Activity GPS issues after watchOS 7 and iOS 14 updates

This morning I upgraded my iPhone XS Max to iOS 14 and my S4 Watch to watchOS 7. I then went for a run, using the Outdoor Run activity on my Watch as usual, holding my iPhone while I ran (as I was listening to a podcast with AirPods). When I finished, everything was recorded as normal, and I could sync the activity to Strava.

Later, I went for a walk. I used the Outdoor Walk activity on my Watch, but this time didn't take my iPhone. When I returned, and attempted to upload the activity to Strava, I received a warning that no GPS/route data was present. I checked the Fitness and Health apps, and sure enough, there was no route on the map - only the starting point.

I spoke to someone at Apple Support and they suggested I turned off/back on a couple of related privacy settings. I have since tried another Outdoor Walk activity, without the phone present, and the problem persists - no GPS/route data.

My wife also tried the same this evening, after upgrading her iPhone X and S4 Watch too. She had the same results - i.e. with just the Watch, no GPS/route information was saved with the activity.

This seems like a bug to me. Has anyone else experienced the same issue, or has any suggestions as to how to fix it?

It also seemed to me, as if turning wifi off on the phone and watch helped. My theory is that the phone doesnt use GPS on an active workout and thus falls back to locating me via nearby wifi SSIDs. This would also explain the extreme rubberbanding of the position indicated in Apple or Google Maps on the phone while a workout is running on the Watch. But some time ago I was pretty sure that I turned Wifi off and still got really low quality of location tracking on a workout....

I think there is something wrong with the phones location API that doesnt want to go into "full power" GPS tracking during a Watch workout so the watch just receives garbage location data...

The only real 100% working workaround is turning on Airplane Mode on the Watch before workouts so it has to use its internal GPS. This has always lead to perfect tracking for me.

Luckily I hadn’t lost any data on previous workouts from before the WatchOS upgrade. The two ‘faulty’ workouts I did before unpairing are still missing the map data but I can’t see how that will be fixed (and can live with it anyway).

Back in July I did delete a lot of my own data by accident when I deleted some ‘device data’ that I thought was from previous software versions and weren’t needed anymore but turns out they were.

I had the same thing. I took AppleWatch Series 5 and iPhone SE2020 on my run, like I do every workout. It’s like they have completely lost the ability to record GPS and route data since iOS 14 upgrade. Workouts recorded on outdoor run feature on the watch, saved at the end and then imported to Strava....all as usual but then Strava starts telling me no GPS/route data to upload. It’s all a bit odd and very frustrating as I am in the middle of several challenges on Strava and training for a virtual event. I’ve checked settings for everything and all seems to be as it should be. Pleeeeaaasseee, Apple, collaborate with Strava to get it sorted as soon as possible. Thanks.

Just went for an Outdoor Walk without my phone and all data including the GPS route updated fine to the phone once I got home. Battery and everything else in the Fitness app seem OK. It seems that so far the unpairing/re-pairing has worked for me, so definitely worth a try, although it doesn't seem to be working for everyone. Be nice if Apple acknowledged the problem and issued a fix asap.

I have the exact same problem - even the route of my previous workouts display only the starting location. It seems to be a bigger SW problem, since other users are reporting this as well...

I‘ve tried unpairing / re-pairing, resetting / restoring (AW + iPhone) and setting up as new ( AW + iPhone) - nothing seems to work.

I guess we need to wait until Apple fixes this issue with a future SW update.

Same issues - I started with powering down both phone/watch, moved on to re-pairing, reset all contents and restored from back-up on watch, nothing has worked. I've checked all privacy settings and all location services. I've lost historical route data, and I can see in the Health app where the sources are just missing tons of info. No resolution of problems, which include -

1) Missing route data, as others have said. I have no routes from any prior workouts at all.

2) Missing workouts? Logged 3 walks on Friday, only one shows up as a workout in either the Fitness app or the Health app, though the total steps did log. The real kicker is I earned my '7 workout week' badge the next day, with no workouts even showing up.

3) Bars/counters completely inconsistent between Watch/Fitness app/Health app. 2 stand hours so far today, 2 bars highlighted on watch, no bars highlighted in Fitness app/Health app.

4) Total step counter over the last several days (since update) on Watch vs Health app are completely wrong; Watch shows 30k steps, Health app shows 12k. Extreme sync issues.

5) Don't really care about this, but looking through Health app to find other broken things; resting energy is miscounted since update.

Also experiencing this with series 5 and 11 pro max. Along with no route data, workouts are disappearing completely despite rings closing, steps/move calories on the watch both randomly stop counting, resting energy is way off in the health app, nothing is syncing properly or even displaying the same information. Very frustrating as it makes the watch essentially useless as a fitness device at the moment, since nothing is accurate at all.

I have also tried restoring the watch and re-pairing, still having issues. Fingers crossed for a timely fix....

After updating to iOS14 last thursday 17 september my VO2max-registration in the healthapp is missing (as well as the map trasing the running). I was out running 16 km in good speed for one and a half hour both friday 18 sept and sunday 20 sept (yesterday). I am following my VO2max over time and it is important for me to see what shape I’m in, as I’m growing old (69 years) and to beware of corona/covid19. Disappointed and hesitate to by another watch from apple (AppleWath 6 for example) if theese problems continue.
