Why is 1TB of storage being used for health app?

Why does it say that my health app is taking up 1TB of storage? Is this a bug for iOS 14?

Hi all,

I have the exact same problem. I've spent 1 hour and 10 minutes on the phone with 3 different Apple support people today - the last person I spoke to was from the Health team (apparently) and even he was stumped at first. For context, my phone is an iPhone 11 Pro 256GB, of which, I've used 71.7GB of data, however, my Health app is 1.61TB. The bar is completely coloured in red like the OP. Following investigation, the Apple representative told me that the engineers are aware of this and I should keep a look out for an update. I asked what I should do in the meantime in regards to backing up my iPhone (as neither the Cloud or my Mac are capable, as they both think I have too much data) and his response was that there was nothing else he could do. I get that this isn't his fault, and I know he doesn't have a magic wand, but this is frustrating to the extreme. What's even worse is there are posts about this back in Mar-20 if you Google it, so either this is an ongoing issue (meaning resolution will not be quick) or it's an issue that has been resolved in the past but has cropped up again (perhaps due to IOS 14). I'm hoping for the latter, as in theory the engineers will know how to fix this if they've done it before.

I don't know for definite, but I'd assume the more people that phone up, then the higher priority this will receive, as such, any one who hasn't called yet might consider phoning up Apple and logging this. If you do, be careful of the 1st line team, as the lady I spoke to was just trying to sell me additional storage space on the Cloud... I had to insist that I had over 600GB of my 1TB drive spare on my Mac, and that there was no way my phone could take up this much room!

Hi Lawrence - you're a legend. I turned off the encryption and the back-up worked - obviously this is only a temporary fix as I want my health data backed up as well, but at least everything else if protected - thank you.

Hi Shawy - thank's for the update. In regards to your earlier point about not being able to update as it was greyed out. I get this on finder sometimes too, try clicking on something else in finder and then clicking back to your iPhone - that always wakes it for me.

As a side note, and I won't dwell on it as it's unrelated to this article, but I'm also having an issue getting my Keychain to sync between devices. I've tried turning it off on all my connected devices, restarting and then turning it back on, but no dice! I wonder if this is also an IOS14 bug, or if I'm just really unlucky!

I have this issue too, mine is showing PB. Same red bar. Haven't tried to download apps. 14.0.1 fixed my issues with fitness , watch app, health not opening however the storage thing is a new problem.. I hope they will release yet another update to fix it soon because ios 14.0.1 did not do the trick it seems.

I have the very same problem mentioned here, and I asked my own question about it (Apple Health taking up 8,36 PB of storage). My problem is, Apple Watch stopped syncing completely, and Whatsapp also refuses to open. I won't restore my phone, because there are important data on it. I cannot backup to ICloud or to my Computer, because neither has 8 PB of storage. Apple is probably aware, but please release the fixing update as fast as possible.

I went for my first run yesterday since I received my new Watch, and just like you've said, it didn't record my workout. The watch knows I did it, as my Move/Exercise ring were closed, but when I went into the activity app on my phone, it said my last exercise was over a week ago... don't judge me, I've been busy :)

This is just another level of frustration as I'm faced with either losing all of my workout data if I factory reset, or I'm losing current workouts due to this issue! I hope a fix comes soon. :(

That’s exactly my frustration, sometimes it appears in the activity app and sometimes it doesn’t. It’s so hit and miss and makes having an Apple Watch pointless, don’t get me wrong I love it, but a big part of why I have it is for the fitness. The restring energy usage has also halved on the health app since iOS 14.

I hope that they get it sorted ASAP

Hopefully I'm wrong - I did read an article that said IOS 14.0.1 was pre-loaded and so wouldn't be released until the iPhone 12, however, a day later the update was released, so it obviously wasn't true. That being said, there's no guarantee that 14.0.2 will even fix the issue... I'm going to give it to the end of the week and then call them again. At the very least, it will log another ticket and add to the total number!

I bet 14.0.2 will be released by the end of this week, just like how 14.0.1 was released a week after the official release of 14.0... @Shaft80 you are right that they are reserving to pre-load the IPhone 12's with a different one but I believe that is 14.1 not 14.0.1. I think 14.0.2 will follow sooner only because I've seen so many other people with issues with 14.0.1 that were not resolved.
