iOS 14 text notification issues

I am not getting sound notifications on text messages nor is the banner showing up on my locked screen. I have an iPhone 11 and just downloaded the latest iOS 14. Have reset my phone twice now. Please advise. Thank you.

I've also been fighting this notification issue for months on my iPhone 11 Pro. Apple no help. I discovered that turning off bluetooth on my phone fixed the problem (allowed text notifications to sound and appear, whether the phone was locked or not). But with bluetooth on, notifications only sounded & appeared with the phone unlocked. Obviously, I didn't want to leave bluetooth off all the time.

I also came to realize this issue started when I got a new Apple Watch 6 a few months ago. Coincidence? Taking the watch on and off didn't help. And with the watch on, it didn't sound notifications either.

But the posting from StubbornPixie got me thinking about killing the mirror function on the watch for the Messages app. So, iPhone Watch app>Messages>"Custom" "Notifications Off" seems to have SOLVED THE PROBLEM for me. My iPhone 11 Pro now notifies me of incoming text messages with bluetooth on. I realize my watch won't ping with messages until Apple fixes the root problem, but at least I won't be missing message notifications altogether.

Hope this helps others.

PaulaMesa, you are right, the problem is the mobile carrier!! Thanks to your comment I began to remember and check emails, I identified that the problem of notifications started the same day that I made a change of plan with my mobile carrier Claro (that's the name of my mobile carrier in my country). I have done a test, I put in my iPhone a chip of another number and the notifications started working without problems;  then I put my chip in another cell phone and that cell phone stopped receiving notifications.

In conclusion, as “PaulaMesa” said, the problem is the mobile carrier.  Now I have to call Claro and I hope that the technology area knows how to fix this, or my last option will be to change the mobile carrier.

This explains why no solution at the iOS level solved the problem, and why not even changing the device was fixed. Check if you recently made changes to your mobile carrier. I hope this can help you.

An interesting detail is that I can make it work IF I take off my Apple Watch. Then text notifications / vibration work exactly as they should on my iPhone.

The way notifications work if you have an Apple Watch are as follows:

iPhone locked/watch locked - notifications sound on phone

iPhone locked/watch unlocked - notifications sound on watch

iPhone unlocked/watch unlocked - notifications sound on phone

That is as it has always been.

Yeah. I kept seeing troubleshooting tips to make sure DND isn’t on. Well it’s not but it appears the “Silence:", either option “Always” or “While phone is locked" might be active even though DND is NOT enabled. That setting always troubled me because you can’t select something like “Never”. Hoping they fix too!

I have tried everything that everyone has suggested including updating to 14.2 and nothing worked. When my iPhone is unlocked I get text notifications. When my iPhone is locked I get text notifications on my Apple Watch. The problem has been when I am on Bluetooth, my MacBook or my iPad. I get no text alerts. Someone said Apple support said to try a factory reset. I wanted to confirm that is the next option because it is such a pain restoring. I talked to Apple support and she said I did everything I could do and the next option in fact was a restore. I backed up my iPhone to iCloud then did restore through iTunes. It has taken most of the afternoon to getting everything back from iCloud but it appears the problem is fixed. As it was explained to me sometimes we need to wipe out the software and reinstall the current version as if it is a new iPhone. Makes sense. Fingers crossed that I keep getting text alerts now.

I have worked most of the day with Apple support and an iOS Senior Advisor regarding this issue on my iPhone 12 running 14.2. So far I have reset my phone, reset all settings and done the full OS replacement via iTunes. Nothing has worked. All notification settings look good and are what you'd expect.

I also have an apple watch where the notifications have continued to work fine.

So far, the only fix is to turn off Bluetooth on my phone. In other words, when Bluetooth is enabled, I don't receive any notifications on my iPhone when locked. When I disable Bluetooth, the notifications appear on my lock screen as expected.

Not sure if this helps anyone, but I'd be curious if this also works for anyone else. I have another call with Apple tomorrow and would like to report more on the issue.

I called Apple support, and they walked me through a fix which is not related to the problem necessarily.

Go to Settings->Messages->Send & Recieve and Un-check all of your “send & receive” email addresses or other phone numbers except for ONE on the device your using, in my case it was my cell phone number.

That fixed it for me, even though it’s not a long-term or root cause fix as I’d like to get messages from my Apple ID email as well but it’ll do until they fix it in an update.

Here’s what sometimes worked for me . If I click on the person’s name and then on info , I check if hide alert is not toggled on . Also sometimes I go to notification settings for Message ( or any other message app) and toggle it off and back on them restart phone . Worked for me but bug comes back after a few weeks and I redo the steps again . It’s obviously a software bug

When I updated to 14.2 a new feature popped up in my contacts that i can only view when I am contacted under the text message ( not in the contact feature ) it’s called “ hide alert “

when I turn that off that contact functions normally

updating to 14.3 allows only the contacts to which I have turned that feature off to function normally

all contacts who have yet to contact me will not give me an audible notification until i manually change this feature
