Activity GPS issues after watchOS 7 and iOS 14 updates

This morning I upgraded my iPhone XS Max to iOS 14 and my S4 Watch to watchOS 7. I then went for a run, using the Outdoor Run activity on my Watch as usual, holding my iPhone while I ran (as I was listening to a podcast with AirPods). When I finished, everything was recorded as normal, and I could sync the activity to Strava.

Later, I went for a walk. I used the Outdoor Walk activity on my Watch, but this time didn't take my iPhone. When I returned, and attempted to upload the activity to Strava, I received a warning that no GPS/route data was present. I checked the Fitness and Health apps, and sure enough, there was no route on the map - only the starting point.

I spoke to someone at Apple Support and they suggested I turned off/back on a couple of related privacy settings. I have since tried another Outdoor Walk activity, without the phone present, and the problem persists - no GPS/route data.

My wife also tried the same this evening, after upgrading her iPhone X and S4 Watch too. She had the same results - i.e. with just the Watch, no GPS/route information was saved with the activity.

This seems like a bug to me. Has anyone else experienced the same issue, or has any suggestions as to how to fix it?

Whoops. Posted too soon.

Just noticed this yesterday when I went to see how many calories I had burned the day before (curious, as it was a big day). Total calories (active+resting) are showing at 1/2 or 2/3 their normal amount.

weird

check the health app, showing very strange averages since I updated my phone. I’m down by more then 50% on calories, walking distance, all my activities.

my rings had been fine the last week but looking closer, the stand columns are wonky and even though the numerals show I’ve done 16/12 hours, there are blanks in them.

here’s a normal day (calorie burn normal at 2600ish):

here’s what it looks like after the update (calorie burn now less then half of normal and stand hour bars are missing):

Missing heart rate information in workouts, just says there isn’t any. GPS data gone as well, only start point shown.

found some threads saying I should unpair/repair my watch from my phone. So I did that. After first try (with a lot of trouble rebooting watch), move/stand/exercise rings are stuck now. Won’t add any calories to exercise ring or an hour to stand ring. Spent better part of the evening unpairing and attempting to repair, took four tries. Rings still atrophied do have now last my 90 day move streak.

heath app info going back a week is wonky, but looking deeper, the year tab shows only two days (but when you first click it, every day is there and after half a second, it only shows two days from May 2020) so sad to say that it looks like the info is there but not?

you can see here where it’s pretty steady for the whole month and the. Drops off a cliff after I update my phone/watch

woke up today and move ring is working and stand ring shows two hours credit. But health app shows I’m a super lazy couch potato apparently

So there’s a lot of issues here. Especially the one where I bought the watch literally just for the fitness aspect, as I’m sure others did as well.

had a call in to Apple and they want me to factory reset my phone so we’ll see what happens if I go that route.

Same issue here — went for a run on the 17th before iOS 14 upgrade and gps route data was recording and passing through to downstream integrations (native and third party like Strava). Upgraded my iPhone XS Max and Apple Watch 5 to their new software on the 17th and getting no route data since then. Really disappointing.

Tried all the soft reset, hard reset, restore from backup tricks and got nowhere.

Also applied the iOS 14.1 and watchOS 7.1 patches to no avail. Please help.

I followed the steps posted in the below post to a T, including restoring it from iCloud and not a computer

the problem is completely gone now, although it does not retroactively fix any of the issues that were ongoing during the issue.

Lost my streaks and some data for about a week, but moving forward, everything looks good. Some data is definitely skewed now though because of the averages taken from bad data.

the restore from iCloud was the easiest restore I’ve ever done though, no issues whatsoever.

I have the same issue with the GPS tracking in Apple Activity app. I only get the start point. And now I can’t see any of my previous maps / routes??

When I go for a run using my Nike app on my watch (leaving the phone at home) I am still getting the GPS route perfectly well. The issue is only with the Apple Activity app. All the other metrics are being recorded except for the route map.

the reason why I don’t use Strava is because I can track all my activities using Apple Activity. I only track runs on Nike as I am in a club, and Apple brings the data across anyway. I’ve avoided joining another app as I want all my activity data in one place.

Am I going to get the old data back?

I have iPhone XS Max updated 14.01 and recently bought Apple Watch series 6 updated 7.01 and had exactly same issue. I tried bike and walked with my phone and without the phone. No different. I exchanged for the new Watch S6 same thing again. I asked the associate if anyone else experienced it she said no ggrr. Do You think is the update cause it or something wrong with my S6?

It’s too frustrating and here too same problem. No GPS data for new and old work outs. Stand goals gone mad. Sync issues between health and activity app. Please Apple have to fix at the earliest as I am already in thought of going to Garmin.

fix fix fix soon.

too many Apple Watch sources why is it? See below

see stand stats below

also No heart rate in activity app although chart available in watch

VO2 max jumped almost from 42 to 46 after the 6K normal outdoor run.

I tried to do an Outdoor Walk workout using the Workout app on the watch. I brought the iPhone with me as usual but turned it off midway into the workout: when watch and phone are used in the workout and both turned on, the GPS mapping is show as grey dots:

I use iPhone X and Apple Watch S4, iOS 14.0.1 and watchOS 7.0.2 and tried checking every setting and everything is turned on...

Also one time using the Apple Maps app on iPhone for directions while driving that the GPS was *very* confused the whole trip, placing the car in the middle of parks, etc.

Final update. Problem has been solved for two weeks now. Bought and now wear the Garmin Fenix 6 Pro for all my activities and works perfectly.

The AW6 was returned, unopened, and my 5 remains now a backup if I fancy a change.

Kinda surprised Apple never asked why I was returning a 1000 pound watch unopened but we are just 78 pages of customers....

Roll on 14.2 and I hope it solves all your/our concerns.

Ps - pic taken with an iPhone 12 Pro - I’m not a total luddite!

Apple Watch S2 now on Watch OS 6.2.9 and iPhone XR now on iOS 14.2 has solved my mapping problems.

All previous maps using the Workout App are sadly gone but for me this is not an issue as I upload from Workout to my Strava account so they are all there anyway. As many other have said they did, while I was waiting for Apple to fix it I used the standalone Strava app (not a fan, it’s sometimes flaky) or on days when I took my phone I’d use Walkmeter Elite for GPS tracks and used the watch to stop and start the run or cycle, as well as gather HR data. Walkmeter Elite also uploads to my Strava account, just a shame that you have to carry your phone with you to use it as it’s a brilliant app for £8 a year.

I’m glad it’s fixed and working properly again to map activities - no more wondering if the Strava app will save my training.

Thought I was done with issues after we got our GPS mapping back, but for the last month I have been plagued by a related issue, more or less like yours. All 4 screenshots have the exact same start and stop location, but the first 25 to 50% of the route is missing !

I get credit for the full distance in the Apple Fitness app, but Strava only acknowledges the part with the GPS data showing 😒

Only longer (+8 km) workouts seems affected.

Any suggestions how to fix it ?

Lars
