Activity GPS issues after watchOS 7 and iOS 14 updates

This morning I upgraded my iPhone XS Max to iOS 14 and my S4 Watch to watchOS 7. I then went for a run, using the Outdoor Run activity on my Watch as usual, holding my iPhone while I ran (as I was listening to a podcast with AirPods). When I finished, everything was recorded as normal, and I could sync the activity to Strava.

Later, I went for a walk. I used the Outdoor Walk activity on my Watch, but this time didn't take my iPhone. When I returned, and attempted to upload the activity to Strava, I received a warning that no GPS/route data was present. I checked the Fitness and Health apps, and sure enough, there was no route on the map - only the starting point.

I spoke to someone at Apple Support and they suggested I turned off/back on a couple of related privacy settings. I have since tried another Outdoor Walk activity, without the phone present, and the problem persists - no GPS/route data.

My wife also tried the same this evening, after upgrading her iPhone X and S4 Watch too. She had the same results - i.e. with just the Watch, no GPS/route information was saved with the activity.

This seems like a bug to me. Has anyone else experienced the same issue, or has any suggestions as to how to fix it?

It also seemed to me, as if turning wifi off on the phone and watch helped. My theory is that the phone doesnt use GPS on an active workout and thus falls back to locating me via nearby wifi SSIDs. This would also explain the extreme rubberbanding of the position indicated in Apple or Google Maps on the phone while a workout is running on the Watch. But some time ago I was pretty sure that I turned Wifi off and still got really low quality of location tracking on a workout....

I think there is something wrong with the phones location API that doesnt want to go into "full power" GPS tracking during a Watch workout so the watch just receives garbage location data...

The only real 100% working workaround is turning on Airplane Mode on the Watch before workouts so it has to use its internal GPS. This has always lead to perfect tracking for me.

All - as a follow-up to my initial post, where I had tried -

1) Power off/on both Watch (series 4) and phone (Xs)

2) Airplane mode on/off

3) Check all location/privacy settings

4) Re-pair Watch (twice)

Last night since I had some time I fully reset my phone (all content and settings) and let it restore from the Cloud back-up. Since then, my activity has been tracking correctly in the Activity/Fitness app, and the Health app. It always looked OK on the Watch.

Activity from last Thurs-Sun is still incorrect when comparing Health app to Watch/Fitness app, AND (what I know is a major problem for many people), the routes from ALL historical walks and hikes are missing. There is only the starting point pin. I did complete a walk yesterday evening, and full route info showed as normal.

Hope this might help someone in at least getting new data corrected.

HERE'S WHAT WORKED FOR ME (iPhone 11 Pro Max and AW4 W/ LTE):

-I went to the watch app on my phone and "all watches" in upper left (I have 2 watches paired, one I use just for sleep tracking)

-Clicked the little "i" to the right of the watch I wanted to unpair

-Scrolled down and clicked "unpair"

-Chose to keep cellular plan, when the option popped up

Since I kept them next to each other the whole time while unpairing, once unpaired, the iPhone saw the Apple Watch and asked if I wanted to pair it, which I did, and when I was given the option to pair from a backup/restore, or pair as a new Apple Watch, I selected to pair as a new Apple Watch. I told it to install all apps and I had to set up the watch face and other settings again. It took like 10-15 min. The watch kept WatchOS7 and now correctly maps and logs the GPS.

This morning's run still doesn't have GPS data (I upgraded last night, causing the same prob as everyone else here), other than distance, which was perfectly accurate. I wouldn't be surprised if I never get the route for that run restored. However, I tested a new run and bike ride and both mapped correctly after re-pairing.

I am having this issue but also my runs and sometimes walks doesn’t show as a workout in the fitness app (old activity app) in my iphone.

However, calories and minutes of exercise does count towards my rings but I can’t see the summary of my runs like splits and segments on my iphone while they do show up in my watch.

As others hace reported, when they do appear in my iphone there is no gps data other than starting point.

I unpaired and paired my watch but still having the same issues, very frustrating, hoping there is a fix VERY soon

Same issue here. XS Max on iOS14 and series 5 on watchOS 7. Not only does my watch no longer track GPS data but ALL my routes are gone from the past few years and are no longer visible in the workouts/health app. I’ve unpaired and repaired the watch, reset fitness calibration, toggled privacy settings, the whole shebang. Definitely a VERY frustrating bug in iOS 14/watchOS 7 that I hope apple fixes ASAP. Quite disappointed this somehow made it through into the public release.

I am also experiencing the same issues ever since I upgraded to iOS 14 and WatchOS 7 about 2 days back. While the watch is calculating the correct data, but upon syncing my watch to the iPhone XS, i am noticing the following issues:

  • walking+running distance shown in the Health App (Health -> Activity) is off by a couple of miles for each activity (e.g. outdoor or indoor walk)
  • Total steps calculated is also less for each activity. My watch shows around 18000 steps as of now, but after syncing it, the iPhone shows about 12700 steps
  • The active energy, resting energy, exercise minutes are all showing the incorrect values in the phone after syncing
  • VO2 max is either no longer calculated or it is being calculated wrongly ever since I upgraded to iOS 14 and WatchOS 7
  • During a walk or any activity, not all heart rates are being retreived. The watch does not show the heart rate for each minute like it used to earlier, and that data is also missing in the phone upon syncing. Same goes for the usual heart rate monitoring when i am inside the house and not doing any exercise. None of that data pertaining to the heart rate is being stored by the watch.
  • My activity related data from all the previous months is also missing in the phone in the Health app.

I tried unparing the watch and pairing it again, but no luck. Seems like others are also facing similar issues. I hope Apple fixes them in the next update. This should be fixed as soon as possible.

I’ve had a similar issue. When I record a workout on my watch, it gives me credit for the workout through my exercise minutes/calories/move rings in the fitness app on both iPhone and Apple Watch however, the workout itself doesn’t record in the fitness app on my iPhone or in the Health app on iPhone. When I use a third party app for a rowing workout, it records in fitness app on both iPhone, Apple Watch, and Health app. Below Photos show only one workout registered on iPhone Fitness app and health app, but three on Apple Watch fitness app.

Feeling like it’s a ios14 issue since all the health data seems to be missing from the health app. Asked at the Apple store today and they hadn’t heard of this issue. They did find this thread but didn’t have any input. I’m also missing 3 months of data and now my runs won’t import into Strava - just says missing data. It has to be there because my runs are accurate in watch and have elevation and other stats that need GPS. Seems like the GPS data doesn’t get saved in iOS 14. Really frustrating.

Having the same issue.

Noticed when I transferred my activities to Strava that tracking data was not present.

WatchOS 7 (AW Series 3 GSM) and iOS 14 (iPhone11 Pro Max).

All my previous Activities still contain the tracking map.

Issue occurs with and without my phone present during the activity.

The new activities have a correct distance, which agree with other runs/walks I have made over the same track. Watch also beeps at me when reaching KM milestones, so the Watch seems to be tracking distance OK.

Please fix!

I'm using Apple Watch Series 4 Nike+ version and with iPhone X. Both running latest OS version which is iOS14 and watchOS 7

I have the same problem also. It happen to me when i did an hour Cycling following by 30 min running. Both GPS Map also stay at starting point and there is no GPS Route Map. Any alternative to fix this while waiting the patches from APPLE? Because the 40th RACE is on this coming 4th OCTOBER London Virtual Marathon. I need to submit the virtual run result with the GPS Route Map on my workout/activities. Need to sync to STRAVA and need to show at NRC also.
