Activity GPS issues after watchOS 7 and iOS 14 updates

This morning I upgraded my iPhone XS Max to iOS 14 and my S4 Watch to watchOS 7. I then went for a run, using the Outdoor Run activity on my Watch as usual, holding my iPhone while I ran (as I was listening to a podcast with AirPods). When I finished, everything was recorded as normal, and I could sync the activity to Strava.

Later, I went for a walk. I used the Outdoor Walk activity on my Watch, but this time didn't take my iPhone. When I returned, and attempted to upload the activity to Strava, I received a warning that no GPS/route data was present. I checked the Fitness and Health apps, and sure enough, there was no route on the map - only the starting point.

I spoke to someone at Apple Support and they suggested I turned off/back on a couple of related privacy settings. I have since tried another Outdoor Walk activity, without the phone present, and the problem persists - no GPS/route data.

My wife also tried the same this evening, after upgrading her iPhone X and S4 Watch too. She had the same results - i.e. with just the Watch, no GPS/route information was saved with the activity.

This seems like a bug to me. Has anyone else experienced the same issue, or has any suggestions as to how to fix it?

Going on past experience they release updates on Tuesday or Fridays. Seeing as Tuesday is election day in US it probably won't be released on Tuesday. Hopefully it will be Wednesday or Friday or if not Tuesday next week.

For me it can't come soon enough. The problems with syncing between Watch and iPhone is terrible. How Apple let this drag on for weeks shows they don't really have any interest in Health or Activity.

Funnily enough they are soon going to launch Fitness on their new One, it will cost $29.99 per month for the package including Fitness +. Fitness will then be most probably pared down to force us to stump up the cash.

I use MapMyWalk or MapMyRun for my workouts. It has much more data in it and it's not on iCloud which is a bonus.

I hadn't been using the apps for a couple of years so I was glad that when I went back into the app all my old Workouts from back then were there.

We will probably lose 'legacy workouts' even if the bug fix works.

  1. Won't trust Apple with my workout data in future

Upgraded to iOS 14.2 and WatchOS 7.1 overnight. New problems. Situation is as follows:

  • Outdoor walls/runs have complete map data between 4 Oct 2020 PM and 6 Nov 2020.
  • All map data prior to 4 Oct 2020 'noon' appears to be gone (only starting point displayed). Thank you Apple.
  • Outdoor walk of today has starting point only. Aaaargh.

I have done several outdoor activities on 4 Oct 2020 and so I am pretty certain that map data prior to noon CEST of that day are not available.

At least total calorie calculation appears to be functioning again.

I remain DISAPPOINTED by Apple.

+1 for the same issue with iOS 14.3 and WatchOS 7.1 - the full distance & heart rates are recorded for the whole walk, but the map only starts part/half way along the full route.

  • This issue happens for long walks & hikes, but doesn't happen for long bike rides
  • This only seems to have started around mid-December

Same issues - I started with powering down both phone/watch, moved on to re-pairing, reset all contents and restored from back-up on watch, nothing has worked. I've checked all privacy settings and all location services. I've lost historical route data, and I can see in the Health app where the sources are just missing tons of info. No resolution of problems, which include -

1) Missing route data, as others have said. I have no routes from any prior workouts at all.

2) Missing workouts? Logged 3 walks on Friday, only one shows up as a workout in either the Fitness app or the Health app, though the total steps did log. The real kicker is I earned my '7 workout week' badge the next day, with no workouts even showing up.

3) Bars/counters completely inconsistent between Watch/Fitness app/Health app. 2 stand hours so far today, 2 bars highlighted on watch, no bars highlighted in Fitness app/Health app.

4) Total step counter over the last several days (since update) on Watch vs Health app are completely wrong; Watch shows 30k steps, Health app shows 12k. Extreme sync issues.

5) Don't really care about this, but looking through Health app to find other broken things; resting energy is miscounted since update.

After updating to iOS14 last thursday 17 september my VO2max-registration in the healthapp is missing (as well as the map trasing the running). I was out running 16 km in good speed for one and a half hour both friday 18 sept and sunday 20 sept (yesterday). I am following my VO2max over time and it is important for me to see what shape I’m in, as I’m growing old (69 years) and to beware of corona/covid19. Disappointed and hesitate to by another watch from apple (AppleWath 6 for example) if theese problems continue.

Since recent updatings: Apple watch 4 (watchOS) 7 is recording the trainings on the watch BUT the iPhone xr (iOS 14) is not presenting ANY new trainings. For instance, today, I got a badge for a training but the training was not recorded on the Fitness app.

Also, the maps from previous Walk trainings have disappeared from the Fitness app. Besides, in the app called ‘Watch’ the new named (at least in Spanish) ‘Fitness’ app does not appear; instead, the former ‘Activity’ (Actividad, in Spanish) app appears. Since there is a lack of synchronization of the trainings between the watch and the phone, this issue may be related to the name of the app...

Apple: any solution??

I’ve had a similar issue. When I record a workout on my watch, it gives me credit for the workout through my exercise minutes/calories/move rings in the fitness app on both iPhone and Apple Watch however, the workout itself doesn’t record in the fitness app on my iPhone or in the Health app on iPhone. When I use a third party app for a rowing workout, it records in fitness app on both iPhone, Apple Watch, and Health app. Below Photos show only one workout registered on iPhone Fitness app and health app, but three on Apple Watch fitness app.

After coming across this post via MacRumours, have checked my data. I see no GPS data for any of my logged workouts, walk/run/ride/swim prior to upgrade date. Also noticed there is no heart rate data.

Post upgrade date I get the gps start but no route, also get heart rate.

This is on an iPhone XS and S3 cellular watch. I always walk with my phone and watch, running is normally just the watch.

mice also found that the data in the health app appears to be missing in that I walk almost every day but when I look at the year or month view under “activities” there are large patches of nothing.

I pretty much have the exact same issues with data missing from runs taken with Intervals app and native AppleWatch Workouts app. First states with iOS 14 Public beta update just prior to GM release and hadn’t updated the watch at that stage. If a workout does sync it’s missing GPS and often most if not all HR data. Also significant difference in steps captured with iPhone X missing about 2k streps each day compared to watch. Rings are corrects in Fitness but major issues syncing workouts and daily tracking data.

I had the similar problem then i tried UNPAIR the Apple Watch Series 4 Nike+ from my iPhone X. During the Re-Pairing process, i selected restore from the backup (no worries when and where is the backup because once you selected this option apple watch next screen will show some of backup with timeline, it should have 1 backup copy showing the time when you doing the unpair process, suspect apple watch will always do a full copy backup before it get UNPAIR). Hence, I choose the previous backup copy and let it do the PARING and Restoring process about 20 - 30 min (Yes it take time). Then after successfully rePAIRed the watch. I go outdoor try some RIDE and a RUN. Both now GPS Route is there. Viola! It solve my problem. Another bonus fixed i got after this UNPAIR and REPAIR process is the NRC APP didn't perform auto SYNC from watch NRC run record to iPhone NRC App record. It happened since 3 weeks ago and I had frustrated to manually add back the run record one by one (Lucky i always ON both NRC and Apple Native Run Activity APP) for tracking my run "It is because i donno why APPLE dont want to do Partner Integration with NRC just like GARMIN or Others partner. If I use APPLE WATCH Native RUN Activity, this activity no alternative or method SYNC the run record to NRC, the only option is I had to ON both NRC APP and Native APP to run so that NRC had my record and I can use Apple Native one to SYNC to Strava. This also another problem on NRC and i can't give up this App for my run record and shoes mileage tracking.

In short just try your luck to UN-PAIR and RE-PAIR the watchOS 7 apple watch from your iOS 14 iPhone. It works for me so far. Will keep monitor and try few more outdoor activity to confirm this is the workable temporary solution while waiting APPLE had a patches to fix this.

So latest for me I tried unpairing and restarting all didn’t help. Apple needs to fix this asap in an update cause it’s basically the main reason of owning an Apple Watch.

IPhone XS Max iOS 14 normal public version non beta

Apple Watch series 5 Watch Os 7

now all my health data is messed up as well can’t even access the fitness app this time after unpairing the Watch removing fitness app and repairing. Sigh. Maybe it’s time to switch

health app and fitness either is slow laggy hangs or doesn’t even load

Right now, I have 10 standing hours - the numbers say 10 in both phone and watch, but only 9 columns are lit up in the phone... (Swedish language but the symbols speak for themselves)

Walking exercise this morning is synced to phone, bike activity in the afternoon is not.

Activity circles have started to get out of sync intermittently between phone and watch this afternoon.
