Activity GPS issues after watchOS 7 and iOS 14 updates

This morning I upgraded my iPhone XS Max to iOS 14 and my S4 Watch to watchOS 7. I then went for a run, using the Outdoor Run activity on my Watch as usual, holding my iPhone while I ran (as I was listening to a podcast with AirPods). When I finished, everything was recorded as normal, and I could sync the activity to Strava.

Later, I went for a walk. I used the Outdoor Walk activity on my Watch, but this time didn't take my iPhone. When I returned, and attempted to upload the activity to Strava, I received a warning that no GPS/route data was present. I checked the Fitness and Health apps, and sure enough, there was no route on the map - only the starting point.

I spoke to someone at Apple Support and they suggested I turned off/back on a couple of related privacy settings. I have since tried another Outdoor Walk activity, without the phone present, and the problem persists - no GPS/route data.

My wife also tried the same this evening, after upgrading her iPhone X and S4 Watch too. She had the same results - i.e. with just the Watch, no GPS/route information was saved with the activity.

This seems like a bug to me. Has anyone else experienced the same issue, or has any suggestions as to how to fix it?

It also seemed to me, as if turning wifi off on the phone and watch helped. My theory is that the phone doesnt use GPS on an active workout and thus falls back to locating me via nearby wifi SSIDs. This would also explain the extreme rubberbanding of the position indicated in Apple or Google Maps on the phone while a workout is running on the Watch. But some time ago I was pretty sure that I turned Wifi off and still got really low quality of location tracking on a workout....

I think there is something wrong with the phones location API that doesnt want to go into "full power" GPS tracking during a Watch workout so the watch just receives garbage location data...

The only real 100% working workaround is turning on Airplane Mode on the Watch before workouts so it has to use its internal GPS. This has always lead to perfect tracking for me.

Same issue as everyone else with Series 4 Watch & iPhone 11 Pro. Upgraded both on Friday and the watch correctly recorded a cycling workout Saturday morning but when I went to sync a walk workout to Strava today I got the 'no GPS' message others have, after which I noticed all map info in the Apple Fitness app workouts has disappeared from the very beginning. Very poor experience and incredibly frustrated with Apple. Also having the iPhone battery drain and hot battery issues. Hope they sort it out soon :(

I have the same issue and more with Apple Watch Series 3. Since upgrade I am just getting the starting point in a map and older data are missing maps altogether, but also workouts going back 3 months or more is not showing Heart Rate data and Average Heart Rate is listed as1... This is happening whether I have my phone with on the workout or not.

On a brighter not, when comparing distances to my Garmin watch (in cycling as well as running and walking, so not using stride length) they are much closer than previous OS versions, which suggests that the GPS is working fine (or better), just not recording or, more likely, not transferring the GPS track.

Yes, exact same issue here! I’m in a steps challenge right now, so this really sucks. I might lose the money I put into the challenge if I can’t get the correct reading for my steps. Apple Watch says I’ve walked 10,561, but my Apple Health app only registers 6,092. I’ve got my steps done for the day and I’m tired. Apple please fix this soon!! 🙏🏻

I’ve had the exact same issue I always use the app which then uploads it to strava and was gutted when I’d noticed I walk and run everyday and love seeing my routes especially getting the local hero(bellend) crown🤣 x I’ve seen on the running groups I’m on it’s an issue so hoping it gets sorted quickly I’m resorting to going old school and using my phone to record to strava.

I also have similar issues. Updated my phone to iOS14 and found that steps were not the same in the phones fitness app and Apple health as they were on my watch. Now since updating my watch os, the fitness app on their has the same issue!

yesterday I did 20k steps according to my watch but Apple health only has 12.5k, seems likes it’s not recording steps done whilst using the workout app on the watch. Also appears the workouts are not being passed to Apple health correctly as a third part app I use to pay for my watch didn’t pick up on the activity. Means I could now be having to pay for my watch despite doing enough activity to avoid this!

there also appears to be more issues in the fitness app where the graphs for move, exercise and stand do not show as expected. The activity I did yesterday does not show on the chart but does show in the summary for minutes exercise and calories burnt!

fore restarts and re-pairing have now effect for me

I too have been having the same issue but conclude it’s related to iOS 14 as was seeing Fitness not syncing most workouts, missing heart rate data, steps and only tracking the origination gps coordinates for the workout but not the route. Had issue since public beta 8 prior to GM. Upgraded Watch OS hoping would correct the issue but didn’t help.

I re-paired AppleWatch with iOS which didn’t improve things.

Also notice considerable lag (like a good minute) syncing workouts when they do actually come across to iPhone.

Really hope this can be fixed as soon as possible.

I know that some folks have reported that Apple is aware - honestly how can’t they be, but when I called yesterday the woman said it’s the first she’d heard of it. Only suggestion was to recalibrate my watch, which #1 isn’t the problem and #2 I won’t do because I’m wrapping up a fitness challenge and will lose all data. Everyone please call and let them know.

Series 5 Watch with SE2020 phone.

Just to let folk know that I found something that has helped - following a tip I read earlier in the thread. In the activity app, the maps in my workouts now seem to be ok (past and present) and Strava is no longer telling me ‘no GPS’ and has imported workouts properly yesterday and today (2 runs and a walk).

Having tried unpairing and repairing unsuccessfully after the faults caused by updating the phone to iOS14 and the Watch to OS7.....I followed the tip to hard reset the Watch by pressing and holding the crown and side button simultaneously. It seemed to have sorted things out and in the Activity App data (inc routes) appears to have been ‘found’ for the workouts that Strava thought there was no data for....so I am now going to attempt to reload those to Strava.

Hope that’s helpful.

I’ve a different problem. My Apple Watch only records outdoor workouts and without heart rate information during workouts. Steps, workouts, activities, heart rate, sleep all have sync issues and the data between my watch and iPhone is way far off. All my streaks are now gone for a toss since the upgrade. Not sure how this was even quality passed and released for an upgrade in the first place

I'm having an issue similar. When out for a run with my cellular Apple Watch only, the run is not synced with my iPhone. When on a walk however it syncs the activity but only drops a pin on the location. My rings seem to move however for both exercise. I've went down the list of unpairing and pairing, location services and so on. Nothing seems to help.
