdoor Walk activity, without the phone present, and the problem persists - no GPS/route data.

My wife also tried the same this evening, after upgrading her iPhone X and S4 Watch too. She had the same results - i.e. with just the Watch, no GPS/route information was saved with the activity.

This seems like a bug to me. Has anyone else experienced the same issue, or has any suggestions as to how to fix it?

Hi Guys,

yesterday I finally decided to apply the Apple « solution ».

So, now my route workout are well recorded and sync in Fitness App and Health App.

BUT, all the previous route have definitively vanished.

The VO2 Max is no longer recorded since the update to watch OS 7 (21 September), and the un pair / erase / restore / repaired « solution » has no resolved the issue ! 🤬

Many third part app (seven) no longer record and sync with Health App despite the all privacy permission are on.

So in the end the apple ´s solution is partially working but it is far from being satisfying !

The missing route do not matter so much for me cause they are stored in Strava and Training Peaks.

But I do care about the missing function such as VO2 which is no longer recorded. Looks like apple has introduced new stuff such as cleaning hand and oxy, and scr*** up for older functions which was perfectly working before that ***** update

Confirming that performing this erase restore brought back tracking but then lost all of the previously recorded GPS routes (whether viewed in Fitness or when exported - empty gpx files).

I have an apple Watch Series 2 so it is definitely an IOS 14 issue and not a WatchOS 7 as the S2 can't install 7.

The erase restore process is a total pain and not a real fix. I have a trail of banking apps that need me to call the bank to reset because of all the device security.

The upside is that it seems to have taken 6 min off my 5k run time so maybe it helped me focus!

Having the same issue as others are describing. iPhone X with iOS 14 and a brand new Series 6 watch. All historical route data has vanished and all newly recorded workouts only show the start point. Sounds like people are having a variety of positive and negative results from repairing etc. Think It may be worth hanging fire for an update if it’s a known issue.

That would be my advice too. Apple messed up. Not like Apple telling customers to go through an untested procedures.

I was hoping 14.0.1 would have a fix but sadly not.

Fingers crossed it will be sorted in next update that will probably come next week with any luck

In 2021 I'll wait until at least 15.5 before updating going on past performance. Takes Apple best part of 1 year to sort out all the bugs.

Battery life is terrible 😡

I have the same problem on my iPhone XR and Apple Watch Series 3. After upgrading to iOS 14 and watchOS 7 I lost all maps on my workouts and new workouts didn't display a full map (only an empty map with a green starting point dot). I followed the instructions from Apple and reinstalled both my iPhone and Apple Watch. This restored my post-upgrade maps, but all historical maps are still gone.

This data loss is absolutely unacceptable. Hopefully the data is still available somewhere in Apple's data centers and will be restored by Apple asap.

Has anyone noticed that "find my watch" is also not working? I wonder if location services glitch is a part of this bug? From find my iPhone I can play a sound but it can't detect its location and says "No location found".

This is in addition to lost GPS data from workouts both historical and new ones with only the green pin. And rapid battery drain. After following the apple support document to unpair, backup, restore and re-repair, the battery life improved but the GPS data remained as it was, lost and new workouts still only have the green pin. Also the Health app, Walking+Running Distance data for past two years is mostly gone - in the Year view.

I usually go for a workout which lasts roughly 1hr 30min, my watch just goes down 10%. However I don't need my watch 'Always On' so I have that switched off which means that my watch will only show me my progress if I lift my hand to look at the watch. I used to have it set to 'Always on' and it did make a big difference to battery charge.

The only issue I have is that I don't have the maps, I have the heart rate graph of my workout so I'm lucky in that regard.

I have no intention of going through Apple's advice re wiping phone and watch and setting up both from a backup.

Many have reported following this procedure with mixed results. Some have lost years of workouts which they required for their Doctor so I'm not going down that route.

Apple messed up and should fix it.

For the last few IOS versions they have been very buggy taking nearly a year to sort out.

IOS 13 was just becoming good at version 13.7.

Next year I'm waiting until at least 15.5 before updating, I've take off automatic updates.

Lesson learned, sadly Apple now only concentrating on profit whereas in past it was about have great software, now they are happy to push out any old rubbish copying features I've had on my Android phones for past 10 years. It was a bad day that Steve Jobs RIP left the company, they've lost their way.

Making $billions selling Airpods after getting rid of headphone jack. Next to go will be charging port I have no doubt and they'll have it set up that you will need 'the best ever Apple wireless charger for $200 and lots will buy into it. Sad but true
