WatchOS7 update problems

My series 3 completed an auto update overnight to Watch OS7. Today it has shut itself down at least 3 times, locked itself while on my wrist about 4 times, failed to load complications on multiple faces (weather, activity rings, date etc), disconnected from my phone at least twice. It has also dropped to less than 50% battery in about 8 hours, normally it is still in the 80’s. Is anyone else having these issues? This has been the buggiest upgrade I have seen.

Hi everyone, I just dropped off my MacBook Pro for warranty service and asked the "Genius" who was helping me about the

Watch OS7 7.01 Software Problem.... He actually acknowledged the issue and said they were working on a fix for the next Software update release....

This morning, before leaving my house, I turned off the WiFi on my Watch 3. I was in a church I'd not been to before, then out to eat, and also made a trip to the grocery store. My watch functioned perfectly all morning, and so far this afternoon. I used the Stocard app and Apple Pay at the grocery store, all without a problem.

It never locked on my wrist nor rebooted. The weather info updated correctly as I was changing city locations. I've not turned the WiFi back on.

I contacted support via online chat..

they ran a diagnostic on my watch and couldn't find any issues.

But they did say:

"Well yes, checking my resources I found this issue is kind of common. Apple Support Advisors carefully log all reported issues to ensure that product trends get the attention they deserve. Apple tests its products before shipment, but when issues do emerge, Apple works quickly to resolve them. So in this case you can use the watch normally, but the restarts will keep happening until Apple can fix the issue, ok?"

I hate to trample enthusiasm, but I put the 7.0.3 beta on my watch on Thursday and continued to have issues. On Friday I reset the watch to factory and set up as a new watch. I kept the default face which, for me, is the Nike activity face with three complications.

I had stability, with no reboots or Apple screens, from Friday afternoon until Sunday afternoon. It was beautiful. That also happened to be when I was in the woods, with zero cell signal and no Wifi.

When I returned to civilization/mobile signal, the reboots started again. Not as severe as they had been, and the number of reboots/day is way down... but the watch is still not 100% stable.

Updated mine to 7.03 which didn't take half as longs as 7.01 and didn't need unpairing because of lack of storage - so just like a normal update. No reboots as yet, heart rate works and I can add my cards back into wallet. Fingers crossed they've cracked it now - the whole 7.01 experience was flawed rom the beginning.

No issues after update, so far. I've been following this thread for weeks, since the issue first started, and see a lot of angry/upset people. People who have vowed to sue, disown Apple, etc.

FWIW, my wife has Android and has had this annoying error popup constantly on her Samsung Galaxy for several MONTHS, with no fix.

The point is, give Apple some slack. No, their updates have not been flawless as of late, but this fix could have taken a lot longer. Thankfully in cases like this, it's helpful that Apple has a closed system and they can address issues as needed and as quickly as possible. No, I'm not an Apple sheep, just an empathetic sheep :-D

Please don't use "downward" comparative logic to justify a problem. I was "bashed" and "blamed" by the Apple tier-2 support person for the constant reboots and locking of my Watch 3. And I have had (and continue to have) an all-Apple household.

In my opinion, it is their duty to make it work as well as apologize and recognize when something is not working well, which is what Apple has been historically very bad at doing (#battery_gate).

My point is, Apple is not in the business of selling mediocre devices. People pay and expect the best. You want slack? Get a cheap device.

I've updated my series 3 to 7.0.3. It has been a bit, ehm, adventurous: I had to unpair and pair it back, but at the end I eventually get through the update.

Can't say if 7.0.3 solves the random crashes issue, since crashes were random and it's too early to sing "victory !".

What I can say for sure is I can no more unlock my MacBook with the Watch, tried to power off all (Mac, iPhone, Watch) restart, reset, no way: when I check the option "Use your Apple Watch to unlock apps and your Mac" on the mac, it runs for something like 10 sec then shows a popup saying it can't connect to the Watch.

Funny things is handoff works regularly.

Does anyone have the same issue?

I've experienced it before with issues clearly affecting many many people in these forums and yet being denied by Apple official support channels. I generally don't bother taking the time to report them any more because I know there isn't a resolution until a fix is out.

Every major release I know I shouldn't upgrade for a couple of months until the bugs are ironed out....but I usually relent as I want to play with the new features.

It's disappointing - but then that's the tech world we live in. Would it be better if we didn't receive updates at all? Personally I'm prepared to put up with the occasional issue so long as they keep supporting the product.

Getting angry about it is a fruitless waste of energy, just need to be patient for fixes - or hold off upgrading....which still means being patient 🤪

I recently purchased a 6 and had issues with the watch locking on my wrist & had a couple of random reboots. After working with a senior AC advisor & the engineers, next step was wearing it on my opposite wrist as I have a small piece of a tattoo that the watch covered. I didn’t think that was the issue as I’ve worn an Apple Watch for over 3 years (a 3 & a 4) & never had a problem. Well, I’ve had NO issues with it on my un-tattooed wrist. I looked on the Apple website & read about the sensor redesign so for me, it seems that was the problem. I was pretty surprised but glad I found out what it was. I’m already used to having it on the opposite wrist so hopefully case closed for me. Hope others get it resolved also.

I completely agree wzaatar!

As I mentioned earlier in this forum, Apple’s intentional reluctance to acknowledge these issues and confirm they are working on a fix causes unecessary frustration, confusion and anger for everyone concerned. I’m even shocked with the obvious lack of communication between Apple’s software development team and their own customer support teams.

It goes without saying that when these issues arise Apple has a fundamental obligation to acknowledge it and confirm they are working on a fix. We as Apple customers pay a premium price not only for premium products, but also for premium service. It's difficult to suggest we are receiving this premium service when Apple intentionally chooses to stay silent while everyone is left to battle through these issues on our own.
