Activity GPS issues after watchOS 7 and iOS 14 updates

This morning I upgraded my iPhone XS Max to iOS 14 and my S4 Watch to watchOS 7. I then went for a run, using the Outdoor Run activity on my Watch as usual, holding my iPhone while I ran (as I was listening to a podcast with AirPods). When I finished, everything was recorded as normal, and I could sync the activity to Strava.

Later, I went for a walk. I used the Outdoor Walk activity on my Watch, but this time didn't take my iPhone. When I returned, and attempted to upload the activity to Strava, I received a warning that no GPS/route data was present. I checked the Fitness and Health apps, and sure enough, there was no route on the map - only the starting point.

I spoke to someone at Apple Support and they suggested I turned off/back on a couple of related privacy settings. I have since tried another Outdoor Walk activity, without the phone present, and the problem persists - no GPS/route data.

My wife also tried the same this evening, after upgrading her iPhone X and S4 Watch too. She had the same results - i.e. with just the Watch, no GPS/route information was saved with the activity.

This seems like a bug to me. Has anyone else experienced the same issue, or has any suggestions as to how to fix it?

It also seemed to me, as if turning wifi off on the phone and watch helped. My theory is that the phone doesnt use GPS on an active workout and thus falls back to locating me via nearby wifi SSIDs. This would also explain the extreme rubberbanding of the position indicated in Apple or Google Maps on the phone while a workout is running on the Watch. But some time ago I was pretty sure that I turned Wifi off and still got really low quality of location tracking on a workout....

I think there is something wrong with the phones location API that doesnt want to go into "full power" GPS tracking during a Watch workout so the watch just receives garbage location data...

The only real 100% working workaround is turning on Airplane Mode on the Watch before workouts so it has to use its internal GPS. This has always lead to perfect tracking for me.

Can anyone confirm that a backup and restore to icloud after unpairing the watch and the iphone did not work as expected? I followed the support article but backed up and restored to my computer as I don't want to be held hostage buying icloud space I otherwise have no use of and it did not work in restoring lost maps or creating new GPS routes. I'd like a show of hands who tired to follow the article and used icloud and it still failed to fix the issue?

I cant believe Tim Cook doesn't have this issue with his apple watch. He works out everyday at least per his publicly accepted challenge with one of the NBA players. Even if he doesn't run outside he should have had the same issues many folks have with the health summary out of whack with the fitness app, not to mention the missing GPS data, generally erratic response of the watch with ios14. Mine was working flawlessly prior to this buggy ios14. I had the utmost trust in what Apple put out. Massive loss of confidence in apple SW updates and in general with Apple. How can they screw up the basic functionality of the apple watch as a fitness tracker so badly?????

My advice is stay well clear of 14 until it's crystal clear that all the bugs re workouts is sorted out. Going on past performance it may well be nearer to 14.5 than to 14.2 when the total mess that is Fitness app is rubbish.

I read somewhere that Apple were introducing Fitness+ as a monthly subscription so we'll have to pay a monthly fee for something that works,........ sound like Apple ....... headphone jack ........ no charger ....... of course to save the planet.

Cynical? you betcha ..... Apple used to be the gold standard ..... now nearer to rust standard 😡😡😡

So frustrating! Since updating my watch only shows starting point and even doesn’t show my run activities. I need it to show so that I can update to my discovery app to make my goals to get discounts. Very off putting. I’ve tried absolutely everything and ZERO helped. I’ve been a loyal apple user for the past 8 years but this is really ******* me off.

Still no solution after a month, what a disappointment. The whole advertisement campaign for Fitness is about motivating people, what could be worse than making your customers loose all their activity records? This is a HUGE disappointment apple.

Garmin never let me down, and thanks to Garmin connect all the data is saved in the cloud where I CAN ACCESS it. This is such a mess, can't say how disappointed I am.

It doesn’t look like 14.1 has addressed this issue for me either.

Astonishing!

If the issue was created via software, it can be fixed going forward via software. It appears that this just isn’t a priority for Apple.

Going forward it makes sense to not have all of your GPS tracking eggs, or any other health tracking, in the Apple fitness basket.

It has certainly caused me to look elsewhere for my next watch upgrade.
