Notifications coming through car (Bluetooth) even though they're turned off

Likely after a recent update, when my iPhone 8 connects to my car via Bluetooth all the notifications now come through the car. I went into Settings > Bluetooth > Sync (my car), and notifications are turned OFF already and yet they still come through the car. This wouldn't be so bad if I had a newer vehicle, but mine is older so all notifications (such as map directions) come through the car seemingly as a phone call, which turns off the radio for ~5s before it dings, and then ~5-10s after the ding is complete. This is very annoying and disruptive.

Note: I DO NOT want to turn off bluetooth or disconnect my device at all. I rely on it for handsfree calls and directions. All I want is for the notifications (which are already turned off in settings) to stop coming through as well.

This is a new issue for me, it started last week. Before this (for the last ~6 years) notifications did not come through the car.

Potentially unrelated, but I've also noticed that my directions are not working correctly either. It will turn off the radio, initiate the "call", and then sometimes it speaks like it should, but sometimes it's just silence instead of telling me the next direction (i.e. "Turn right in 1 mile").

Thoughts?
