Activity GPS issues after watchOS 7 and iOS 14 updates

This morning I upgraded my iPhone XS Max to iOS 14 and my S4 Watch to watchOS 7. I then went for a run, using the Outdoor Run activity on my Watch as usual, holding my iPhone while I ran (as I was listening to a podcast with AirPods). When I finished, everything was recorded as normal, and I could sync the activity to Strava.

Later, I went for a walk. I used the Outdoor Walk activity on my Watch, but this time didn't take my iPhone. When I returned, and attempted to upload the activity to Strava, I received a warning that no GPS/route data was present. I checked the Fitness and Health apps, and sure enough, there was no route on the map - only the starting point.

I spoke to someone at Apple Support and they suggested I turned off/back on a couple of related privacy settings. I have since tried another Outdoor Walk activity, without the phone present, and the problem persists - no GPS/route data.

My wife also tried the same this evening, after upgrading her iPhone X and S4 Watch too. She had the same results - i.e. with just the Watch, no GPS/route information was saved with the activity.

This seems like a bug to me. Has anyone else experienced the same issue, or has any suggestions as to how to fix it?

It also seemed to me, as if turning wifi off on the phone and watch helped. My theory is that the phone doesnt use GPS on an active workout and thus falls back to locating me via nearby wifi SSIDs. This would also explain the extreme rubberbanding of the position indicated in Apple or Google Maps on the phone while a workout is running on the Watch. But some time ago I was pretty sure that I turned Wifi off and still got really low quality of location tracking on a workout....

I think there is something wrong with the phones location API that doesnt want to go into "full power" GPS tracking during a Watch workout so the watch just receives garbage location data...

The only real 100% working workaround is turning on Airplane Mode on the Watch before workouts so it has to use its internal GPS. This has always lead to perfect tracking for me.

Since I updated to iOS 14 on my iPhone11 and WatchOS 7 on my S4 with cellular, something even weirder is going on. The first outdoor run which I did 4 days ago after the update had recorded all activity correctly (HR, calories & all) but as you all said no route information (GPS missing). When I went back home and tried to sync with Strava, noticed that it is showing that the route info is missing and in distance wise, it was showing only 2.4miles even though I ran 6.1miles. Then I went to health app & noticed that within Health app, the walking + running distance activity was showing that same 2.4 mile even though within the same Health app, the workout section was showing full 6.1mile. When I go to Activity app, it showed the full 6.1mile distance but saying no HR chart available as didn't get enough data even though the avg HR is showing correctly with what I saw on my watch after finishing the run.

After this the next day, I did a strength training with the watch and this time no data showing up either in Activity app or in Health app though today's activity showing correct exercise time & calories burnt in the 3 ring sections at the top. Same thing happened again today, when I did the run and every thing showing correctly and recorded in the watch but both the Activity app and the Health app not showing any of that run. In between, I'd unpaired & re-paired my watch yesterday and did that again today. But this problem is still there.

Reading the thread, it seems it's a known issue to Apple and they are trying to fix it. I guess I need to wait for the fix to come. It really sucks. Please let me know if anyone else has similar issue?

I actually have two issues... since WatchOS 7, my new activities are no longer being tracked by GPS (only the starting point is there on the map)

AND

my WatchOS 6 GPS tracks have disappeared (the map is not displaying at all for all my old workouts)

  • iPhone 11 Pro and Apple Watch Series 3

  • unpaired and re-paired my watch (with a restore) => same result
  • I upgraded to the public beta of WatchOS 7.1 and iOS 7.2 to see if that helped => same result
  • Battery life (which is also a disaster on 7.0) is greatly improved with the beta versions though

Same for me with the update to my Apple Watch 4 and iPhone 11 Pro. All GPS data is gone on plus the Fitness app does not show outdoor walks or indoor cycling anymore even if the watch does record those workouts. It only appears to record my indoor runs on the treadmill at this time. Don’t want to re-pair my watch until this is figured out at Apple.

Same issue here. iPhone 11 pro & series 4 watch. I updated my phone Saturday and noticed issues with my heart rate (said chart unavailable) & gps only showing starting location, so I updated the watch on Sunday thinking it was a compatibility issue. Since then I've spent three days trying to figure out what is wrong--including 2 hours of chatting with Apple support yesterday and they acted like they had never heard of this issue. Super frustrating. I'm glad I found this thread-I've been going crazy un-pairing, re-pairing, updating settings, setting up the watch as new. I tried it all. Hopefully the software update with a fix for this bug will be released soon.

I followed these steps :

  1. Unpaired the Watch from iPhone
  2. Erased iPhone (make sure all your data, including Health data is backed up first)
  3. Restored from Backup (iPhone)
  4. Restored from Backup (Watch)

After restoring the iphone and watch all my previous activities from the past year had vanished but after trying the walking exercise it is now tracking the GPS correctly again.

This has to be on Apple's end because my other apps seem to be tracking my calories burned plus total burned. Also I have missing data!! Its showing my data from 2019 (which is wrong either way) saying I only burned 500 as a total that day. Please update us Apple!! It's so frustrating that they haven't even replied or given a statement on the issue just because only a few users have spoken out. Please fix this!

I pretty much have the exact same issues with data missing from runs taken with Intervals app and native AppleWatch Workouts app. First states with iOS 14 Public beta update just prior to GM release and hadn’t updated the watch at that stage. If a workout does sync it’s missing GPS and often most if not all HR data. Also significant difference in steps captured with iPhone X missing about 2k streps each day compared to watch. Rings are corrects in Fitness but major issues syncing workouts and daily tracking data.
