Activity GPS issues after watchOS 7 and iOS 14 updates

This morning I upgraded my iPhone XS Max to iOS 14 and my S4 Watch to watchOS 7. I then went for a run, using the Outdoor Run activity on my Watch as usual, holding my iPhone while I ran (as I was listening to a podcast with AirPods). When I finished, everything was recorded as normal, and I could sync the activity to Strava.

Later, I went for a walk. I used the Outdoor Walk activity on my Watch, but this time didn't take my iPhone. When I returned, and attempted to upload the activity to Strava, I received a warning that no GPS/route data was present. I checked the Fitness and Health apps, and sure enough, there was no route on the map - only the starting point.

I spoke to someone at Apple Support and they suggested I turned off/back on a couple of related privacy settings. I have since tried another Outdoor Walk activity, without the phone present, and the problem persists - no GPS/route data.

My wife also tried the same this evening, after upgrading her iPhone X and S4 Watch too. She had the same results - i.e. with just the Watch, no GPS/route information was saved with the activity.

This seems like a bug to me. Has anyone else experienced the same issue, or has any suggestions as to how to fix it?

It also seemed to me, as if turning wifi off on the phone and watch helped. My theory is that the phone doesnt use GPS on an active workout and thus falls back to locating me via nearby wifi SSIDs. This would also explain the extreme rubberbanding of the position indicated in Apple or Google Maps on the phone while a workout is running on the Watch. But some time ago I was pretty sure that I turned Wifi off and still got really low quality of location tracking on a workout....

I think there is something wrong with the phones location API that doesnt want to go into "full power" GPS tracking during a Watch workout so the watch just receives garbage location data...

The only real 100% working workaround is turning on Airplane Mode on the Watch before workouts so it has to use its internal GPS. This has always lead to perfect tracking for me.

Just noticed this yesterday when I went to see how many calories I had burned the day before (curious, as it was a big day). Total calories (active+resting) are showing at 1/2 or 2/3 their normal amount.

weird

check the health app, showing very strange averages since I updated my phone. I’m down by more then 50% on calories, walking distance, all my activities.

my rings had been fine the last week but looking closer, the stand columns are wonky and even though the numerals show I’ve done 16/12 hours, there are blanks in them.

Right now, I have 10 standing hours - the numbers say 10 in both phone and watch, but only 9 columns are lit up in the phone... (Swedish language but the symbols speak for themselves)

Walking exercise this morning is synced to phone, bike activity in the afternoon is not.

Activity circles have started to get out of sync intermittently between phone and watch this afternoon.

here’s a normal day (calorie burn normal at 2600ish):

here’s what it looks like after the update (calorie burn now less then half of normal and stand hour bars are missing):

Missing heart rate information in workouts, just says there isn’t any. GPS data gone as well, only start point shown.

found some threads saying I should unpair/repair my watch from my phone. So I did that. After first try (with a lot of trouble rebooting watch), move/stand/exercise rings are stuck now. Won’t add any calories to exercise ring or an hour to stand ring. Spent better part of the evening unpairing and attempting to repair, took four tries. Rings still atrophied do have now last my 90 day move streak.

heath app info going back a week is wonky, but looking deeper, the year tab shows only two days (but when you first click it, every day is there and after half a second, it only shows two days from May 2020) so sad to say that it looks like the info is there but not?

you can see here where it’s pretty steady for the whole month and the. Drops off a cliff after I update my phone/watch

woke up today and move ring is working and stand ring shows two hours credit. But health app shows I’m a super lazy couch potato apparently

So there’s a lot of issues here. Especially the one where I bought the watch literally just for the fitness aspect, as I’m sure others did as well.

had a call in to Apple and they want me to factory reset my phone so we’ll see what happens if I go that route.

tried the un pair, restore and re-pair (just watch). Activities using “outdoor walk” now don’t show up at all. Guess that fixed the breadcrumb gps problem because I can’t see anything now. All the minutes, calories still show up in the circles and the watch shows the activity summary, but now doesn’t go to phone. On the plus side I think my battery life may have improved, the rate of discharge seems lower.

Im done doing beta testing for Apple, waiting for the fix if it comes. I can still use Nike

Tim Cook: “If you zoom out into the future, and you look back, and you ask the question: 'What was Apple's greatest contribution to mankind?', it will be about health," he said. "We're democratizing it. We're taking what has been with the institutions and empowering the individual to manage their health."

iOS 14 and Watch OS 7: “oh yeah? Check this out.” 🤦

Same issue here - Apple Watch 5 SS Cell and iPhone X - Both on the latest software. Have reported in the Apple Feedback app, let's see.

Happens for me for any activity - running, walking, cycling. Tried ALL the fixes, from the un-pair and re-pair to many reboots. Battery life also ***** after an activity too - hitting 10% around 7PM.

Fix so far has been to use the Strava app on the watch instead - it's a pain as this does not have an always on screen, meaning a wrist lift when cycling. I cant also see my avg speed on Strava either. Bonus - at least the Strava app has auto pause when biking - something simple Apple needs to add 💁🏻‍♂️

Looking about 7.1 is some way off and does not seem to include any word on this fix, so, hey ho. Strava for now.

Fixed.

After spending 2 hours with apple support. I managed to get my issue resolved. I first didn't think it would work as I had tried everything from playing around with privacy and location services to unpairing and repairing multiple times. This surprisingly fixed it for me.

Warning: This was a 2 hour process involving resetting your watch AND your phone. This will not help with showing the route for old activities but will fix for any activities going forward.

1- Make sure your phone is fully backed up on iCloud Settings -> Click on your Apple ID -> iCloud Backup -> Backup Now

2- Unpair your apple watch. Watch app -> All Watches -> Click on your Watch unpair

3- Reset your iPhone : Settings -> General -> Reset - > Erase All Content and Settings.

4- Once your phone is reset, restore it phone from iCloud back-up

5- Once restore process is completed, Pair your phone with apple watch again

6- Get out and start an activity for 10-15 minutes. You should see the route properly recorded.

Just in case anyone hasn't already, it would be super useful to Apple if developers experiencing these issues can capture some debugging logs by following the instructions here:

https://download.developer.apple.com/iOS/iOS_Logs/HealthKit_Logging_Instructions.pdf

https://download.developer.apple.com/iOS/watchOS_Logs/HealthKit_Logging_Instructions__Watch.pdf

and attaching the resulting logs to a bug report here : https://feedbackassistant.apple.com

I have the same issue, all GPS recordings since the upgrade to iOS7 (Watch) and iOS14 (iPhone 11) are lost. Strava would not find them neither.

But today I recorded my workout with Strava and the GPS worked fine. So the issue is not Strava but a bug in the upgrade of Watch iOS and/or iPhone.

Tried to un-pair and pair again but it does not work.
