Activity GPS issues after watchOS 7 and iOS 14 updates

This morning I upgraded my iPhone XS Max to iOS 14 and my S4 Watch to watchOS 7. I then went for a run, using the Outdoor Run activity on my Watch as usual, holding my iPhone while I ran (as I was listening to a podcast with AirPods). When I finished, everything was recorded as normal, and I could sync the activity to Strava.

Later, I went for a walk. I used the Outdoor Walk activity on my Watch, but this time didn't take my iPhone. When I returned, and attempted to upload the activity to Strava, I received a warning that no GPS/route data was present. I checked the Fitness and Health apps, and sure enough, there was no route on the map - only the starting point.

I spoke to someone at Apple Support and they suggested I turned off/back on a couple of related privacy settings. I have since tried another Outdoor Walk activity, without the phone present, and the problem persists - no GPS/route data.

My wife also tried the same this evening, after upgrading her iPhone X and S4 Watch too. She had the same results - i.e. with just the Watch, no GPS/route information was saved with the activity.

This seems like a bug to me. Has anyone else experienced the same issue, or has any suggestions as to how to fix it?

It also seemed to me, as if turning wifi off on the phone and watch helped. My theory is that the phone doesnt use GPS on an active workout and thus falls back to locating me via nearby wifi SSIDs. This would also explain the extreme rubberbanding of the position indicated in Apple or Google Maps on the phone while a workout is running on the Watch. But some time ago I was pretty sure that I turned Wifi off and still got really low quality of location tracking on a workout....

I think there is something wrong with the phones location API that doesnt want to go into "full power" GPS tracking during a Watch workout so the watch just receives garbage location data...

The only real 100% working workaround is turning on Airplane Mode on the Watch before workouts so it has to use its internal GPS. This has always lead to perfect tracking for me.

I did a transfer from my iPhone 11 Pro to my 12 Pro and that didn't fix things. But I didn't do a restore from iCloud. Does anyone know the technical difference between the two?

Also - has anyone tried setting up their phone as a new device? Does that solve the problem? If you do that, do you lose all your Health data? You keep Photos etc. because those are shared over many devices, but Health is only on the phone (and watch), right?

Also - has more than one person had luck with the iOS 14.2 Beta fixing this?

I have tried this twice by backing up to and restoring from a Mac (Finder, as you mention above) and it does not fix the problem. I do not have enough room in iCloud to back up 200+ GB of my phone and I would certainly rather not sign up for more just to use it to fix a bug between Apple's devices. Do you think that Apple's solution absolutely requires you to back up to/restore from iCloud? It seems to me that restoring from a local backup on a Mac, as I have done, would accomplish the same thing.

Final update. Problem has been solved for two weeks now. Bought and now wear the Garmin Fenix 6 Pro for all my activities and works perfectly.

The AW6 was returned, unopened, and my 5 remains now a backup if I fancy a change.

Kinda surprised Apple never asked why I was returning a 1000 pound watch unopened but we are just 78 pages of customers....

Roll on 14.2 and I hope it solves all your/our concerns.

Ps - pic taken with an iPhone 12 Pro - I’m not a total luddite!

You are completely right, what a letdown apple. Especially since the watch wants to be a serious medical device. Its not possible to back up the data ourselves (i never liked this), then they mess it all up with an update.

But still, i have not lost all faith. The data might still be there, just not loading. Maybe the changed something about the way GPS data is saved.

I am hoping there will be others who are still on 13.7 or earlier that upgrade to 14.2 and tell us everything (past runs/walks/rides/data) is there, and that all new exercises are also captured correctly. I’m really worried for those who went to 14.0 and 14.1 that the data still won’t be there after the upgrade to 14.2, but for those on 13.x??? I’m crossing my fingers and waiting to hear.

UPDATE:

Maps only go back to 5th October for some reason, after that for a number of days only a map with start Pin, some earlier than that don't even have a map so not too hopeful for older ones being restored.

At this stage it has had 3 hours to restore maps,

Health app seems to have more accurate numbers now when I checked them against the Steps app.

Prior to the update they were only reporting approx 60% of steps so that at least is a plus for this update.

The jury is out on the issue of the maps, watch this space!!!

I will post again tomorrow if any more maps appear

Hi

In a previous post a user said that they got all their workouts maps back.

I said I only got the ones to 5th October back, ones before that didn't have the routes and many had no map whatsoever.

I have advised anyone on 13.7 stay on it until users report they have got ALL route maps back.

Im glad I went back to MapMyWalk app which always have the maps NOT in Fitness but in its own app. It syncs all details apart from route maps to Fitness though. É.g distance, heart rate etc

Sorry for any confusion 👍
