iOS 14 text notification issues

I am not getting sound notifications on text messages nor is the banner showing up on my locked screen. I have an iPhone 11 and just downloaded the latest iOS 14. Have reset my phone twice now. Please advise. Thank you.

Have also experienced this with one contact only. All others seem to notify me correctly with banners badges and sounds. However I’ve also had the issue of hearing random notifications sounds without receiving any actual message/banners/badges. This has happened with the default text tone -(note), which isn’t even my chosen tone. Ha anyone else experienced this?

So this issue has been going on for 9 months now! Other Apps notifications on my iPhone work. Only Apple's Messaging app doesn't. Gone thru 14.2. all the way to 14.4.2. No luck. In all versions, no message notification on the iPhone 11; sometimes works on iPhone SE. VERY FRUSTRATING!!

Called Apple Support, and they told me to *try* iOS 14.5.1 which is the latest. Will try on 1 phone to see if issue fixed. The other thing Support said to *try* was to reset all settings, re-enter all settings, and then reload all apps. No commitment whether it will fix the problem, just something to *try* -- almost as if he hadn't heard of this problem before! Really, after 9 months of people reporting this issue, this is where we are? Apple needs to do a better job on training their support or providing them enough information to actually help people if real software problems exist. Jumping thru hoops hoping for a positive outcome isn't helpful. It's a very onerous, time-consuming process that I'm unwilling to do unless they *know* it will actually fix the issue.

Since about October time last year (2020) which I think is when I updated to iOS 14 I’ve been receiving occasional notification sounds without any message /notification being received. I have checked apps are not set to sounds only. I have an iPhone 11 and the sound I have heard is the default text tone which isn’t my text tone -however, it is my what’s app tone but again no message there either. I’ve also heard the fb messenger tone a couple of times but no message has been received. Has anyone else experienced this? Is this down to an iOS14 bug?

Noticed that text message notifications stopped working when we upgraded our software from iOS 13.5.x to iOS 14.2. Tried 14.4.x, and today updated to 14.5.1. Still no notifications with text messages. Receive notifications from other APPs, just not the Apple Message App. This was happening on both the iPhone 11 now running iOS 14.5.1, and iPhone SE running iOS 14.4.2.

Upon closer inspection, I noticed a particular conversation on the Message list on the iPhone 11 was muted (a little night-time icon by the contact name) for whatever reason. Verified that Do Not Disturb was indeed turned off. Once I swiped-left and unmuted that conversation, started receiving notifications again on ALL conversations/contacts.

On the iPhone SE, no conversation in the message list appeared to be muted. So I picked one, swiped-left, and toggled it from Mute->Unmute. Now notifications started working again across all my contacts/conversations.

This is a software bug in iOS. Pure and simple. And this issue has been going on for 9 months now!   Other App notifications on iPhone work. Only Apple's Messaging app doesn't. Over 300,000 reported incidents on the Apple Support Communities Forums. Calls to Support, they act like they've never heard of this issue. Reported this issue to Apple on their feedback form. I'm sure they've heard it before. And I hope it's fixed soon. Until then, try my workaround-hack. Hopefully it will work for you too...

A guy named Richard called me from Apple support Wednesday morning. He screen shared my phone, we went through a lot of settings, he had me download 14.5.1, then called back after it finished. He had me turn off iMessage on my iPad that sits in my Square stand for my business. That was the only thing I hadn’t tried but I didn’t mind since I don’t use the iPad for texting. I thought it was fixed until this morning. I texted my Mom, locked the phone, she texted back, no sound. 😑 He’s calling me back tomorrow so get a progress report. Bad news, Richard, it ain’t fixed.

I recently purchased the iPhone 12 and within a week it happened to me. No sound on iMessages. What I saw was all my text messages suddenly had the grayed out crescent type moon icon on the left of each message. Somehow Apple turned on DND on my messages. I didn't. If you see the icon, tap and hold, a window will pop up. If one of the selections has "Show Alert" tap it. That fixed it for me but I had to do each text message that way.

When I first saw this, I also swiped left and saw the bell symbol muted. I tapped and unmuted it but it had no affect. That is when I tapped and held down the moon icon and saw the selection for "Show Alert". When I tapped that it fixed for that contact. I also doubled checked when I clicked on a message, tapped the contact pic at the top, tapped the "I" icon and checked there. Glad it worked for you, maybe Apple should take a look at that.

In response to allensinmarietta: Yes, definitely reject the advice to "reset all settings, re-enter all settings, and then reload all apps." It's Apple's default recommendation when they have no idea what to do to fix a problem. Total BS. And, as you say, very onerous and time-consuming, which Apple seems not to care about. Grrrrrrrrrrr.

Meanwhile, the fix I used is holding. I'll repost it here:

1) Go to Settings.

2) Go to Sounds & Haptics

3) Toggle "Change with Buttons" to OFF.

4) Exit Sounds & Haptics, exit Settings.

I hear you. The poor support guys have nothing else to offer to software bugs. Apple really needs to put attention on fixing this instead of working on more silly emoji's. This notification issue is impacting 100's of thousands of their customers who has already complained for months. I've wasted several days of time over past 6 months screwing around with it over a few iOS upgrades. And yet, continued to be told to upgrade to the latest iOS -- nothing, except more emoji's and other "features" I'm not using....

... and don't get me started on the mysterious battery-drain issue I started having a while back and continue to have with no fix, a clean battery bill-of-health from Apple Support department, and only recommendation --- continue to upgrade, iOS's when they come out, reset/reload all Apps, blah, blah, blah.

My wife and I still have a Series-1 Watch we need to upgrade. But holding because I'm not sure I'm we're sticking with the Apple eco-system at this point because of issues like these. Break something that we rely upon that used to work and drag their feet on fixes.
