iOS 14 text notification issues

I am not getting sound notifications on text messages nor is the banner showing up on my locked screen. I have an iPhone 11 and just downloaded the latest iOS 14. Have reset my phone twice now. Please advise. Thank you.

Like many on here I had been having many of the same issues, missing all sorts of notifications, not just text since upgrading to ios 14 (first 14.1 then 14.2). Here is what fixed my issue... I went to settings->notifications->messages (for this example) and scrolled down to the options section. For the show previews section the "when unlocked (default)" was selected, meaning only notifications would only appear when the phone is unlocked when is hardly ever the case. I switched it always and the issue is now gone. I had to go into may other apps one by one and toggle this option back to always. Showing previews only when unlocked was 100% not my setting before this update.

What is interesting/****** me off is my wife just upgraded to ios14 and did not have issue. I went into her phone to settings->notifications->messages and for her show previews option was selected as "always (default)". Why on her phone she has options listed as "always (default)" and on my is "always" and "when unlocked (default)" I have no clue.

Thanks Apple!

From Get Support:

after running diagnostics

  • Well, reviewing the results, the entire system is in good condition, in this case it may be something that we cannot identify from here, and it would be best for the technician to review it.
  • you do know that this is not an isolated case and there is a whole forum about this
  • https://discussions.apple.com/thread/251815788?answerId=255129116022&page=93
  • 3:31 PM
  • Thanks for sharing that to me
  • 3:33 PM
  • And yes, it has been a recurring case, as I was telling you, many times this failure is solved by making the corresponding update that corrects these glitches, many other times it is due to the general notification settings, but as you mentioned to me that you already did all this procedure, and the problem is still not solved, even after the reset to factory settings and the diagnosis, the best option is to have it reviewed by one of our authorized technicians, so we can rule out any problem related to the hardware or software of the device that may be causing the lack of these notifications.
  • 3:35 PM
  • are you passing this up line; it's obviously in the firmware
  • 3:37 PM
  • Yes, as you mentioned, it is most likely the firmware, so we are discarding all possible steps to consider the service options, the last thing I can ask is also, if you have tried to do the restore remotely or did you do it using a device like mac or PC, or from iTunes?
  • 3:38 PM
  • back up on the mac itunes
  • Or you only did it from the device, I must corroborate this because many times, if the update is only done with the home network remotely, sometimes it does not load all the features, this can be corrected by doing the update from a computer. That would be our next tool to use in case you haven't already.
  • usb cable to the mac
  • You did the backup, then the update and finally the restore from iTunes, and then you put the backup information back on the device and still the problem continued?
  • correct
  • oh, thank you very much for commenting, and in this case, I think we already used all the possible tools, and even the device still does not respond to notifications.
  • it's random

I have not been getting sound notifications for text messages for a number of months. I have tried 20 different suggested fixes and nothing works. I have tried the do not disturb settings, notification settings, volume button settings, my watch settings, and absolutely nothing will fix it. I had a competition in my office to see if anyone could fix it and no one could. I can’t keep using Apple because I cannot go without getting notifications for text messages. I’m about to put out a reward for finding the solution! I have the new iOS 14 and new Apple Watch 6. So frustrating.

the feedback form isn’t even updated to include the latest iOS in the drop down selection...

this is very frustrating and seems like an odd intentional update - why would I not want a notification about a text while I’m on the phone?

I also noticed that my normal text message vibration notification is much softer than it was in the previous iOS version so I’m even missing texts while my phone is idle. I don’t see them until I pick up my phone. Terrible.

After iOS 14 update, all my notifications, especially badges, but banners and all as well, have not been working anymore. Whatsapp, wechat, telegram, spark, basically i only see messages when i open those apps. As if the apps were not working in the background and notifications were somehow not pushed. It is extremely annoying as I m missing lots of important messages now.

The 14.01 update didn't help at all.

Please help

Yes, I have my notifications working now. I wasn't getting any. I have a link in this thread where Apple tells how to set it up. You have to do it thru shortcuts IF you added the icon covers or widgets. I don't have the link but this is a copy of the last step. Look back & I answered Brogellr & I believe it was Kesha who asked if it really works. It did. Notice at the bottom of this screen where the orange icon is ........it says allow messages to access notifications. There isn't anything in the Notifications section of settings that I found to work.

See page 5 in this thread.

I began using shortcuts after I upgraded to iOS 14.0. I wasn't getting notifications at all & found Apple's info about shortcuts. If you didn't change the look of the icon or have any widgets then you're right it must be something else. It is now working for reminders, email, messages because of including the part of giving access to notifications. Each one of the icons & widgets in my screen below have shortcuts.

This is what worked for me. My icons had all been changed so I would have a them. I have several widgets, a slide show, etc. and I kept thinking that was all I had done after the first upgrade iOS 14.

I went to shortcuts and there is a notification there. It goes into whatever shortcut you have such as messages. This explains it better than I can. Just so glad to have everything working now.

Did you see my link just above this? Mine notifications are working now. I don't get the red numbers as to how many calls, texts, etc but I am getting banners both at top of screen & sound. I have new icon pix & widgets. If you used shortcuts there is where you set up the notifications. It is written by Apple.

my original reply is on page 5. But then I got a notice to reply to the discussion just a few minutes ago. Hope it works for you.

i have a screen print above also but you have to start out in shortcuts. Then use the 3 dots in the upper right corner & tell it to put on home page & go down to notifications and use the photo for that shortcut.

@steelc, this article says beta versions are only available to developers so it is misleading when users give the impression anyone can download it. I did a factory reset that didn’t work and caused me to lose all my personalized settings, it did a reset all settings and that didn’t work either. I have tried everything that everyone has suggested without success.

I had no notifications on text, phone, reminders, etc. I used this link provided in the Apple documentation & it worked. I get sound and banners but not any red numbers like you would see on text or email. Or even calls.

The guy said updating to 14.2 fixes it but I haven't gotten it yet.

the answer currently without any updates is to add a notification in the shortcut. If you changed apps or added widgets.

So this fix might not last, but for now it's working. I just got off the phone with Apple Support. I was telling her that I'd tested with Bluetooth on and connected to a device and also Bluetooth on but not connected to any devices. The only non-Apple bluetooth device I connect to is a Soundcore Wakey wired speaker. While she was researching, she said the speaker might be the issue. I removed all bluetooth devices from my phone. Issue persisted. I finally pulled the plug for the Soundcore speaker out of the wall. My device works as expected now. I receive notifications through both Apple Watch and AirPods pro. I receive notifications even when Bluetooth is on but not connected to any devices. This seems like voodoo to me, but for now... it's working. Here is a link to the types of bluetooth device profiles are compatible with iOS:

Try removing all bluetooth devices and then connecting them one by one. If you have any wired devices, unplug them. Let me know if this helps anyone else.
