iOS 14 text notification issues

I am not getting sound notifications on text messages nor is the banner showing up on my locked screen. I have an iPhone 11 and just downloaded the latest iOS 14. Have reset my phone twice now. Please advise. Thank you.

Like many on here I had been having many of the same issues, missing all sorts of notifications, not just text since upgrading to ios 14 (first 14.1 then 14.2). Here is what fixed my issue... I went to settings->notifications->messages (for this example) and scrolled down to the options section. For the show previews section the "when unlocked (default)" was selected, meaning only notifications would only appear when the phone is unlocked when is hardly ever the case. I switched it always and the issue is now gone. I had to go into may other apps one by one and toggle this option back to always. Showing previews only when unlocked was 100% not my setting before this update.

What is interesting/****** me off is my wife just upgraded to ios14 and did not have issue. I went into her phone to settings->notifications->messages and for her show previews option was selected as "always (default)". Why on her phone she has options listed as "always (default)" and on my is "always" and "when unlocked (default)" I have no clue.

Thanks Apple!

Not sure about everyone else, but I had this same exact issue. This is what I finally figured out. Even though my car was not on, this setting was causing my issue.

  • Settings/Notifications/Messages --- I tuned off 'Show in CarPlay'. Once I turned that setting off, my notifications started working again.

Hope this helps and glad to share --- for all the times I have learned from others that have shared.

Still on ios 13.5, and reading this doubtful to upgrade.

However some comments seems confused with the apple watch functionality. You should know that by design, if you have watch notifications activated on the watch, when the iphone is locked notifications will only display on the watch. This has been like this since the watch was introduced.

Questions:

  • Those with Apple Watch. Do you get your notifications on the watch when the iphone is locked?
  • Those without apple watch. Are you also not receiving notifications?

I have had this issue since 14.2, now on 14.3 and it still persists.

I have noticed a few things.

  1. Turning Bluetooth off works, but then that is not a viable solution, especially if you have an Apple Watch or other devices.
  2. There seems to be a correlation with text message forwarding to a Mac. I'll sign out of iMessage on my Mac, and it works. I'll sign back in, turn forwarding on, and it works for a while, but then reverts to not waking my Lock Screen. I've found that fully signing out of iMessage on my Mac fixes the problem, but again, that is also not a viable solution.
  3. I am not going to reset and set up my phone from new for a third time. I shouldn't have to do that. Apple should fix this.
  4. It's basic functionality. They need to get it together.

I've submitted a bug report to Apple, and I suggest everyone should do the same.

My husband had the issue where his IPhone 11 wouldn’t make a sound when he would receive a text message.

This is how I fixed it:

  • go into text messages
  • click and HOLD one of the messages
  • there will be a few options that pop up
  • click where it says “show alerts”

This fixed his issue for him. I don’t know if he accidentally clicked “hide alerts” at one point which put a “do not disturb” on that specific contact or if it came with the update but it works now and hopefully this will help others too :)

Apparently the notifications for Messages can be turned "on" and "off" for individual senders. What have worked for me (iOS 14.4) is the following:

  • Open "Messages".
  • Select the main page (with the title "Messages" on top) on which you see the last messages from your various contacts. I.e. you need to go one step back from any open conversation.
  • Click and hold a message from the contact (from which you are not getting alerts) until you see a drop-down menu. [NB: Don't click on the photo / name in the circle but on the message].
  • Click on "Show Alerts"

Hope this helps.

Hi

Long story short:

It was the AirPods Pro.

Bye turning off bluetooth and wait 30sec the porblem is gone.

The Long story:

(sorry in advance for my bad English, I have dystlexia and I do not get paid for this troubleshooting job.

so I'm not that interested in fine-tuning my English In this case.)

but I feel I need to share my findings related to this issue

background history:

I just replaced(upgraded) my Apple devices.

iPhone x -> iPhone 12 Pro max

IPad pro —> iPad air (with Pencile and keyboard)

Apple Watch 3 -> Apple watch 6

And then this issue started.

I have AppleCare+ on every device.

-Have talked to Apple Support over 3 1/2 houre. (Not mutch help there, but nice people)

  • Have ereased my Watch 4 times now
  • Have ereasd my iPhone 12 pro max 3 times.
  • Have changed from eSIM to physical SIM

troubleshooting:

The problem only acured when bluethooth is ON, I suspected it was the Apple watch (it was the last device set up on my iPhone)

I was prepering a return my new Apple watch 6 (cellulary edition) so I ereased it.

(I had a couple new unopen Apple watch 6 (non cellulary) that I was going to give out to family members)

I unpacked a new Apple watch and set it up, after one hour the same «no notification» problem started.

So it is not my watch 6 cellulary.

This/my problem is clearly related to Bluetooth, (when BT is off every ting is fine)

And then I realised I always is having my Airpods Pro connected when this bug i pressent.

When bluetooth is ON my iPad air and my iPhone the problem can be present,

If I turn bluetooth  OFF my iPad Air (and wait 30sec, to battery status is not shown in the iPad) then my iPhone vibrated and souds,

If I put my AirPods in the case

(and wait 30sec, to battery status is not shown) then I get notification.

I immediately orded a new par of AirPods Pro from Apple (as my troubleshooting has concluded that AirPods Pro was the origin of this problem (in my/this case)

I recived my new set of AirPods Pro to day, I deleted the old from my Bluetooth settings,

open «Find My.app» on my iPhone and removed the old par of AirPods from my Apple ID.

And then I paired my new AirPods Pro.

And the problem is still here!!

I am now returning all my AirPods.

MY SOLUTION (which is not acceptable):

- Turn OFF Bluetooth on every Apple device (iPad, Mac etc..) except my iPhone.

my conclusion:

iOS or iPad OS have a software related bug which was introduced when the AirPods pro was given the ability to switch between Apple devices automatically between Apple devices signed in to the same Apple ID.

I guess the fault lies in iOS or iPad OS (because the bug was present in my «new» AirPods pro that came to day with the old firmware 2D27, it has since been upgraded to 3A283)

therefore my conclusion is that this is an iOS/iPad OS bug related to which Apple device that should notify the user, Airpods, ipad, iphone, watch??

It would have been nice if other jusers who have this problem could try turn OFF bluetooth,

And write if you have/had AirPods connected when this problem acured.

NB: this bug is NOT pressent when I juse my BOSE headphone!

Kenya, I'm not sure if you were asking me since you replied to Scottywwww, but the notification is in the shortcuts. I'm assuming you changed icons, made widgets like I did.

I have over 60 shortcuts I had completed to use the photo for that app. I only needed phone, messages, mail & contacts. Assuming you looked at the link above (the 2nd one), yes it worked. And I changed just those 4 that I wanted to receive notifications. The second part of the shortcut looks like the attached. Within the shortcut go to the three dots in the upper right corner. This is where it says add to Home Screen. Look down and my notification is in orange. And it has "allow messages to use" notifications. Mine was of and I toggled to turn on. Then I rebooted, and it worked.

In case you missed this in the thread I'm posting again. Are you on Android or iPhone? I'm using iPhone 11 Pro. The screen print below is how I made both sound & banners work. See notifications in orange? You click on add to Home Screen & then click on the icon for notifications and add the image you want. It made all the difference for me. None of the red alert #s but I do get a banner at the top of the screen, sound, and in the Notification Center. You may want to do a chat w/ Support or schedule a phone call if you had not added icons or widgets.
