I just found a fix that worked for me! Supposedly the custom dictionary in iOS/iPadOS 14 isn’t compatible with the one from previous OS’s, and resetting the keyboard dictionary might reduce or eliminate the keyboard lag problem. I was doubtful at first, but I went ahead and reset my dictionary, and INSTANTLY the lag problem disappeared!
To do this, go to Settings > General > Reset > Reset Keyboard Dictionary.
Another potential fix that might work for some of you is force-restarting your device. The steps for doing this is different depending on which iPhone/iPad you’re using, but it usually involves pressing and holding all the buttons on your device at once until the Apple logo appears. It didn’t work for me, but it might work for someone.
I did the newer update something like ios 14.2 🤣😂. I was skeptical but it doesn’t seem to lag anymore i can text pics and upload from sites and send to others. This 14 did my 11 Pro dirty but my sis 8 plus was good with it. 🤷🏽♀️
I am having this issue as well, especially when using an external keyboard that attaches to my iPad Pro (1st Gen). I tried the hard reset...no dice. I tried resetting my keyboard dictionary...no dice, AND I lost all my personalized words in the process. I tried turning off the predictive feature of the keyboard...no dice. So I turned off ALL advanced functions of the keyboard (auto-correction, auto-capitalization, check spelling, etc.)...Dice! The keyboard now has very little lag (there is just a hint of it, but at least now it is usable). But should we have to lose ALL advanced function of our keyboard just to be able to type words in iOS14? That's really not a viable option for an upgrade. That's a downgrade, at least as far as user experience goes.
Literally everyone here is just saying they have the same issue or something that works for like 2 seconds. Does anyone actually have a solution? ._. I like to do a LOT in notes including write stories, put a grocery list down, game tips + tricks, etc, but now it's impossible to use it. It's one of my most used apps and now I can't use it at all because it's so laggy. PLEASE fix this ASAP. I'm sick of it.
thats good to hear but i extensively use Icloud.. i edit my notes on ipad and iphone.. so i require it to work... and since it used to work on previous ios versions ... it should work well in update also..

Apple please fix it ASAP. It’s extremely annoying and affecting my productivity as I rely heavily on Notes for work.
The lagging time spans from 2 to 3 seconds both when typing and deleting text.
i found a fix that works perfectly for me (iPhone 6s plus) when the keyboard reset didn’t. It only works for individual notes, one at a time though. Open a lagging note. Select all and copy. Open a new note. Paste. Lag has completely stopped.
OMG SAME!!! I’ll start typing and it’ll freeze on the first two letters. Then all of a sudden it’ll write out the rest. It started happening after I updated my phone (XR). This is why I didn’t want to update it!!! Ughhhhh there’s always something.
Most definitely, this is an issue with syncing with iCloud.
The Notes app on my wife's iPad mini had come to an excruciatingly slow crawl. But she was able to find a work around. She went to Settings>Notes and selected the "On my iPad Account". This created an account of notes that is only stored on the iPad. There was 0 lag on notes made in that folder.
She also enabled an account with Exchange email account. The option there is also found at Settings>Notes>Accounts. No lag for notes in that account either.
Then finally she went to Settings>iCloud>Notes and turned off Sync. It erased the notes on her iPad (while leaving them in iCloud). She then quit the Notes app by double clicking the home button and swiping it up. Reopened it and then reenabled Sync in Settings>iCloud>Notes. When all the notes downloaded there was no longer lag on any notes in the All iCloud folder.
On that last option, I still don't know if it will return to how it was before. Only time will tell.
Hope that helps everyone. I know that these bugs are extremely frustrating when you depend so heavily on a particular app.
Same issue on iPhone X. Only since the latest update. I've tried the suggestions- Cleared ram, restarted, etc. Nothing fixes it. Hopefully the next update addresses this issue because it's very annoying.
While using an iPad 9.7 Pro & Logitech CREATE Backlit Keyboard Case for 9.7-inch iPad Pro, any time the note gets more than a few hundred characters, typing starts to lag. It acts like it’s refreshing the entire note each time. The longer the note, the longer the delay. After a few thousand characters I can type entire sentences if I don’t look at the screen. Other programs (Safari, iMessage, UPS) don’t show any difference. Seems: Notes was ‘upgraded’ to refresh the note with each keystroke and only tested for 40 seconds with 100 character notes.
First I can’t have notes from a second account - had to share each, individual, single, separate note. Then old mini server can’t share notes because it can’t upgrade to something that isn’t backwards compatible on Apple servers. Then Notes is arbitrarily changed and not tested enough. Person who wrote it should have to type code in it. After 2 pages and waiting 3 seconds to see a variable name t-y-p-e-d-o-u-t, I bet they’d fix it.
I did experienced the same after installing ios14 a few days ago.
Forced restart doesn’t do the trick.
One thing I’ve noticed was that, from my iPhone settings, my Apple ID doesn’t seem to be able to display all the devices where I have used my Apple ID. I am using same Apple ID on both my iPhone and my McBook. On normal occasions it should always displays both devices, but in this occasion it doesn’t.
So I thought it could be this reason.
I opened my McBook (currently on Mojave OS), check my Apple Id settings - all is well.
And then, I’ve checked my iPhone Apple Id settings again and give it a minute, it does display both devices after that.
I tried again to use my Notes again, and viola! the keyboard is back to its normal behaviour. No more lagging.
Apple should seriously check this as for some people it may cause panicked.
I hope this will help your case as well.
P.S. I didn’t reset my keyboard dictionary as some other advices I have seen online.
I have the 11 pro max. My phone updated by itself without any confirmation. I did not want to update my phone as I heard bad reviews about the new update! Now my keyboard is so slow, and when I tap my screen for something it takes sometime to register everything.
iOS 14.2 fixed Notes for me on iPad Pro 9.7. Screen keyboard still pops up when waking up app even though Logitech Create is attached and it has habit of going to full screen if it (Notes) was open in slide-over taking up that smaller “whole screen.” But I can type full speed again.
None of the suggested solutions worked for me (and I was very annoyed to have gotten rid of my custom dictionary for nothing). BUT working in a new notes doc (not my usual, now very long one) is much, much faster. So as a temporary fix, I will just have to keep everything in short documents, then they're usable.
Same thing! It lags in email, iMessage, notes, and when typing a link in safari — basically lags when I type!
Also, sometimes when I unlock the phone the lighting is extremely dark and I am not able to adjust it back to normal. I would have to sleep the screen then turn on again...and usually it works.
