iOS 14 text notification issues

I am not getting sound notifications on text messages nor is the banner showing up on my locked screen. I have an iPhone 11 and just downloaded the latest iOS 14. Have reset my phone twice now. Please advise. Thank you.

I've also been fighting this notification issue for months on my iPhone 11 Pro. Apple no help. I discovered that turning off bluetooth on my phone fixed the problem (allowed text notifications to sound and appear, whether the phone was locked or not). But with bluetooth on, notifications only sounded & appeared with the phone unlocked. Obviously, I didn't want to leave bluetooth off all the time.

I also came to realize this issue started when I got a new Apple Watch 6 a few months ago. Coincidence? Taking the watch on and off didn't help. And with the watch on, it didn't sound notifications either.

But the posting from StubbornPixie got me thinking about killing the mirror function on the watch for the Messages app. So, iPhone Watch app>Messages>"Custom" "Notifications Off" seems to have SOLVED THE PROBLEM for me. My iPhone 11 Pro now notifies me of incoming text messages with bluetooth on. I realize my watch won't ping with messages until Apple fixes the root problem, but at least I won't be missing message notifications altogether.

Hope this helps others.

I think you will see your watch does have something to do with it. When I power my watch off I get the notification on my phone. To make sure I get my wife’s notifications on my watch with sound, I turned on emergency bypass for ringtones and texts in her contact info. I now get a chime on my watch even with silent mode. She is the only one I have set up like this so I don’t get a bunch of chimes on the golf course 😊

I noticed this issue sometime after upgrading my iPhone 7 to Ver 14. No notifications for messages or emails. I tried everything. My Mac is not the problem because I rarely use it. When not in use, it is off. So with a iPhone 7, and a Watch 4, nothing on either device. I used to get notifications on both. When someone calls me it rings both devices. But nothing for messages or emails. I gave up, thinking the iPhone 7 was broke some how.

So I bought a iPhone 12 brand new, thinking that would fix the problem. It did not, same problem. Complained to Apple, then I saw this thread. One user said, "turn off Bluetooth", did that, and lo and behold, I get notifications on the phone. Turn Bluetooth back on and no notifications. Turn it back off and notifications work. That is unacceptable, Watch needs to be paired with the phone so need Bluetooth. Saw another post that stated, goto the watch app on your phone, tap "Notifications" then scroll down to "Messages" tap that, then "Custom" then "Notifications Off" and that worked. The phone gets notifications but not the watch. Check it out if you can live without notifications on your watch.

I received this. After reading your post snd knowing what I went through when my mom recently passed away... I wanted to pass this on to you.

I think I’ve solved the problem I’ve turned off my scheduled do not disturb and now my messages are coming back through again.

I posted this before. IOS 14.2 added a new hidden feature into all contacts(silent notification). 14.3 did fix some of the issues. However any contacts I had before 14.2 will be silent. this feature must ne turned off per contact. To disable this annoying feature, go into the contact when the person contacts you. the feature is found in the information tab of the message. Find it and turn it off(in i message, not general contacts).

if you check the conversations where this happens (by going to the conversation, tap on the person at the top and go to "info", is the "hide alerts" option checked?

Because that's what I discovered did this to me. Yes, it disables the sound, the lockscreen thing, every aspect of getting notified of new texts.

It seems that they added this new feature, to hide alerts for specific people -- that's fine by me -- but the problem is that it randomly activates after the update, for certain conversations. I believe if you uncheck the option though it should fix it permanently for that conversation thread at least.

**I believe I found the fix. In the text message conversation, go to the very top and tap on on the i/info at the top right. In the menue that pops up, thereI believe I found the fix. In the text message conversation, go to the very top and tap on on the i/info at the top right. In the menue that pops up, there is an option called "hide alerts". Disable that -- I now get alerts for this conversation again.

Needless to say, I never activated this feature -- I suspect that for old contacts that were carried over into the new version, somehow this might sometimes be checked by default without us knowing?

It's also possible that not everyone posting in this thread is actually having the same problem, with the same solution. But I hope this helps somebody out there! is an option called "hide alerts". Disable that -- I now get alerts for this conversation again.**

Some of the suggested solutions seemed weak but in the end I just now shut down my phone and restarted, the weakest solution of all but often most effective. It didn’t fix it, but it did show a crescent moon beside the name of the person whose texts were coming in mute. This time when I clicked on the “i” it said that the one individual had “Hide Alerts” turned on. I did not ever turn that on and I don’t even know how it could’ve been hit accidentally since I never go into that section of the information about him...except when I don’t get notified of texts. Which I did earlier and that wasn’t turned on. I like to think all’s well that ends well but, come on.

I’ve just fixed this for my boyfriend.

Go into settings > Notifications > messages > 1. Make sure notifications are turned on 2. Make sure “ALERTS” are allowed on all 3 - Lock Screen, banner and notification centre if not tick those. 3. Make sure you have a notification sound on there - found under sounds.

If you want to see how many unread messages are on ensure badges are on.

Hope this helps 😊

Ok so I have officially solved this on 3 different iPhone 12 and 12 Pros so far.

Go to settings, notifications, messages. Turn on Allow Notifications at the top. Turn off and then BACK ON all three (Lock Screen, Notification Center, Banners). Banner style temporary. Go to sounds and select a new sound or click and test your current sound. Turn off and then BACK ON both Badges and Show in CarPlay. Once you have everything on just turn the top Allow Notifications at the top off and then BACK ON. Presto...fixes it every time!

I cannot believe it! My iPhone SE has a tiny switch located upper in the left lateral. It is for "hardware silent". It shows yellow when ON. I'd never used it before. It seems I accidentally moved and provoked the problem. Every "notification when blocked" problem was solved when I switched it back to OFF. I hope this can help some users! Thanks for the support.

I have had the problem of no text alerts at times on my iPhone SE as well as my iPhone 11 for well over a year. Many calls to customer support did no good until this last call! Several screenshots of my phone were sent to the engineers and it was discovered that some of my alerts were going to my Mac computers which resulted in messages received on the phones, but no alerts. Turning off iMessages on the computers and iPad solved the problem immediately.

If this is happening to you, I discovered that for some reason “hide alerts” was enabled for some of my contacts. You can check this by going to Info under you contact or group in the Messages app, then check to see if Hide Alerts is enabled.

Not sure how this was enabled bc I didn’t enable it, but this fixed this issue for me.

The workaround to this was mentioned earlier. This worked for me 100%.

Go to settings —> notifications.

Click on “Shows Previews” and choose “Always.” This means your locked iPhone will show notification previews before it’s unlocked. So, all you need to do is go to specific apps you don’t want this to happen with and change it to “When unlocked.” It takes a few minutes of changing settings, but this solved it for me instantly.

I have had this issue since iOS 14 dropped. I honestly feel like I had it in iOS 13 as well, but that's maybe because this has been going on for such an incredibly long time.

I have tried everything. EVERYTHING. I have talked to Apple Support and been escalated to Engineering. First it was my iPhone 11's silent switch. Got a replacement phone. Issue persisted with new phone. So, then they thought it was a third-party bluetooth issue. Disconnected my bluetooth speaker, reset network settings, set up as new phone, restored from backup. Turned off bluetooth - Hey! That worked. But, like, I need to use bluetooth for my Apple watch and AirPods. Issue persists. Try turning on and off iMessages.

Finally signed out of iMessage, then turned it back on BUT I did not sign in to iMessage using my Apple ID, so I can only receive messages using my phone number, not my apple addresses. THIS WORKS! It has worked consistently for me for about a month now. I am receiving all notifications with sound on my Apple watch, AirPods, and iPhone depending on which I choose the notification to come through. The problem is, I would really like to be able to use iMessage on my phone so that I can continue my messages on my iMac, MacBook, and iPad. It is completely bananas that Apple has not addressed this issue in FOUR updates now.

Hi

Long story short:

It was the AirPods Pro.

Bye turning off bluetooth and wait 30sec the porblem is gone.

The Long story:

(sorry in advance for my bad English, I have dystlexia and I do not get paid for this troubleshooting job.

so I'm not that interested in fine-tuning my English In this case.)

but I feel I need to share my findings related to this issue

background history:

I just replaced(upgraded) my Apple devices.

iPhone x -> iPhone 12 Pro max

IPad pro —> iPad air (with Pencile and keyboard)

Apple Watch 3 -> Apple watch 6

And then this issue started.

I have AppleCare+ on every device.

-Have talked to Apple Support over 3 1/2 houre. (Not mutch help there, but nice people)

  • Have ereased my Watch 4 times now
  • Have ereasd my iPhone 12 pro max 3 times.
  • Have changed from eSIM to physical SIM

troubleshooting:

The problem only acured when bluethooth is ON, I suspected it was the Apple watch (it was the last device set up on my iPhone)

I was prepering a return my new Apple watch 6 (cellulary edition) so I ereased it.

(I had a couple new unopen Apple watch 6 (non cellulary) that I was going to give out to family members)

I unpacked a new Apple watch and set it up, after one hour the same «no notification» problem started.

So it is not my watch 6 cellulary.

This/my problem is clearly related to Bluetooth, (when BT is off every ting is fine)

And then I realised I always is having my Airpods Pro connected when this bug i pressent.

When bluetooth is ON my iPad air and my iPhone the problem can be present,

If I turn bluetooth  OFF my iPad Air (and wait 30sec, to battery status is not shown in the iPad) then my iPhone vibrated and souds,

If I put my AirPods in the case

(and wait 30sec, to battery status is not shown) then I get notification.

I immediately orded a new par of AirPods Pro from Apple (as my troubleshooting has concluded that AirPods Pro was the origin of this problem (in my/this case)

I recived my new set of AirPods Pro to day, I deleted the old from my Bluetooth settings,

open «Find My.app» on my iPhone and removed the old par of AirPods from my Apple ID.

And then I paired my new AirPods Pro.

And the problem is still here!!

I am now returning all my AirPods.

MY SOLUTION (which is not acceptable):

- Turn OFF Bluetooth on every Apple device (iPad, Mac etc..) except my iPhone.

my conclusion:

iOS or iPad OS have a software related bug which was introduced when the AirPods pro was given the ability to switch between Apple devices automatically between Apple devices signed in to the same Apple ID.

I guess the fault lies in iOS or iPad OS (because the bug was present in my «new» AirPods pro that came to day with the old firmware 2D27, it has since been upgraded to 3A283)

therefore my conclusion is that this is an iOS/iPad OS bug related to which Apple device that should notify the user, Airpods, ipad, iphone, watch??

It would have been nice if other jusers who have this problem could try turn OFF bluetooth,

And write if you have/had AirPods connected when this problem acured.

NB: this bug is NOT pressent when I juse my BOSE headphone!
