Activity GPS issues after watchOS 7 and iOS 14 updates

This morning I upgraded my iPhone XS Max to iOS 14 and my S4 Watch to watchOS 7. I then went for a run, using the Outdoor Run activity on my Watch as usual, holding my iPhone while I ran (as I was listening to a podcast with AirPods). When I finished, everything was recorded as normal, and I could sync the activity to Strava.

Later, I went for a walk. I used the Outdoor Walk activity on my Watch, but this time didn't take my iPhone. When I returned, and attempted to upload the activity to Strava, I received a warning that no GPS/route data was present. I checked the Fitness and Health apps, and sure enough, there was no route on the map - only the starting point.

I spoke to someone at Apple Support and they suggested I turned off/back on a couple of related privacy settings. I have since tried another Outdoor Walk activity, without the phone present, and the problem persists - no GPS/route data.

My wife also tried the same this evening, after upgrading her iPhone X and S4 Watch too. She had the same results - i.e. with just the Watch, no GPS/route information was saved with the activity.

This seems like a bug to me. Has anyone else experienced the same issue, or has any suggestions as to how to fix it?

It also seemed to me, as if turning wifi off on the phone and watch helped. My theory is that the phone doesnt use GPS on an active workout and thus falls back to locating me via nearby wifi SSIDs. This would also explain the extreme rubberbanding of the position indicated in Apple or Google Maps on the phone while a workout is running on the Watch. But some time ago I was pretty sure that I turned Wifi off and still got really low quality of location tracking on a workout....

I think there is something wrong with the phones location API that doesnt want to go into "full power" GPS tracking during a Watch workout so the watch just receives garbage location data...

The only real 100% working workaround is turning on Airplane Mode on the Watch before workouts so it has to use its internal GPS. This has always lead to perfect tracking for me.

My Watch has been doing crazy health tracking related stuff since the update right before OS7, and has only gotten worse since. my running GPS has been all over the place too, ran 2mi and it says I only did .75mi

Day one on OS7 I had 1800 calories burned, and 147 min of exercise stand at 16/12 at 9AM after having done nothing, but take watch off charger at 7:30 and drive to work. later at 10:30pm its still showing the same data just with more the lines filled in.....

1. Resolution: I too had this problem. The resolution was not ideal but it worked for me. With Apple Support assistance:

Unpaired the Watch from iPhone
2. Erased iPhone (make sure all your data, including Health data is backed up first)
3. Restored from Backup (iPhone)
4. Restored from Backup (Watch)

As a result, I was able to get my GPS data reporting correctly in Fitness app

This fixed it for me, and I had tried everything else prior to this. The only data missing is rides I did while it was messed up. Everything else is now back on the iPhone and it tracked my ride this evening.

Thanks for your post. I have heard this solution a few times and last thing I haven’t tried. If I’m incredibly desperate that will be my next step, but as good a workaround as that maybe Apple can’t expect everyone with this issue to be restoring their iPhones (has its own set of risks). Definitely need to fix the issue with iOS 14.

I have also had the same issue. I had the S4 and X. tried to unpair it multiple times as well as talk to apple. I got the S6 this weekend and still no luck. I have walked every day (outdoors). There are a couple days where I would see my post workout summary on my watch but I would not get it on my phone. Now I'm having the issue of not seeing my route.

This seems to be the solution - it worked for me! Just went and did a short outdoor walk and the gps tracked properly :)

All workouts prior to the iOS 14 update are back but as somebody else already pointed out - any gps-related workouts that I tracked with the glitch between when I first downloaded iOS 14 a week ago until today when I erased and restored everything are still wrecked...they don’t show any tracked gps routes, so I’ve lost about a week’s worth. Quite the nuclear option as it took a couple of hours to restore all my apps/photos/music but I’m glad things seem to be working. Curious to see if battery life goes back to normal on my iPhone again. Fingers crossed.

The previous suggest to:

  • unpair watch (backs up watch to phone and resets/erases watch)
  • backup phone to mac
  • erase/reset phone
  • restore phone
  • repair watch from backup

Did NOT work. All routes are still lost (including all routes etc. prior to upgrade to ios14/watch os 7.

Basically, the restore put me back exactly where I was. Everything that was broken is still broken. I don't think I lost anything except a lot of time. Maybe your "mileage" will vary, but I can say that it did absolutely nothing to fix the problem for me.

I have exactly the same problem - no route information or GPS data even though I have tried everything suggested in this page and more, including toggling all privacy settings on the myriad of different apps and settings and a full system reset which still did not work. Has anyone so far managed to solve this?

Kind of losing hope. Is this a specific problem to Series 3 watches? Is this a product of the older versions no longer being supported?

For me it has also removed all of the previous GPS data from every workout I have ever logged on the system.

Not isolated to S3, it is happening on my S4 watch too.

I have so far un-paired & re-paired the watch from backup; then un-paired and set up as "new watch", no difference.

Don't have the patience nor time to also reset the phone, so I guess I'll be waiting for a fix from Apple.

As long as my exercise activities contribute to the circles (which they do, so far) I can wait for a fix.

Exactly the same problem here. There seems to be a mismatch between data (steps, etc) recorded on the watch and showing in the Health app & the Fitness app - it’s all over the place. It will soon start to cost me money since I get my watch paid for through health insurance, provided I record workouts - this isn’t happening at the minute.

So latest for me I tried unpairing and restarting all didn’t help. Apple needs to fix this asap in an update cause it’s basically the main reason of owning an Apple Watch.

IPhone XS Max iOS 14 normal public version non beta

Apple Watch series 5 Watch Os 7

now all my health data is messed up as well can’t even access the fitness app this time after unpairing the Watch removing fitness app and repairing. Sigh. Maybe it’s time to switch

health app and fitness either is slow laggy hangs or doesn’t even load

Last night I took the risk and unpaired the watch, erased it (but saved the cellular plan) and reinstalled. As of now every app that failed is working..Strava loads (Haven t tried the GPS function), Fitness now recording activity, UA Map My Ride loads and launches as do a few other apps that weren’t working such as the Heart Rate. Was a pain. Most things reloaded from backup but had to put CVC codes for the cards in Apple Wallet one by one. We’ll see if this sticks.
