watchOS 7 Battery Drain
I updated my series 4 Apple Watch to WatchOS 7 today. I use my watch all day and usually have about 30% battery left when I go to bed and start changing. Today my phone got to 10% by 2:30 pm! Why is this drawing so quickly?

POSSIBLE SOLUTION:
I posted yesterday to say that I had unpaired and then set the watch up as a new watch and that it seemed better.
ive now had the watch on from the charger at 7am and at 3pm I’m still on 77% which is much more like normal.
it’s a pain in the *** to have to set up watch faces etc. again, but it does seem to have worked
Same for me (AW4) - I unpaired then setup as a new watch; have optimised apps, updates, notifications etc and today battery usage seems to be back to normal with a normal day of music, notifications, workout etc
Or maybe it just needed time to settle, reindex or whatever after the update - if so not impressed!
I’m relived but it sucks to have to do this for an upgrade that doesn’t hold
much benefit for older models of AW!
Same issue here. I have an Apple Watch Series 4 and with watchOS 6 it usually had 40-50% depending on the watchface at the end of the day and now it can’t stand the full day at all. Hope they release and update soon
Just wanted to let you know that the very basic un-pair and direct re-pair (with the backup that gets created when un-pairing) did the trick or me.
I un-/re-paired my watch Sunday afternoon. That took quite a while and gave me a watch equivalent of the beachball of death and some messages about low battery (even though I started unpairing in excess of 50%). The backup worked just fine and all the settings / watch faces etc. were as before. So, no hassle there.
At 11pm I charged the watch to 100% and went to bed with sleep tracking on. In the morning at 7am it still showed 92% and right now after normal usage, notification etc. (no hand washing app, though) including two bicycle workouts of one hour each (with music) the battery still shows 35%. So far so good.
Unfortunately, after unpair/re-pair using the backup made at unpair, my AW4 battery drain returned to near "normal" but would not reconnect in System Preferences to Auto-Unlock my Mac Pro (Late 2013). I followed your steps #1-11 but at #12 my AW4 still wouldn't reconnect in System Preferences. I tried to connect several times and also re-booted my Mac Pro and tried again several times--No joy. I fear I may have to unpair and re-pair as a new watch instead of using the backup.
Called Apple support and they ran a diagnostics test and my series 4 is healthy...in fact the battery lasted up to 2 days last week. It went down to 34% in about 3 1/2 hours this morning. Hope they fix this soon...they already have short battery life compared to other smart watches but this is a joke.
Just upgraded my Apple Watch series 7 to iOS 7 the battery drained like crazy less than 8 hrs all empty.
I read a lot of people having the same issue! What’s the solution? Is Apple doing something about it!
Unpairing and re-pairing seems to have solved my problem. I just did it and restored for my watch backup.
I first tried turning off some of the new features which provided little improvement. I only did this yesterday so i need to spend a day or two to confirm this is permanent but so far much better battery life.
Unpair and re-repair from backup seems to have helped the battery life on my Series 4. Also my activity maps are back after this - before I just had the starting location pin. Tomorrow will be a better test of the battery but it isn’t draining as fast as it was.
Same...Series 5 and start with a 100% charge at 7:00 am and by 11:30 am its at 50%, with one workout. By evening, the last 3 days, it drains and powers off before I go to bed! Need a fix asap, do disappointed with yet again more watch problems with updates
I had the same issue for the last few days. I solved it though!
what I did was I made sure my watch was backed up, then unpaired my watch from my iPhone.
then I paired it again and restored from back up rather than set up as new. It took a little while to complete the process but it has put my battery back to lasting me all day and ending the day on about 40%
I am having the same issue and the watch will drain about 50% during a workout. I think the new software is assuming the new processor and is draining the older watches. My fear is that this update is going to force people to upgrade to the new watch and needs to be addressed.
Same here! I have the cellular series 5 watch and never had to worry about battery life. I get up at 6am, put my watch on, work out, and wear the watch until about 9pm and it was previously 50%. Now after the update.. I wake up at 6, wear my watch, and it’s almost dead by 5pm. This is ridiculous.
As soon as I installed Watch OS 7, my Apple Watch battery life dropped to less than 1/2. I even turned off the wake screen, removed some apps and still no improvement. Early this morning, I used the workout app for an hour and a half walk and the battery was down to 63% when I finished. Clearly it has something to do with the new OS, not the way I’m using my watch, which hasn’t changed much since I purchased it two years ago.
The pairing and unpairing did not seem to work for me but the very simple method of powering off the iPhone, then the Watch, wait a short time, say 5 minutes, then boot up the iPhone and once done switch on the Watch. The problem went after that. Perhaps the pairing process done early may have had something to do with it. However, I believe even if left alone the processes of upgrading behind the scenes eventually finish and all is back to normal. We should not though have to suffer this.
I was at 100% at 05:30 this morning, it is now approaching 22:00. I am on 38%. I have used the watch all day. Used when swimming (1,000 meters) this morning and this afternoon out for a 3 mile walk.
